About This Slot

Taking their turn to deliver some grid slot antics, iSoft Bet have produced a game that is notable both for its colorful artwork and its compelling gameplay. Sea or Riches is set against a beautiful backdrop of colorful waters, sandy beaches and rocky outlets, all under the watchful eye of a bearded, pistol-wielding pirate. He sits to the left of the grid, whilst on the right-side of the screen there is a Compass and a Map that seem to suggest we are lost on a desert island somewhere!

Overall the game bears similarities to Bombs from Playtech or Pirates’Plenty from Red Tiger Gaming and fans of those games will feel at home here. In this case though, to score wins you will need a minimum of 5 identical symbols to appear on spaces connected horizontally or vertically in order to receive prizes – otherwise known as a ‘cluster’.

RTP, Variance and Top Payout

Spins, or ‘drops’ as they are known, start at 20p per play on Sea of Riches. The RTP of the game sits very much at a middle of the road 96.00%, whilst the studio rate the variance of the game as medium. So, this slot is probably going to have a pretty broad appeal, or no appeal at all – for the high-risk fanatics it is likely to be too slow moving, whilst for the casual slotters it may be just a little too risky.

The other point to note is that the top payout is just 2,416x the stake. In the modern age of blockbuster slots with payouts that stretch well into the 10,000s that is not a particularly impressive payout to strive for.

Symbols and Graphics

What is impressive here is the graphics and artwork which are in typical iSoft Bet style, very colorful and bright. This goes from the backdrop through to the icons on the reels themselves.

The low-value symbols include coins of different colors with various imprints on them. An Anchor, Bottle, Hook, Cannonball and Skull deliver from 3,75x to 30x the stake when 15 and more are found in a cluster. And in the upper part of the paytable you will find Precious Stones, a Sapphire, Emerald, Pink Diamond and a Ruby awarding between 40x and 150x your wager if at least 15 drop in a cluster.

Look out as well for the Wild which is enveloped with a Kraken’s tentacles and can increase your gains by substituting all other symbols except the Map Pieces in a Bottle to complete win lines.

There are no traditional Scatters in Sea of Riches video slot.

Gameplay and Features

If you like pirate-themed games, you should definitely take a shot at this one, as it is packed with random Wilds, Cascading Reels and a rewarding Free Spins Round that is enhanced by random modifiers, all beautifully woven into the narrative of lost ships, compasses, maps and dangerous black-beards!

Cascading Reels

This is a feature we are all familiar with now and you will find on pretty much all grid slots – whenever a winning cluster is formed, symbols that are part of that win will disappear and make room for new ones to land. If more wins are created, so the process repeats, until no more winning combinations are formed.

Treasure Map Collect

When you play Sea of Riches you will note that Bottles holding pieces of a Treasure Map will drop in regularly. These are important because when you have collected all 25 then you move up to a new level in the game.

And as you would expect, with each new level, more features are added. There are 4 level in total and when you complete the top level, then you return back to the start again.

Now, every level has a ‘Wildseas’ Modifier activated randomly on no-win spins. These modifiers have different affects on the gameplay. They are the Wild Kraken, which comes from the depths to transform from 1 to 10 icons into Wild; the Wild Storm with which between 3 and 9 symbols become Wild; Wild Whale where 5 Wilds are put on the grid at random; and Ghostly Galleon, in which from 2 to 5 Wild Multipliers are added.

Captain’s Compass

As the same time, winning clusters will charge the compass to the right of the grid.

Here, with new levels different Reel Modifiers are triggered. Rolling Rum adds 1, 2 or 3 barrels that change from 3 to 6 vertical icons into the same symbol. The Musket Mayhem chooses from 5 to 12 random symbols to shoot them down from the reels. In the Cannon Blast feature Cannonballs destroy entire rows. And finally, Swarm O’ Parrots covers the reels, making from 10 to 15 symbols vanish instantly!

All these modifiers will in different ways lead to enhanced win opportunities.

Stormin’ Free Spins Feature

Finally we get to the free spins round.

This Bonus begins when the Compass is filled with 48 or more symbols. Then you must spin the Ship’s Wheel to receive from 5 to 15 free plays during which Lightning may strike at random – when it does it bring a multipliers up to apply to any wins.

Our Verdict

Sea of Riches is a surprisingly fun slot given that on the surface it would seem to be a rather generic game – we have seen plenty of pirate slots in the past, and many cluster pays grid slots too. And with a low payout potential, at first we were put off. But in fact this game has hidden surprises thanks to its interesting mix of free spins, modifiers and multipliers. Whilst the pace may be a little slow the action is compelling enough thanks to all those wilds and random extra symbols. So, if you want something jolly and engaging, but without the frustration of a high variance epic, Sea of Riches is worth a punt.
