Frogblox is a superb win ways slot from ELK Studios played on an 8×8 grid with 46,656 win ways. During the game, frogs land on the grid and pull down feature symbols from a Feature Shelf above with their tongues, unlocking multipliers, wilds, big symbols and pay both ways features as they do. Combined with Avalanche Wins this can create some really good cumulative win sequences. There is also a Free Drops round with 6 free plays where all features are persistent. Spins start at 20p and the max win is 25,000x.

With It’s Blockers And Avalanches, Frogblox Is Like the Gold Series From ELK

Frogblox is another stunning-looking game from ELK Studios. It is set in lush tropical jungle with waterfalls and thick vegetation in the background. The grid itself is made out of granite stone blocks, with a giant carving of a frog on each site, like some kind of enormous monument to amphibians. It might remind you a little of the Gold series of games in style, as pay symbols sit next to blockers on the grid. The free drops round takes us into a huge indoor set up with marble floors and big staircases. Why it’s there is anyone’s guess but the audio visuals are top class throughout.

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. Frogblox runs at the standard ELK Studios RTP of 94%. That is lower than the accepted RTP for online slots (c. 96%) but it is fixed, so you won’t find the game running at lower RTPs anywhere else. This is important because many studios now produce games at 3 or sometimes even 4 RTP settings, and some UK slot sites run them at 90% or less. So, at least you know what you are getting here.

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

Symbols and Paytable

The game plays out on a 6×6 grid. It is a win ways slot which means your wins are triggered when 3 or more identical symbols land on adjacent reels from left to right, starting at the left most reel. This is regardless of the row they land on. That gives you 46,656 win ways per spin (6x6x6x6x6x6).

The pay table is has just 7 symbols in it. The 4 low payers are the Jack, Queen, King and Ace. These are valued at from 0.05x for 3 Jacks up to 0.4x for 6 Aces. The premiums are the butterfly, beetle and red ruby, valued at from 0.2x for 3 butterflies up to 5x for 6 Red Rubys.

There are also Wilds which substitute in for pay symbols to complete win ways. However, they do NOT have a pay value of their own.

If you’re unimpressed with that paytable, don’t worry. There are plenty of feature symbols and multipliers to enhance your wins.

Features and Gameplay

Avalanche Wins

This is a classic Avalanche Wins game. After each winning spin, winning symbols explode off the grid and new ones drop in to replace them. If more wins are created, the process repeats. And so on, until no more wins are created.

Importantly, blockers that are adjacent to winning symbols also explode off the reels, clearing space for even more symbols to land.

Frogs and The Feature Shelf

The gameplay is enhanced by the special frog symbols that appear in blue. When they land they flick their tongue out to collect features from the bottom row of the two row Feature Shelf that runs along the top of the grid. OR, if no feature is available, then the frog will remove a blocker from the Feature Shelf instead.

These are the features available from the Features Shelf.

Global Multipliers – these are simple multipliers that can be collected to be applied to the overall win from the current sequence of avalanches

Feature Shelf – extra picks are awarded from the Feature Shelf. These are equivalent to the number displayed on the special symbol

Big Symbol – big symbols drop onto the grid, crushing the frog beneath before transforming into big wilds or pay symbols

Both Ways – allow for wins from right to left as well as left to right

Symbol Multiplier – a multiplier value is applied to all wilds and pay symbols in the same column as the frog. If more than one is active then they are added together

Bomb – when activated, ALL blockers are removed from the Feature Shelf to make more features available to collect 

As well as collecting features, frogs can also pull down other frogs from spaces in the column above them. If this happens, then the higher frog first collects ALL features symbols from the shelf, creating chances for big wins.

Frogs Turn Wild

Sometimes, when a frog pulls a feature down then they also explode, turning themselves into a wild in the process.

Lily Pads

If there is a lily pad on the grid then a frog may jump onto it. In doing so it becomes active again, ready to pull down features from the shelf. The position the frog vacated becomes either a wild, a pay symbol, another frog or a lily pad.

Free Drops

To trigger the free drops bonus round you’ll need to clear the entire grid. That gets you 6 free drops. Any existing extra drops from the Feature Shelf and any Global Multiplier are brought into the Free Drops round.

Features from the shelf are persistent throughout the round and it is possible to re-trigger the 6 drops by clearing the grid again.

The Final Verdict

ELK Studios are on an absolute roll at the moment. They’ve totally reinvented how a slot game can work with Rogue Rats of Nitropoils whilst with Frogblox they deliver a classic ELK game, bringing in elements of popular slots like Tropicool and Avalon Gold, but also with a new theme that is fresh and lots of fun. There is no question that building big winning sequences will be possible here, and with a 25,000x max win to aim for, this game is configured nicely for high variance fans. A total hit!
