How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

Cash Crew is a dark heist slot from Hacksaw Gaming, played out on a 5×5 grid with 14 paylines. Landing Grab Em symbols collects any visible cash symbols worth up to 500x each, whilst multipliers with wilds are applied to any adjacent cash values as well as pay line wins. There are two free spins rounds, both with enhanced odds of hitting big cash and multiplier values, as well as persistent multiplier spots on the grid where multipliers are  guaranteed to land on each spin. Max win is 10,000x and spins start at 10p.

Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played Cash Crew

IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.

Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers

I played 300 spins on Cash Crew on Hacksaw Gaming’s test server prior to release to test the game. This is what happened.

  • Stake Size: €1
  • Start balance: €5,000
  • End balance: €4,846
  • Hit Rate: 29.6% (89 winning spins in 300)
  • Biggest Win: 13x
  • Free Spins Round: 0

Cash Crew is one of those games that seems to like delivering streaks of wins. My first 5 spins each produced a win, including a 5x from a Cash Collect. But then I went 10 spins with nothing. And that set the tone for this 300 spins session. Overall, the hit rate was decent enough at 29.6% which is roughly 1 in 3 spins. I never scored any really good payouts though, maxing at just 13x and mainly seeing 2x or less.

Cash Crew 13x Win
A 13x win from Cash Collects

The Cash Collect feature that requires a Grab Em and Cash symbol to land at the same time triggered 12 times over the 300 spins. That’s 4% of spins so don’t expect it to be a regular. But it does at least give you some bigger wins that most payline ones. Or at least it did in my session with a 13x, a 9x and a few 5x’s.

As for the free spins round – not a sniff in 300 spins. That feels tight. But it can go that way with Hacksaw. On another day, it might have triggered 3 times.

Overall, despite the damage done to the balance, this is a good-looking game with great atmosphere. Just keep in mind that it is volatile, and set your stake accordingly.

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"A classic Hacksaw slot with moody production, high variance and stacked with high multiplier potential in the free spins round! Awesome!"

Overall Score: 8.8

Hacksaw Doing What They Do Best – An Ominous and Moody Slot

A heist slot from Hacksaw was always going to go down the dark and moody path. This one is creepy, set against the backdrop of a gritty urban scene at night … in a heavy rainstorm, complete with lightning. There are tall, trenchcoated gangsters either side of the reels, bearing arms and wearing strange masks, and the soundtrack is a slowed-down electro pulse punctuated with sirens and rumbling thunder. Basically, it’s everything you want a volatile Hacksaw slot to be. Another quality production.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Cash Crew has 4 RTP settings – 96.26%, 94.23%, 92.17% and 88.29%. There is a big difference between playing at 96.26% and 88.29% and you want to avoid the lower rates which some UK slot site will choose for the game. I recommend MrQ from Lindar Media which consistently runs slots from Hacksaw at the optimum RTP – 96.26% in this case.

Wherever you play you can check the RTP of the game for yourself by hitting the hamburger menu icon under the reels then the ‘info’ button to bring up the game rules. Then scroll through until you see ‘Return to Player. If it’s less than 94% I would look to play elsewhere.

This is also one of Hacksaw’s more volatile slots, so expect an uneven win distribution. It can produce some big win sequence but also rinse your balance in no time.

Maximum Win

Our Score 8

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The maximum win in Cash Crew is 10,000x. That is about average for Hacksaw slots. You can find bigger potential in slots like 2 Wild 2 Die (15,000x) and RIP City (12,500x), but those are rarities rather than the rule.

If you enjoy playing for the big money prizes then I recommend that you check out our article on the highest max win slots.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

This is a 5-reel game with 5 rows per reel and 14 paylines. Wins are scored by landing 3 or more identical symbols across a line from left to right, starting at the left most reel.

Cash Crew Paytable
Paytable with 10x for 5 top premiums

There are nine pay symbols to win on. The low value ones are the cards – Jack, Queen, King and Ace. These all have the same value of 0.2x for 3 on a line up to 2x for 5 on a line. The 5 premium symbols are the 4 gang members in turquoise, purple, yellow and red and the gang leader in green. These are valued at from 0.4x for 3 green up to 10x for 5 reds.

There are also Wilds which substitute for any pay symbol to complete paylines AND pay out at 25x for 5 on a line. These also have multiplier powers as we will find out in the next section.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

Land Grab ‘Em Symbols To Collect The Cash

A core component of the gameplay here is the Cash Collect features. Cash symbols, represented by the green guy with the glasses, have values of 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x or 500x. Their values are ONLY collected when a ‘Grab Em’ symbol lands at the same time.

Multipliers and Wilds

The wild symbol here also comes with a multiplier value, printed on the front. Whilst the wild does its job of substituting for any pay symbol to complete lines, the multiplier part does TWO jobs.

First, its value will be applied to all win lines it forms a part of. Second, its value is applied to any cash symbols in the surrounding 3×3 area if a Grab Em symbol lands at the same time.

Multiplier values may be 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, 10x or 25x. When the value is 5x or higher, then a ? is printed on the wild and the value only reveals itself when the Grab Ems symbol lands.

Finally – if you get lucky with more than one Wild Multiplier on a win line then their values are MULTIPLIED before the win amount is calculated. So a 3x and a 5x become 15x!

Two Free Spins Rounds

As we see with many Hacksaw Gaming slots, there are TWO free spins rounds in Cash Crew. They come with enhanced odds of hitting the features you see in the base game, and a few more treats.

The Vault – 6 Free Spins

The Vault is unlocked by landing THREE FS scatters during the base game. In this round, the odds of higher value cash symbols and multipliers are improved AND when a multiplier lands, it activated the position on the grid it lands on. And thereafter, on EVERY spin, a multiplier will land in that position.

You can extend this round by landing a Stopwatch symbol which gets you between 2 and 6 more spins, as indicated on the watches screen.

The High Security Valut – 9 Free Spins

The most powerful round in the game is this one – High Security Vault. You’ll need to land 4 FS scatters during the base game to trigger this one.

The rules are the same as in The Vault – better odds of landing higher value cash symbols and multipliers, persistent multiplier positions throughout the round, and the chance to extend the round by landing stopwatch symbols. But now an added extra – the minimum value for a cash symbol is 5x.

The Final Verdict

Hacksaw Gaming fans will love Cash Crew. It’s monochrome, cinematic visuals and ominous soundtrack are suggestive of classics like Hand of Anubis and Itero. And whilst not quite on the same level as those two – the free spins rounds just don’t compare – the slow grind of the base game before a shift in pace when a winning streak kicks in, and the chance to see big wins from multipliers, are the exact characteristics of the slots that make this studio so popular. If that sounds like your kind of game, then dive in. But do bear in mind that, as our test session showed, this is a volatile slot that can burn you hard before it kicks out any of those big wins.

Useful Tips When Playing Cash Crew

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Look Out For Those Powerful Multipliers

The game really kicks on when you land a few multiplier wilds in the base game. Remember, they apply to all adjacent cash symbol values so a good 3x or more can really make a difference!

2. Check The RTP Wherever You Play

It’s always important to maximise your chances of winning by playing at the optimum RTP settings. So check before you spin and don’t settle for less than 96.26%!

3. Choose a Low Stake Value

With high variance slots it’s always important to exercise good bankroll management by choosing a stake level that is low relative to your balance. Games like this can burn you quickly so play sensibly.

4. Play At Our Recommended UK Slot Sites

We recommend that you play at sites like the ones listed on this page that are licensed in the UK and operate under strict laws that make them fair, safe and secure. Never play at unlicensed sites.
