Vikings Go Berzerk is a 2016 slot release from Yggdrasil, and one of five games in the Vikings series from this developer. It is a 5 reel game with 25 paylines and a medium-high variance. It has an array of fun features, including instant win Treasure Chests and Wilds in the base game. The objective though is to reach the free spins round where every Viking that lands on the reels battles with a Siren. If they win, then their position turns into a Sticky Wild for the round. There was certainly no shortage of action over my 200 spins. Wins came up on every 4 to 5 spins and I counted 8 Treasure Chests on reel 4 (4% of spins), though not a single Golden Treasure Chest. Every Treasure Chest produced an instant win rather than a free spins round. That isn’t surprising as the Free Spins are not supposed to be easy to unlock.

I triggered the free spins round once (fairly typical for a mid-high variance slot) through 3 scatters to get 7 spins. The modifier I was given was extra Treasure Chests. By the end of the round I had SIX sticky wilds in place thanks to Viking vs Siren battles.

A Little Dated But Still An Epic Slot By And Standards

Vikings Go Berzerk starts with a super-cool 3-d video of a Viking battle with the Sirens amidst a shipwreck on the rocks. It’s a dramatic opening suitable for an epic game. Once the game starts for real then the action plays out on a grandiose longship riding the waves, your 5 reels and 4 rows of symbols set against the backdrop of the ship’s sale. It looks a bit dated now, but thanks to the orchestral score and the compelling gameplay, that doesn’t matter too much. And in fact, the visuals get better when the bonus round kicks in and the sky darkens for battles between Viking and Siren.

The first thing to note is that each of the four Vikings has a Rage Meter displayed at the bottom of the reels. Each time you score a win with a Viking symbol on it, their respective meter will charge further. As a head start, one Viking will have their meter half-charged at the start of the game.

Fully charging a Viking meter will trigger the free spins round with 7 spins where the respective Viking is ‘Berzerk’ for the full round.

What is a Berzerk Viking? During Free Spins, when a Viking lands on the reels it goes into battle with a Siren. If it wins, the position it sits in converts to a sticky wild. The outcome of the battle is random BUT a Berzerk Viking will ALWAYS win.

The Final Verdict

Vikings Go Berzerk looks a bit dated now but it is an evergreen slot thanks to its compelling mix of features and relatively-balanced pay model. I say relatively because this is still on the higher side of mid variance so it can still be a tight play at times! Whilst the Treasure Chests are a neat feature, Vikings Go Berzerk is really all about that free spins round where adding more and more Sticky Wilds to the reels can really boost your wins.
