Beat the Beast Dragon’s Wrath
By Thunderkick
Dragon's Wrath is the 6th in Thunderkick’s Beat the Beast series of slots which launched back in 2020, showcasing classic monsters from legend in simple 5 reel, 9 payline game formats, always with formidable volatility. The gameplay here is straight forward. Dragon Emblems trigger a free spins round in which they turn into Roaming Multiplier Wilds. Each win including a Roaming Wild extends the round and grows their multipliers. You can win up to 11,111x and spins start at 10p.

Review Scorecard
What Our Reviewer Says …
A well-designed Thunderkick slot which looks top quality but the gameplay lacks the bite of a really good high variance game.
What We Like
- Stylish but simple design makes the game stand out
- Roaming Wilds can grow multipliers up to 150x in free spins
- Simple gameplay is really easy to follow
- Each win with a wild in free spins adds another free spin
What We Didn't Like
- Gameplay may become boring quite quickly
- Some slot sites run the game at low RTP
Theme and Design
Dragon’s Wrath exhibits all the hallmarks of the classic Thunderkick artistic style. It’s clear and easy on the eye without being too detailed, with large, unfussy symbols. The theme is a kind of dungeons and dragons fantasy one, with a deep valley with green trees and picturesque medieval houses providing the backdrop, whilst on the reels its all slate-grey tiles housing rings, dragon heads and knight’s swords and helmets.
The game really comes to life in the free spins round night falls, and ethereal golden light surrounds the reel set. There is certainly continuity from the other Beat the Beast games and fans of the series, and Thunderkick slots, will be very at home here.
RTP and Variance
Thunderkick have given this game three RTP settings for your casino operator to choose from. They are 96.44%, 94% and 92%. The optimum setting is very good – a little above average for an online slot. However, you want to avoid playing at 94% or 92% if possible. I recommend MrQ from Lindar Media for the best RTP in all slots. In my experience they run every game at the highest available rate.
If you are playing elsewhere then check the RTP before you spin for real to make sure you are getting value for money. You can do this by hitting the ‘I’ button on the left of the game screen then scrolling though until you see the ‘theoretical return to player’.
Like all other Beat the Beast games, Dragon’s Wrath is a high variance slot so it will deliver a mix of long dry spells and short periods of high wins. It’s high risk for high reward, and if you prefer getting smaller, more regular payouts, you won’t like this slot!
Maximum Win
The top win is 11,111x. That ain’t bad. But whilst Thunderkick aren’t really known for their particularly high max win slots, they have tempted us with better potential more recently in games like Beat the Beast: Griffin’s Gold (22,222x), Bones and Bounty (25,000x) and Swords of Shogun (25,200x).
Also check out our list of slots with the highest max wins for games with potential payouts upwards of 100,000x!
Symbols and Paytable
The format here is a simple one, as with all Beat the Beast games. There are 5 reels, 3 rows and 9 fixed paylines. Wins are triggered by landing 3 or more identical symbols across any payline from left to right, starting at the left-most reel.
The paytable has good value in it which is always a good starting point in my opinion, and with just 9 paylines, it becomes a necessity! The low value symbols are the cards, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. These are valued at up to 5x for 5 on a line. The premium symbols are the icons of battle and fantasy – the sword, helmet, ring, dragon and dragon’s head. These pay up to 50x for 5 on a line.
There is also a Dragon Emblem symbol that is both the wild and the scatter. As the wild it substitutes for all pay symbols to complete paylines. They also come with multipliers as we are about to find out.
Features and Gameplay
This is not a complex slot. It suits those who like to chase down the big wins without too much distraction. Here is how it works:
More About Dragon Emblems
Every Dragon Emblem has a 2x multiplier which activates it it forms part of a payline as a wild. If more than one is involved in the line then they are added together before being applied to the win.
Free Spins With Roaming Wilds and Progressive Multipliers
The main event is the Free Spins round. You’ll need to land 3 Dragon Emblems on one spin to trigger this and earn yourself 3 free spins.
Your Dragon Emblems now remain on the reels and become Roaming Wilds, moving with each new spin but still substituting for pay symbols as before when they can complete a winline.
These Roaming Wilds have a starting multiplier of 2x. When they are used in a win, not only do they add one extra free spin to your total, but they also randomly add their multiplier value to that of another of the Roaming Wilds, up to a maximum value of 50x.
And, if more than one Roaming Wild is part of a winline, then their multiplier values are added together before being applied to the win. In theory that means you could have a 150x multiplier in play by the end of the round.
Final Verdict
After a long hiatus, the Beat the Beast series returns, but without too much of a bang. Thunderkick have not deviated from the principles behind the previous five titles, so the gameplay remains simple and accessible whilst the production is clinical and high quality.
That is fine but it might leave some players feeling a bit disappointed. The game engine is as tough as ever too, so casual slots players should steer clear. But if you enjoyed the roaming symbols in Griffin’s Gold gameplay then you will certainly like this one and if you like the maths model of slots like Jin Chan’s Pond of Riches then you will enjoy Dragon’s Wrath too.

Results from 200 spins on Beat The Beast: Dragon’s Wrath for real money at Swift Casino.
- Stake Size: £0.2
- Start balance: £40
- End balance: £16.60
- Hit Rate: 25.5% (51 winning spins in 200)
- Biggest Win: 13x
- Bonus Round: 0
I gave it 200 spins to try and crack the free spins round on Dragon’s Wrath but no luck there. Even so, it’s a slick game with great production and a surprisingly good win rate for a high variance slot. I saw 25.5% of spins produce a win of one kind of another. That’s partly because only 2 premium symbols are needed to trigger a payout. There were plenty of wild multipliers in play too which kept things interesting. But the real thrills would come in the bonus feature and we didn’t get to see that this time.
Take aways? A nice slot for those who like to keep things simple and have the patience to wait for that free spins feature to come around.
