What Our Reviewer Says ...

"This simple but eccentric slot is classic Peter and Sons. It's charming, but also volatile - an exciting mix for any slots enthusiast!"

Theme & Design

Our Score 9

A Fairtytale-Style Creation Set In A Distant Land

Every good slot studio has a defining style. Peter and Son’s uniqueness comes from their illustrative cartoon creations, often inhabited by kooky animals, or creatures of fairytales and myths like the giants and gnomes of this particular adventure. If you like that vibe, with misty mountains, castle spires, and winding paths leading who knows where in the background, then this you’ll enjoy this quality production. There is an eccentric looking wizard and a bleating goat for company too. But the heroes of the tale are the big and small ones that peer out from the reels. What they are doing here is anyone’s guess, but it’s all good fun. The optimistic Disney movie-style soundtrack completes the picture. In short, top marks to the creative team!

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Gnomes and Giants runs at a very healthy 96.19% RTP. The game does have a medium-high volatility though so that RTP will not be evenly distributed across the wins. Some sessions may bring up some crazy big wins, whilst others will just be a grind with little or no return. That is the way of high variance slots.

Maximum Win

Our Score 8

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The top payout from a spin on Gnomes and Giants is 10,000x. That is a standard for Peter and Sons games, most of which top out at 5,000x to 10,000x. Occasionally they produce a game like Dungeon Tower (20,000x) or The Legend of Musashi (20,000x) that comes in higher, but that is the exception, not the rule. At the 10p minimum bet a 10,000x max win would be £1,000.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

This is a 6 reel, 6 row game with 50 paylines to win across. You’ll need to land 3 or more identical symbols across a line from left to right, starting at the left most reel, to score a win.

Gnomes and Giants Paytable
Paytable with 5x for 6 top premiums

The low payers are the card suits, clubs, spades, hearts and diamonds. These are valued at from 0.1x for 3 diamonds up to 0.8x for 6 hearts. The premiums are the gnomes and giants faces in blue, green, yellow and red. These are valued at from 0.2x for 3 of a blue face up to 5x for 6 of the red face.

There is also a yellow Wild symbol that can substitute for any of the 8 pay symbols to complete a payline, as well as paying out 10x when 6 drop onto a line. Wilds will appear on any reel.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 8

Aside from the standard spins and wins, Gnomes and Giants is all about the super-sized blocks of symbols and the free spins rounds. There are 3 types of symbols blocks:

  • Monster Blocks of 2×2, 3×3, 4×4, 5×5 and 6×6 can drop at random on any spin.
  • The Synched Blocks feature will occur at random to turn all symbols within visible blocks on the reels into the same symbol from the paytable.
  • And another random feature is the Expanding Blocks one in which monster blocks expand sideways OR upwards OR downwards. If this causes them to overlap with another Monster Block then the overlapping parts turn into wild symbols.

Free Spins With Progressive Multipliers

There is a green gem Scatter symbol which will unlock the free spins feature when 5 or more land on one spin. The more scatters land, the more free spins you get. So 5 gets you 5 spins, 6 gets you 6, and so on.

And Peter and Sons have built a nice progressive element into the gameplay here too so that unlocking further tiers increases a win multiplier. The multiplier starts at 2x, then increases to 3x when 3 scatters are collected, then 5x when 9 scatters are collected, then 10x when 18 scatters are collected.

Golden Bet Enhanced Odds

Finally, if you want to increase your chances of landing Monster Blocks and triggering the free spins round then you can increase your stake by 150% (£1 becomes £1.50) with the Golden Bet.

The Final Verdict

Fans of Peter and Sons should enjoy this fun slot. It is typical of their unique design style and offers a really enticing mix of mega symbols and free spins with high volatility and a good max win too. Whilst not on a par with their best material, it nevertheless packs a punch and stands out from the crowd which is what we love P and S for.

Useful Tips When Playing Gnomes and Giants

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Look Out For Gem Scatters

As well as Monster Blocks, those green gemstone scatters are key to success here. 5 unlock the free spins round but each extra one gets you another spin, so look to land as many as you can on one spin. And remember, landing more during the feature increases your multiplier!

2. Pick A Low Stake

Exercise good Bankroll Management in the game by choosing a low stake – 20p is the minimum. This will stretch your funds further in a game that has a volatile engine and can burn your funds fast!

3. Look For Wilds

In the base game, wild symbols can help you complete one of those 50 paylines. So look out for the yellow wilds landing or forming when 2 Monster Blocks overlap in the Expanding Blocks feature.

4. Play At Our Recommended Slot Sites
