Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played Donut Division

IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.

Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers

I played 250 spins on Donut Division on Hacksaw Gaming’s test servers prior to release to test the game. This is what happened.

  • Stake Size: 1
  • Start balance: 5,000
  • End balance: 4,888.30
  • Win Rate: 24.8% (62 winning spins in 250)
  • Biggest Win: 35x
  • Free Spins Rounds: 1

I said elsewhere in this review that even mid-variance slots from Hacksaw can feel volatile at times, and this one certainly did. It produced one or two streaks of 10 or 12 spins with no payout at all before runs of 4 or 5 consecutive win. And the balance burned down from 5,000 to 4,888.30 in just 250 spins. In the final analysis the win rate did come in at a reasonable 24.8% which is roughly 1 in 4 spins.

The gameplay is fun though and the Gooey Wilds are regular in the base game. I scored one 18.2x win from these thanks to 2 rows of wilds and a 6x multiplier.

An 18.2 win from Gooey Wilds

The bonus dropped just once in 250 spins. Another sign that this slot is more volatile than you might think. I chose the Warehouse round as it looks the more interesting. It’s a fun alternative to the usual Hold and Wins and Free Spins. I finished with a 35x win thanks to a bunch of adding multipliers. You can see how the payout could massively go up if you hit a big multiplying multiplier.

The Warehouse Feature in Donut Division

Overall, this felt like one of Hacksaw’s better games of 2024 with an innovative bonus but just a bit tighter than you might expect so beware.

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"A really entertaining slot with a fun theme and very inventive bonus round."

Overall Score: 8.0

Theme & Design

Our Score 9

Donut Division has a strong 70s US cop show feel about it. The 4 detectives, including Burt and Harry (aka Chief) are crook catchers with a taste for gooey donuts. The cartoon action takes place in a dodgy backstreet and our 4 pot-bellied, aviator glasses-wearing, handlebar moustachioed heroes are hanging out by their car. The game looks great, comes complete with twangy guitar soundtrack and showcases Hacksaw’s creative talents nicely. Top stuff!

RTP and Variance

Our Score 7

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Donut Division has 4 available RTP setting for operators to choose from. They are 96.3%, 94.29%, 92.26% and 88.24%. It’s important to check the RTP wherever you play because UK slot sites will choose lower rates sometimes which gives you less value for your money. You can check the RTP where you play by hitting the hamburger button under the reels and scrolling through until you see Return to Player. My advice would be, if it’s less than 94%, play elsewhere.

NOTE: In our research we have found that MrQ from Lindar Media consistently runs Hacksaw slots at the optimum rates, making it a good choice for this game.

This is a medium variance slot so the win distribution should be relatively even during your session. However, even mid volatility Hacksaw slots can still be a tough play, so be careful and your stake to a sensible level to avoid burn out.

Maximum Win

Our Score 8

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The max payout in Donut Division is 12,500x. That is good for a medium variance game, and typical of Hacksaw slots. If you want to play for higher wins then we recommend our article on slots with the highest max wins.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 7

Donut Division is a 6-reel slot with 5 rows per reel and 19 paylines. Wins are triggered by landing 3 or more identical symbols on a line from left to right, starting at the left most reel.

There are 9 symbols in the pay table. Low value ones are the coffee cup, cone, police light, walkie talkie and donut, valued at from 0.1x for 3 on a line up to 1x for 6 on a line. The premium symbols are the 4 characters, valued at from 0.2x for 3 on a line up to 5x for 6 on a line.

Donut Division Paytable
The paytable with 5x for 6 cops on a line

Not great value then. However, as any Hacksaw fan knows, those wins can be super-charged by multipliers at certain times in the game, so don’t be put off.

There is also a Wild, represented by the letter W, that will substitute for all other pay symbols to complete paylines. They also have a pay value of 5x when 6 land on a line and additional powers that are explained in the next section.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

Donut Division is stacked with features including FOUR bonus rounds and special Gooey Wilds. Here is how it all works.

Gooey Guns and Gooey Wilds With Multipliers

Hacksaw have found another ingenious way to add wilds to the reels. This time they use the Gooey Gun symbol that fires out Gooey Wilds to its left across the same row it sits on each time it lands.

