We’re all familiar with the Book of … games and the evolution from originals like Novomatic’s Book of Ra and Play n Go’s Book of Dead to the outstanding Book of Shadows from high risk trail-blazers, No Limit City. In each case the basics stay pretty much the same – simple 5×3 slot play with not much to go on in the base game before the free spins round opens the path to full-screen glory with one chosen expanding symbol. If you like one, the chances are you’ll like pretty much all the Book of … games, and despite their generic format, it’s still always a pleasure when a new one arrives on the scene to test our luck on.

Book of Duat features Quickspin’s own heroine, the simply-named Anna the Explorer, who is immersed in an exotic adventure set in a warren of Egyptian caves. There’s nothing too luxurious about the artwork here – just a rocky background and symbols all themed on ancient Egypt, including the usual scarabs and animal-gods. Meanwhile, exotic Egyptian music plays in the background to add to the atmosphere. But the real test of the quality of the game will be in the mix of maths and the bonus features which here include an interesting Pick and Click game that selects the features to be active during Free Spins.

What is RTP?

Let’s start with the Return to Player – read more on this here – and the profile of the slot shows it to be a 96.27% which is maybe a little above average for the industry. The volatility level though is sky high – given a 5/5 by Quickspin themselves. This is pretty standard for Book of … slots and anyone who has played one before will know how frustrating they can be whilst always offering a tantalising glimpse of what could be with a high paying expanding icon in the bonus round. So, you’lll need to be prepared for this. The minimum bet is 20p – it would be useful if it was lower to be honest, and that is probably going to put off a lot of lower rollers who might find the variance too much to gamble on this Egyptian adventure.

For those who are happy to take the plunge, the maximum payout of 32,760x stake could be yours if you’re lucky with the Multipliers.

Symbols and Paytable

Book of Duat follows the usual 5 reels and 3 rows format, with simple but pleasing illustrations and backdrop. The symbols are all themed on ancient Egypt and include premiums in the form of Anubis, Sobek, Pharaoh, Anna Explorer, the Book of Duat and a series of high cards – 10 to Ace – to award the lower value wins. The Anubis and Sobek both pay up to 75x your bet for 5 of a kind, the Pharaoh awards up to 200x, while Anna the Explorer can pay up to 500x your bet for 5 matches.

The Book of Duat symbol is the Wild and this can substitute for all other symbols in the game to form wins. This symbol is also the scatter and can trigger Free Spins when 3 or more appear. It is also the highest-paying symbol, awarding 2500x your bet for 5 of a kind.

Features and Gameplay

This series of slots is never feature-packed. Instead it relies on the simple model of Wilds in the base game and the expanding icons in the bonus round. However, Quickspin have chosen to add a further element to the free spins to give you the chance to add more spins and more expanding icons to the gameplay.

Wilds

The Book of Duat symbol is the Wild for the game. This can stand in for all the other symbols and trigger Free Spins if 3 or more land on the reels together. The Wild also pays 2,500x stake for 5 of a kind.

Free Spins

If you land 3 Wild symbols, you’ll activate the Free Spins round but before this begins you get to play a unquie Pick and Click game. Initially you get 4 Free Spins and 1 Expanding Symbol but added to that you will get the extra features from the Pick and Click game. If you land at least 3 more Wilds during Free Spins, you’ll receive another 2 Free Spins and up to 4 extra Picks.

Pick and Click

You will get 3, 6 or 12 Picks depending on the number of Wilds that triggered the round. To play, take your Picks from the screen of 20 tiles on a 5×4 grid. The tiles can reveal up to 10 Free Spins, up to 4 Expanding Symbols and up to 5x Multipliers. Expanding Symbols expand to cover the whole reel and these pay all ways.

Bonus Buy – Not Available in the UK

You can enjoy a 3-level Bonus Buy feature. This lets you pay 150x stake to trigger 3 Wilds, 500x stake to trigger 4 Wilds or 1,600x stake to trigger 5 Wilds. These guaranteed Wilds will activate the Free Spins round.

Book of Duat has an exotic atmosphere and is highly volatile and it can offer some great rewards for keen adventurers but clearly those with less appetite for risk might find it too unpredictable, even with the tempting 32,760x stake top payout.

We said it would be all about the maths and it is. The opportunity to score more free spins in the Pick and Click is excellent, but bear in mind that you start with a low valuation of 4 – most Book of … games will hit you with 10 to start, so you have some catching up to do even to be on level terms with the free spins round in a game like Book of Dead for example. Then there are those fabulous multipliers. Now, if we are talking about hitting a top payout of 32,000x + then you’ll need the 5x to hit during the Pick and Click. Then, if you can get a high value expander the opportunities are huge.  But of course, those events are going to be super-rare. But this fun twist on the generic Book of …format makes this a nice iteration from Quickspin.

In summary, this is a cool new take on the classic Book Of games and it’s good to see Anna the Explorer back in action on our screens. The extras add more fun and interest to the game, in some ways making it feel quite different from other Book Of slots. And if you enjoy highly volatile Egyptian adventures, you’ll love the intensity of this one.
