Very volatile and with lots of RTP saved for free spins. Be patient and you can win big here if you hit a good run of symbol upgrades and keep extending the bonus round!

Theme and Design
This is a real old skool Ancient Egyptian slot, with a strong Eye of Horus feel to it. The artwork is basic. We are in a tomb, tall pillars to right and left of the 5x3 reel set, dim light from the fire pits in the foreground, and tablets displaying hieroglyphs, pharaohs, and gods on the paytable. The animations are nice – particularly the gleaming pyramid scatter, and the moments when wilds expand and send glowing light rays out in free spins. In short, this is a particular type of game with a particular design style. If you enjoy the old Horus and other Egypt slots, you’ll love it.

RTP and Variance
Anubis Rising has a fixed RTP of 95%. That means it will be 95% wherever you play. That’s slightly under the average for slots, which is typically 96%, but these days many games come with lower settings too and you can find you are playing at 94% of even lower at times. So, in that sense, 95% ain’t bad!
The volatility, as you might expect from Blueprint, is high. So the win distribution in your session is likely to be very uneven. But of course, the game can go off on occasion too.
Maximum Win
Max payout here is a somewhat underwhelming 5,000x. This is a studio who is ready to produce games that max out at 50,000x, so we expect a bit more. You can see a list of their highest paying slots here.
Symbols and Paytable
The game plays out on 5 reels, each displaying 3 rows, with 10 paylines in play on each spin. You’ll need to land 3 or more identical symbols on a line from left to right, starting at the left most reel, to score a win.

The paytable is simple with some nice value in it. The low payers are the cards, Jack through to Ace, valued at from 0.5x for 3 10s up to 10x for 5 Aces. The premiums are the fan, cross, scarab, bird, dog and eye. These are valued at from 1x for 3 fans up to 50x for 5 eyes.
There are also THREE wilds. The Regular Wild is represented by the pharaoh in blue, and the two Super Wilds are represented by the pharaoh in gold and the Anubis character. Wilds substitute for all pay symbols to complete wins AND expand when they land on the reels IF by doing so they can help trigger a win. However, they do NOT have a pay value of their own.
Features and Gameplay
There are only those wilds to keep you interested during the base game. The rest is just payline wins and waiting for the free spins round to drop. Here is how it works:
Pyramid Scatter Triggers Bonus Round
First, the gleaming Pyramid represents the scatter. When 3 or more land then the round is triggered. You also get a pay out as follows:
- 3 scatters – 2x
- 4 scatters – 20x
- 5 scatters – 50x
You get 12 spins during which landing 1, 2 or 3 wilds gets you an additional 1, 3 or 5 free spins; and landing 1, 2 or 3 Super Wilds gets you an additional 2, 6 or 10 free spins.
Symbol Upgrades
During the round, landing wilds ALSO triggers premium symbol upgrades, shown on tablets above the reels. When a wild lands, it shines a golden light onto the next symbol to upgrade, and that symbol takes the value of the next one up in the table. You can get up to FIVE upgrades.
Before The Round Starts – Pick Me Bonus
But before the action starts, there is a Pick a Bonus round where you pick from 12 ? symbols to reveal up to 5 upgrades for the round:
- Pay symbol upgrades turn a pay symbol into the next one up in the paytable.
- Super Wild upgrades turn Regular Wilds into Super Wilds.
- The Wild + upgrade increases the odds of landing Wilds in the round.
- Gold Anubis upgrade activates a special Gold Anubis character that awards multiplier of up to 10x.
- Free Games upgrade gives you between 2 and 5 extra free spins
Final Verdict
On first impressions I wasn’t expecting much from Anubis Rising. It has the look of a game we have seen many times before, and the rules look familiar too, with expanding wilds and upgrades a very familiar combination in Ancient Egyptian slots. But in fact with the extras delivered though the Pick Me upgrades, including those Gold Anubis symbols, and the role of Super Wilds, the game in fact had more to offer. In addition, the low hit rate and high bonus round also made this game a lot of fun to play. Not Blueprint’s finest then, but still worth a spin for those who enjoy the Egyptian style slots.
Testing Notes
I played 200 spins on Big Bass Floats My Boat on Pragmatic Play’s test server prior to release to test the game. This is what happened.
- Stake Size: $1
- Start balance: $1,000
- End balance: $986.50
- Hit Rate: 7.5% (15 winning spins in 200)
- Biggest Win: 72.5x
- Free Spins Round: 3
Anubis Rising played like a true high variance game with a massive amount of that 95% RTP weighted towards the free spins round. The win rate from the base game was insanely low at just 7.5% which is unheard of. That tells you everything you need to know about this slot.

The good news is, I didn’t have to wait long for the free spins round to trigger each time. It came around 3 times in 200 spins, delivering wins of 20x, 72.5x and 19.5x. Success depends on how far down the road you get with the symbol upgrades and how many extra spins you can earn from the pick me round and wilds. By the end of my most successful free spins round I had benefited from 20 spins and a few upgrades. But clearly Anubis Rising can deliver a lot more than that if it’s in the mood.
The lesson is, be patient and don’t panic if you go 20 or even 25 spins without a win, the free spins round is (probably) just around the corner!