Now, Gooey Guns may have multipliers of between 1x and 100x. If they do, the Gooey Wilds they fire out will take on those values. And before any paylines are highlighted, the value of ALL the multipliers on a row of Gooey Wilds is added together and that total becomes the wild multiplier value for each Gooey Wild.

When a Gooey Wild is part of a win, its multiplier value is applied to the win value before the payout is made. And if more than one Gooey Wild is part of a win, the multiplier values are added together before being applied to the win value.

FOUR Free Spins Rounds To Play

One of the highlights of Donut Division are the free spins features. These are triggered by landing 3 or 4 FS scatters on any spin. The interesting part about this particular bonus is you get to choose between 2 configurations at each level.

Choosing your bonus in Donut Division

Three FS Scatters – Choose Between Warehouse and Stakeout Free Spins

So, if you land 3 FS scatters you will be given a choice between these 2 configurations.

Warehouse Bonus With Flaslights and 100x Multipliers

In the warehouse game, your objective is to build up the multiplier value displayed at the top of the grid. You do this by revealing special symbols on the grid – Adding Multipliers (1x to 100x) or Multiplying Multipliers (2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x) during the round.

How these symbols are revealed is very clever. So, the round starts with 3 lives. Each spin reduces your lives by 1, but if a special symbol is revealed on that spin, then the counter goes back up to 3.

Special symbols do not drop onto the grid in the normal way you expect in a bonus round. Instead, they are ‘revealed’ by 2 flashlights that shine on random positions with each spin. One flashlight covers reels 1 to 3, the other reels 4 to 6. Where a special symbol is revealed, it is activated and the light moves to a new position without consuming any lives.

Now, as well as revealing those adding and multiplying multipliers, the flashlight can also reveal other special symbols as follows:

Batteries that appear on reels 2 and 5 and rows 2, 3 and 4 will cause the flashlight’s beam area to expand to a 3×3 space, giving you more chances to activated special symbols.

Light Switches are VERY powerful as they cause the entire grid to be illuminated, and all special symbols to be activated. Don’t expect to see those too often.

Dead Symbols are to be avoided. If you hit one of these, it consumes a flashlight charge. Each light has TWO charges, and consuming both causes a spin to be used up.

Once all lives are used up, the total multiplier at the top of the grid is applied to your bet value and the final payout is made.

Stakeout With Better Odds of Hitting Wilds

The Stakeout feature can also be chosen if you land 3 FS symbols. This is the same as the base game, but with better odds of landing Gooey Guns and better odds of landing higher multiplier values.

During Stakeout, if you land 2 more FS symbols you’ll get 2 more spins, and if you land 3 more FS symbols you’ll get 4 more spins.

Four FS Scatters – Choose Between Super Warehouse and Super Stakeout Free Spins

Landing 4 scatters gives you the choice of enhanced versions of either of the bonus rounds.

Super Warehouse

This is the same as the Warehouse round but with a minimum of 5x on the Adding Multipliers.

Super Stakeout

In this version, once a Gooey Gun has dropped onto a row on a spin, on EVERY subsequent spin another Gooey Gun is GUARANTEED to land somewhere on that row. This gives you the opportunity to build big, big multipliers across the grid.

And once again, landing 2 or 3 more FS symbols will get you 3 or 4 more spins.

The Final Verdict

Donut Division is a fun and fast-paced slot and a welcome light relief after some of their darker releases in 2024. The Gooey Wilds are frequent enough in the base game to keep things interesting but it’s really all about hitting that bonus round. If you make it that far then the Warehouse game is a really inventive feature with bags of jeopardy potential and worth waiting for too. And ultimately, this is a game both die hard Hacksaw fans and those new to the studio will enjoy.

Useful Tips When Playing Donut Division

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Look For Gooey Guns

These are powerful symbols in base game and Stakeout round as they can add multiple multiplier wilds to the reels in one go.

2. Choose Your Bonus Round Carefully

Read our review before deciding which bonus round you are suited to. The Warehouse is more fun in my opinion, but make your own mind up!

3. Look For FS Symbols

You need at least THREE to unlock those bonus rounds where bigger wins can happen.

4. Play At Our Recommended Slot Sites
