What Our Reviewer Says …
Smart production and the chance to play for the WowPot makes up for the lack of originality in the gameplay
What We Like
- Fun, Ancient Egyptian design
- Huge progressive jackpots to play for
- Play from just 10p
- Classic 'Book of' format with very simple gameplay
- 5,000x non-progressive jackpot
What We Didn't Like
- Low RTP due to jackpot contributions
- Very similar to all other 'Book of' slots
Theme and Design
Book of Atem Wowpot! is a jackpot version of the original Book of Atem. The design is just like the original, but it is at least bright and upbeat.
As for the narrative, just when we thought the Egyptian theme had been done to death, All41 Studios pulls an alternative deity out of the ancient sack! This one is Atem, finisher of the world, and he provides the inspiration for this slot.
The reel set sits against a scenic pool, inside some sort of palace courtyard. The green waters are flanked with palm trees and it feels like the kind of place you’d like to sit and soak, despite its owner’s somewhat dark predilections. And while you can’t necessarily dish out points for originality of the gameplay, you definitely can for their handling of the theme!
RTP and Variance
The original Atem game had a great RTP of 96.45%, while playing for the Wowpot Jackpot has brought it down to a semi-respectable 93.5%. This is right in the middle range for other online slots on the Wowpot Jackpot network. Not super generous, but not too stingy either. It’s also set alongside high volatility, so the win distribution is likely to be uneven, so beware becasuse it can burn your balance down fast.
Maximum Win
Book of Atem Wowpot! Has a 5,000x non-progressive max win. This is exactly the same as its predecessor, but in this iteration you also get a chance to shoot at a progressive jackpot. There are four different levels of jackpot, but the largest seeds at €2,000,000, so it’s worth playing for!
TIP: If you’d rather shoot for the non-progressive max win then play the original game. You benefit from a much better RTP.
Symbols and Paytable
The game is played on 5 reel and 3 rows with 10 fixed paylines. It features 9 pay symbols and one bonus symbol.
The lower-paying symbols are card royals adorned with theme-related flourishes. These five symbols require at least 3 of a kind to form a winning combination and pay from 12.5 to 25x the bet for this. The premium symbols include a pink lotus, a cobra, a lanner falcon, and a Pharaoh symbol. Unlike the low-paying symbols, these only need 2 of a kind to create a win. The Pharaoh is the highest-paying symbol, offering 500x the stake for a 5-of-a-kind combination.
Features and Gameplay
You can’t give out too many points for originality, as this game plays just like most other 'Book of ...' games including the orignal Book of Ra. Let’s take a look at how each of these mechanics works.
Book Symbol
This symbol acts as both a scatter and a wild and it can land anywhere on the reels. If you land 3 or more of them then you trigger 10 free spins. If it lands as a wild then it can substitute for any normal pay symbol.
Free Spins Round
If you land 3, 4, or 5 book symbols then the free spins round begins. Right at the beginning the book symbol opens and one of the regular pay symbols is chosen. This symbol will expand to fill a whole reel if 2 or more of them land at once. These expanded symbols don’t need to be adjacent to form wins, they simply add up any matching symbols on the grid.
If you land 3 or more further book symbols during the free spins round then the spins round is retriggered.
Wow Progressive Jackpot
Landing even one book symbol is enough to trigger the progressive jackpot. Sometimes it will go with one, sometimes three, sometimes not at all. It does feel completely random, but it’s brilliant when it does. A bonus wheel will appear with 20 sections, each representing one of the jackpots (shown below). You spin the wheel and you are guaranteed to win one of the jackpots. Unfortunately, only one of those 20 sections is the Wowpot! So your chances are still pretty slim.
With that said, your chance of triggering this bonus round is greater the higher your stake. So those on a bumper budget stand the best chance of landing that Wowpot! Jackpot.
The seed values for what you could win are shown below:
- Mini starts at €10.
- Minor starts at €100.
- Major starts at €50,000.
- Wowpot! starts at €2,000,000
Final Verdict
Will Book of Atem Wowpot win any awards for being totally unique? No. But, does it stand up as a fun slot game with fairly favourable stats? For us, yes. The gameplay here is such a copycat of Book of Ra that it isn’t even funny, but the visual feel of it is at least different. Whoever designed it is definitely due a spa break somewhere similar to the illustration. But of course the main reason to play is to chase down that huge jackpot which elevates Atem to a different level.
Testing Notes
Test spins and results analysis by Mark Wadie.
Results from 250 spins on Book of Atem WowPot at Casumo.
- Stake Size: 50p
- Start balance: £1001.15
- End balance: £976.9
- Hit Rate: 26.4% (66 winning spins in 250)
- Biggest Win: 75.5x
- Bonus Round: 1
Book of Atem ticked along nicely with a 26.4% win rate over 250 spins which isn’t bad for a high variance game. It meant the wins were relatively regular, if small in size.
By avoiding setting the game in the inner sanctum of the pyramid or tomb, All41 have at least made this game look a little different to standard Book of slots like Book of Dead, even if the gameplay is totally generic. It’s all about the bonus round of course, and that progressive jackpot. Needless to say I didn’t win the latter, but I did trigger the free spins after 143 spins. But it produced just a 24.5x win, with the expander only triggering on one of 10 spins. These games can be frustrating like that … waiting a long time for the bonus to drop, only to be given a relative dud when it does. Never mind because I picked up a 75.5x win in the base game which just shows you can scoop the odd good payout there as well.
Take aways? Originality isn’t a Book of Atem’s strong point, but nevertheless the production is nice and for Book of fans it represented yet another chance to hit pay dirt with those expanding symbols.
