Book of Power is an Egyptian-themed online slot from Relax Gaming with 5 reels and 10 paylines. It follows in the tradition of ‘Book of’ games made famous by Book of Dead. There are two free spins rounds. In the standard round, triggered by landing 3 or more standard Book symbols, one symbol will expand to full reel height to complete wins. In an effort to trigger free spins I extended the usual 200 spins test session to 300 spins. But still no joy! Shows what a stubbornly volatile game this one is. I counted 8 times when 2 books showed, but no third. Which can be very frustrating. The best moment was a 76x win across 2 wilds and 3 pyramids which you can see in this screenshot. Despite this, I still enjoyed playing Book of Power. Production is superb and there are plenty of exciting animations to look out for including the fairy dust that accompanies wins and the Explorer who adopts a pair of shades when he appears on a payline!

Excellent Production Including Stardust Animations and 3d Book Symbols

It’s fun to see how each game studio brings their own style to the ‘Book of’ format. Just as Quickspin’s Book of Duat is most definitely a Quickspin production, so Book of Power is a Relax Gaming one. The artistic style is instantly recognisable from the studio who brought you the Temple Tumble series, with its clean and warm hue.

The backdrop is what looks like the outer wall of a temple with two huge stone statues of Pharaohs. There is a kind of dusty filter over the whole scene which makes it feel like you’ve just walked into a recently opened tomb. The reels themselves are crystal-clear however, with sharp illustrations of Egyptian-icons. There are also cool animations – the Book, for example, turns 3d when it lands and emits a kind of Disney fairy dust to give a sense of magic. And our Explorer, looking like a friend of the Temple Tumble adventurers, animates when he lands on the reels. And to complete the production there is a dramatic orchestral score that strays a little from the traditional Egyptian sounds we’re used do in these games.

So, altogether, a top-class production with a luxurious, quality feel.

These are valued at from 0.5x for 3 10s up to 15x for 5 Aces. Then there are the picture premium symbols. These are the Pyramid, Temple, Pharaoh and Explorer, valued at from 0.5x for 2 Pyramids up to 500x for 5 Explorers.

In this instance the Wild is represented by the Books – blue and red. These substitute for all other symbols to complete paylines but are also instrumental in unlocking the free spins round which I will explain further down. And if the randomly chosen symbol happens to be the one that is already the expander, then a 1x multiplier is added to it instead.

The Final Verdict

In a crowded niche, Book of Power, has enough innovation and twists to make it stand out and become a hit in its own right. As we expect from Relax, this is a carefully planned and developed game with really enjoyable graphics and gameplay.

The addition of extra expanders and multipliers in the first free spins round can potentially propel your wins upwards significantly. But it’s the Power Free Spins round where most of the epic payouts will come. Consecutive symbol upgrades and multipliers at the top end of the paytable along with re-triggers mean that you could be looking at full screens of Explorers with multipliers as well.
