Theme and Design
A Trip Back To The 80s In This Exciting Arcade-Style Slot
In the same month that BTG’s Trigger Happy takes us back to arcade halls of decades ago, so too does Relax Gaming for their 5-line 8 bit space-invaders style slot, Line Busters. If arcade machines in dark rooms with sticky floors, and lots of bleeps and flashing lights are your thing, then you’ll love this. It’s a super recreation of that world with excellent affects when you complete win lines.
During your spins little invaders ships scoot up and down the left of the reels, firing bullets across paylines, with awesome sound affects too. Meanwhile, on the machines in the background a nod to other Relax slots with Hellcatraz, Neko Nights and Santa’s Stack all visible. A nice touch.
RTP and Variance
Line Busters Dream Drop RTP rate changes depending on whether you play the jackpot version or the basic version. The basic one comes in at 96.1% whilst the Dream Drop one sits at 94%. That is because 12% of each bet contributes to the jackpot. Both RTP rates are good for games of this type so no complaints here.
And like all other Dream Drop games, this is a high variance slot with a high risk-high reward maths model. It can tease and torment for long periods before kicking out that big win you’ve been waiting for. It requires patience and good bankroll management too!
Maximum Win
Outside of the jackpots, the max win in Line Busters is just 5,000x. That is low for any high variance slot, and low for the Dream Drop series too. For better non-jackpot potential in a Dream Drop game you could try Templar Tumble 2 Dream Drop (20,000x) or Neko Night Dream Drop (also 20,000x).
Symbols and Paytable
The reel set here is small – just 3 reels, each displaying 5 rows. And just FIVE paylines in play, each being a horizontal row across all 3 reels.
To score a win you must land 3 identical symbols across on of these lines. There are 6 symbols, with different values assigned to them on each spin. The possible values are as follows:
- Blue Spaceship: 0.2x
- Green Spaceship: 0.4x
- Purple Monster: 0.6x
- Blue Box: 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x or 10x
- Green Box: 15x, 25x, 50x or 75x
- Yellow Box: 100x or 150x
But there is another way of triggering prizes too. Look out for the yellow arrow symbols that land on reels 1 and 2. They MAY carry multipliers of 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 10x. Now, if an arrow lands on both reels 1 and 2 on a payline and a pay symbol lands on reel 3 on that line, then the payout is made, with any multiplier applied to the win as well.
Features and Gameplay
This is a really simple slot game. Aside from the slightly unusual arrow multiplier pay out mechanic the only extra you get here is free spins. Unless you play the Dream Drop version of course which comes with those huge progressives.
Free Spins Round
Look out for the little rockets that land on reel 3 displaying ‘Free Spins’ on the side. When this happens and arrows land on reels 1 and 2 on the same row, then the free spins round is triggered. You may get 3, 4 or 5 spins this way, decided by the number shown with the rocket.
You can also boost the number of spins you get when the arrows land with multipliers. Those multiplier values will be applied to the number with the rocket to give your total spins.
During free spins, full reel height stacks of symbols – i.e. 5 - are in play AND you can re-trigger by landing more free spins rockets and arrows.
Dream Drop Jackpots
If you want a shot at the big time then make sure you play the version with the Dream Drop logo on it.
This is one of the simplest versions of the game I have seen. It works like this:
At the start of a standard spin the game will switch to Dream Drop mode where only ONE row of symbols spins. If you land any symbol on reels 1 and 2 then a prize will be awarded. The value of that prize is determined by the symbol that lands on reel 3 – Rapid, Midi, Maxi, Major or Mega. The seed values for those jackpots are as follows:
- Rapid Jackpot: Starts at £1
- Midi Jackpot: Starts at £5
- Maxi Jackpot: Starts at £100
- Major Jackpot: Starts at £25,000. Payout GUARANTEED by £50,000
- Mega Jackpot: Starts at £500,000. First Payout GUARANTEED by £1,000,000 *.
The maximum prize for the Mega Jackpot increases by £500,000 with each second jackpot win until it reaches a ceiling of £10,000,000.
Final Verdict
Line Busters is a real time travel slot, taking us back to the 80s, and credit goes to the Relax Gaming creative team for the production here which is genuinely superb. The audio and visuals are brilliant and the space invaders animations have been nicely woven into the gameplay. A lot of thought has clearly gone into what is a simple game. And it works, keeping you entertained even though the dry spells.
Just keep in mind, as I said in this review, the game engine definitely feels tight, partly as RTP is held back for the jackpots, but also because the variance is high anyway. But still, go in with your eyes open and you can enjoy another excellent slot from this top tier developer.
Testing Notes
I played 250 spins on Line Busters Dream Drop on Relax Gaming’s test server prior to release to test the game. This is what happened.
- Stake Size: 1
- Start balance: 5,000
- End balance: 4910.40
- Win Rate: 21.2% (53 winning spins in 250)
- Biggest Win: 28x
- Free Spins Round: 1
This is a really fun game. It’s simple, but the space invader sights and sounds are as affecting as they were in the original games. But make no mistake, it is a high variance game. The balance rose up to 5,050 quite quickly thanks to a couple of wins including a 28x, but then proceeded to nosedive as 100 spins went by with barely anything. The win rate was OK at 21.2% but most of those were very small. The free spins round triggered just once over 250 spins which felt tight, then low and behold only kicked out a tiny 3.6x win! Frustrating. And finally, I had FIVE Dream Drop spins – that’s once in 50 spins on average – but no wins.
Overall, I would say if you are a fan of 8 bit arcade you should definitely have a spin on Line Busters. But beware, because it looks like a serious balance burner!
