Theme and Design

Ever wondered how Frankenstein might have worked out if he’d been created in space? No, well no matter, as Peter & Sons have let us know with Mutagenes. This game is set inside an intergalactic laboratory, filled with various jars and potions, most containing parts of aliens. It seems, based on the symbols on the reels, that the scientists are hard at work creating a humanoid out of all of these parts. 

However, don’t let this put you off. This slot definitely errs on the cartoon side of creepy, as most Peter & Sons slots do. If you’re after an out and out horror slot then this won’t be it, but if you’re after a funny take on a mad scientist theme then you’ll enjoy this game.

RTP and Variance

Mutagenes has four different RTP rates: 96.3%, 94%, 90.5%, and 86%. If you’re playing with the default RTP of 96.3% then that’s all well and good, but it’s super important to check, as the other RTPs really don’t offer a great return.

The high volatility is also something that players with a smaller bankroll should look out for, but it’s not uncommon to see high volatility in a slot with a generous top prize.

Maximum Win

Mutagenes has a top payout of 12,000x the bet which is a prize worth shooting for! When playing with the highest RTP, it turns the slot into a pretty generous one. Symbols and Paytable

The game is payed on 6 reels and 4 rows and offers 4,096 ways to win. Wins are achieved via a win ways mechanic, meaning you need to land 3 or more identical symbols on consecutive reels - regardless of the row they land on - starting from the leftmost reel.

There are 10 pay symbols in total. The 4 low value symbols are clubs, diamonds, spades, and hearts. Landing 6 of the same symbol awards 0.5x the bet. The 6 premium symbols are syringes, hands, eyes, brains, skulls, and dismembered heads (delightful). Landing 6 of these symbols pays between 0.8x and 4x the bet.

Features and Gameplay

Mutagenes has all kinds of interesting features that help to make the gameplay out of this world. Here is how it works:

Wilds and Expanding Wilds

The wild symbol - represented by the letter 'W' - substitutes for any normal pay symbol, helping you to complete win ways. Sometimes wilds will expand at random to fill an entire reel. 

Cascades

Every time a win is formed the winning symbols are removed and the cascade feature starts. New symbols drop down into the empty spaces, giving you more chances to win. The cascade feature only stops when no new wins are made.

Progressive Multiplier Counter

The multiplier counter resets to 1x every spin and +1 is added for every cascade. The multiplier is applied to each win. 

Infections

The infection feature is a whole lot better than it sounds. When triggered, a low paying symbol is transformed into a higher paying one. 

Free Spins

If you land 3, 4, or 5 scatters you start the free spins round with 7, 9, or 11 spins respectively. During the round the multiplier (from the multiplier meter) is applied to all wins. It starts at 1x and increases by 1 for each win. It remains persistent throughout the feature. 

Ante Bet

The Ante Bet feature let’s you pay an extra half of your stake per bet (0.5x) for an increased chance of landing expanding wilds and scatters.
