Aztec Treasure Hunt
By Pragmatic Play
Aztec Treasure Hunt by Pragmatic Play takes the brilliant Money Collect feature and combines it with powerful wild symbols that not only activate money symbols, but apply multipliers of up to 50x to them as well. It’s played on 5 reels and 3 rows, offering 20 paylines and a max win of 5,000x your stake. The default RTP of 96.03% is pretty reasonable, but watch out for that high volatility.

Theme and Design
Aztec slots are a dime a dozen, but it would be a little unfair to penalise Aztec Treasure Hunt for that reason alone. This game takes a very popular theme and pretty much lives up to expectations, with ruins from the mighty Aztec empire in the background and somewhat predictable Aztec warriors on the reels.

The background in the base game is vibrant and green, as though in the mountains, while the free spins round is dark, with glittering sparks and a glimpse inside the temple. The graphics are beautiful, crisp, and every bit as polished as you’d expect from Pragmatic Play, but there just isn’t a way to award points for originality here.
RTP and Variance
This slot has a default RTP of 96.03%, but is also available at certain operators with an RTP of 94.99% and 94.04%. So, it’s seriously worth making sure you’re playing at the highest RTP rate available, which is fine, but not brilliant. The volatility is high, so expect some swings between winning nothing at all and potentially getting close to that top prize.
Maximum Win
The top payout of 5,000x your stake isn’t bad, but it’s not particularly spectacular. When you look at it alongside the RTP it feels about as expected, though the high volatility might put a few players off.
If you’re looking for a bigger top payout then there are loads of Aztec themed games offering large wins. Temple of Tollan actually has a better RTP and a max win of 15,000x your stake.
Symbols and Paytable
Aztec Treasure Hunt is played on 5 reels and 3 rows with 20 paylines. Wins are created by landing 3 or more identical symbols on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost reel.
The game includes 10 pay symbols plus wilds and scatters. The low-value symbols are 10, J, Q, K, and A, paying between 2x and 6x the bet for 5 of a kind. The premium symbols are a sword, an axe, a green female warrior, a purple male warrior, and a golden warrior, paying between 10x and 50x the bet for 5 of a kind.

The wild symbol, designed as a golden mask, substitutes for regular symbols and acts as a Collect Symbol too, which we’ll cover later.
The Scatter Money Symbol, depicted as a golden coin, triggers the Bonus Game when 5 or more land on the reels, carrying cash values from 0.5x to 50x the bet.
Features and Gameplay
Aztec Treasure Hunt has a small but perfectly formed selection of features, each adding something unique to the gameplay. Let’s take a look at exactly how the mechanics work.
Wild Symbol
The wild symbol can substitute for any pay symbols, but also can award a direct payout. Depending on whether you land 3, 4, or 5 wild symbols, you’ll get a payout of 5x, 15x, or 50x the bet. Not content with two functions, the wild symbol also acts as a collect symbol, collecting all money symbols on the reels.
Money Collect
Money symbols can appear on any of the reels with values of between 0.5x and 50x the bet. If they land at the same time as wild symbols then each wild on the reels will collect the total value of all money symbols. Wilds can also land with a random multiplier of between 2x and 50x the bet.
Free Spins
If you land 5 or more money symbols then the free spins round starts with 9 free spins. Before the start of the round, the values of all money symbols is added together. This value becomes the starting amount for the progressive multiplier (displayed in a chest next to the reels). Every time a wild lands it awards the current collected value, multiplied by its own multiplier (if it has one). You can also get an additional 3 free spins by landing 5 or more money symbols.
Final Verdict
It’s a little harder to get excited about another Aztec slot, considering Pragmatic Play alone already have maybe a dozen of them. However, the money collect feature in Aztec Treasure Hunt works really well, especially in tandem with the ‘do-everything’ wilds. Not satisfied with substituting for pay symbols, wilds in this game do it all, they collect money, they come with multipliers. They’re without a doubt the most exciting mechanic in the game.
The default RTP is plenty generous enough, though the high volatility feels a little spikey! The max win of 5,000x your stake isn’t massive, but with all of the mechanics at play here, it does at least feel attainable.
Testing Notes
Test spins and results analysis by Mark Wadie.
Results from 250 spins for free on Aztec Treasure Hunt on Pragmatic Play’s test servers.
- Stake Size: 1
- Start balance: 100,000
- End balance: 99,938.5
- Hit Rate: 26% (65 winning spins in 250)
- Biggest Win: 48.75x
- Bonus Round: 0
There’s a nice upbeat feel to Aztec Treasure Hunt thanks to the jungle drum soundtrack and colorful graphics. The gameplay ticked along at a good pace too with a 26% win rate – that’s over 1 in 4 spins producing a win. There’s not a whole lot going on in the base game. It’s just about landing wilds and hopefully high value coins together to activate the wins. I did pick up a 48.75x payout in this way, the best from 250 spins. The free spins round didn’t trigger once in that time, so that’s a warning about how tight the game might be. It looks like much of the RTP may be saved back for that event with it’s progressive multiplier.

Take aways? Not the most memorable Aztec slot we’ve played but if you enjoy the simpler ones with basic cash collects then it could work for you.
