Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played Slurpy

IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.

ELK have built a reputation for producing slots with really alternative ways to trigger a win and Slurpy is another great example. I played 100 ‘spins’ to test the game. It has a real old skool game boy feel to it, particularly with those retro gamer sounds and the illustrated characters. Its basically cluster pays but with the added element that you need an identical character color to your cluster symbols to trigger the win. The hit rate came in at 24% which isn’t bad. Most wins were small – to be expected – but occasionally I got on a good run with a few consecutive clusters being cleared.

A big win in Slurpy by ELk Studios
39.8x win in Slurpy

The best win (39.8x) came from the coin feature – a line of coins appears and the full value is paid out if there are no other symbols above it. Long and Super Straws also proved useful at points. But I never got into the bonus round which was a shame.

Take aways? A really fun alternative game to try if you are bored of standard cluster pays slots and enough wins to keep you entertained despite the high variance.

What We Liked

  • Fun and unique payout mechanic
  • FIVE feature symbols to look out for
  • Good win rate - 24% - in testing
  • Fun, retro gamer vibe to the production

What We Didn't like

  • Low RTP at 94%
  • Disappointing max win of 5,000x

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"Fans of ELK Studio's 'alternative' slots will love this one!"

Overall Score: 6.8

Theme & Design

Our Score 7

ELK Studios tend to go for quite three dimensional slots with intricate graphics and Slurpy is definitely a departure from that. It has a unique style, quite flat, but pretty in an illustrative way. It’s set inside a Japanese restaurant, maybe taking a sushi conveyor belt as a theme? The ‘slurpers’ are each unique in their style, some appearing as robots, others humanoids, definitely none of them are your average diner.

This slot feels distinctly different to your average ELK Studios slot, but who can say if it’s a departure for better or for worse. The design of this one is likely to fall to personal preference.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 5

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

ELK Studios aren’t well known for their overly generous RTPs and Slurpy doesn’t buck the trend. It has a decidedly unkind RTP of 94%, which is a fair bit below ideal. The high volatility combines with this to make a slot that you wouldn’t exactly describe as budget-friendly.

Maximum Win

Our Score 5

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

Usually, a low RTP and high variance mean you’re in for a treat in terms of a massive max win, but that’s not the case here. Slurpy has a max win of 5,000x, which isn’t bad, but it’s not great either. The pay mechanic is undoubtedly unique, but it would’ve been better to see a bumper prize on offer.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

Slurpy is unusual. It starts with 5 reels and 5 rows, but can expand up to 7 reels and 7 rows. Above the reels you’ll find one of six collectors. These guys slurp up any of the symbols of the same colour that are connected in a cluster formation with at least one of those symbols on the top row. It’s kind of like a cluster pays meets cash collect, but with straws.

Slurpy Paytable
The paytable with 200x for 40 or more top payers

Anyway, there are 6 regular pay symbols in Slurpy, plus a wild. There’s a yellow star, pink pig, purple cake, red octopus, green triangle, and a blue robot. All of the symbols have the same value, 0.5x the bet for 1 symbol up to 200x the bet for 40+ symbols. The six regular symbols in Slurpy are in corresponding colors with the six collectors.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

The standout feature in Slurpy is the unique collector mechanic, but that’s absolutely not all! Let’s take a look at how each of the features works.

Collectors

The game has 6 collectors that each correspond in colour to one of the symbols. The collectors are at the top of the reels and slurp up wins. They can only slurp up a win if a pay symbol that’s part of a cluster (and matches their colour) is on the top row or has a clear path to it.

The connected symbols are payed out and slurped up, removing them from the grid. If you clear out all of the pay symbols then the grid increases in size by 1 reel and 1 row up to a maximum size of 7×7.

If after no new winning symbols have a clear path, a new collector/slurper is added to the top row. This continues until no new wins can be made. If a different coloured collector could make a win, then the second chance feature kicks in and that collector is swapped in to make a win.

Multiplier

When all payout symbols on the grid are cleared, the grid expands by one level, up to a 7×7 size. Clearing all symbols on this expanded grid boosts the (all wins) multiplier by +5. Multiplier symbols contribute to the all wins multiplier when included in a winning combination, and this multiplier is applied to all subsequent wins.

Feature Symbols

There are four feature symbols in Slurpy, this is what they all do:

  • Extra Collector: This symbol adds an extra collector to the game, with a limit of three collectors at once.
  • Coin Symbol: When this symbol has an unobstructed path to the top row, it pays its value multiplied by the selected bet level.
  • Super Straw Symbol: This collects all matching payout symbols on the grid, regardless of their connection to the top row.
  • Long Straw Symbol: This collects one matching cluster of payout symbols, even if it isn’t connected to the top row.
  • Double Symbol: This symbol connects two different payout symbols.

Free Spins Bonus Game

If you activate 3 bonus symbols then you begin the bonus round with 5 free spins. The current number of collectors, grid size, and all wins multiplier remain unchanged upon entering the bonus game and during free drops.

The bonus game starts with a new set of symbols. Each bonus symbol collected during this round adds 2 more free spins. The maximum possible win per game round is limited to 5,000x the bet.

Super Free Spins

The super bonus game is triggered when one of the bonus symbols is a super bonus symbol. In this round, you begin with three collectors and a fully expanded 7×7 grid.

The Final Verdict

The pay mechanic in Slurpy is definitely cool. Being able to ‘slurp up’ pay symbols and feature symbols is totally unique and makes for interesting gameplay. However, does this make up for the more mathematical stats of this game? An RTP of 94% and high volatility is usually reserved for slots with a much higher max win, so it’s a shame ELK Studios couldn’t have been a little more generous here.

The free spins rounds and bonus symbols are fun additions and do help to bump up the winning numbers, but when you compare this game to some of the other slots by ELK Studios, you can’t help but feel that it’s a little mean.

Useful Tips When Playing Slurpy

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Check The Colors On The Characters

If colors on the characters above the grid match those of a cluster that starts on the top row, you score a win.

2. Look For Special Symbols Like Coins

Coins – which appear in rows – helped trigger the biggest win in testing. Learn the special symbols before you start playing so you know what to look out for.

3. Play At A Sensible Stake

This is a volatile slot so it can burn your balance fast. Play with low stakes to avoid an early exit!
