DJ Cat
By Push Gaming
DJ Cat is a dance music-themed online slot from Push Gaming in the style of their previous release, DJ Fox. There are 4 reels in play but the game starts with only 1 row active at the bottom of the grid. Landing arrow symbols activates the next row up and triggers re-spins. To score wins you must land CD symbols with multiplier values on them in sequences on active rows. VIP symbols also activate multiplier dials for each row. Higher rows have higher multiplier possibilities. The max win here is 10,000x and spins start at 10p.

Theme and Design
Push Gaming take us right to the heart of the dancefloor for this slot, just beneath the DJ booth where DJ Cat is spinning tunes. It’s a bright and cheerful game with neon laser lights, booming speaker stacks and a bright, shiny game grid taking center stage. There are nice spinning disc animations on the reels and vibrant VIP symbols dropping. If you liked liked the production style of previous slots like DJ Fox and Jammin Jars form the same provider then you’ll be at home here.
RTP and Variance
DJ Cat has 5 RTP settings, like many Push Gaming slots. That means your casino will decide which setting to run the game at. The options are 96.32%, 95.2%, 94.03%, 90.08% and 88.4%. There is a significant difference between playing at 96.32% and playing at 88.4% and the lower rates are to be avoided. I recommend playing at MrQ from Lindar Media who consistently run slots at their optimum RTP levels.
You can check the RTP yourself wherever you play by hitting the hamburger menu in the top right of the screen, then the ‘?’ at the foot of the game info page. Scroll down until you see Return to Player. If it’s less than 94.03% I would try finding the game at another site.
This is also a high variance slot so it will be unpredictable. You can expect an uneven win distribution, but there is certainly the potential to kick out some big payouts from time to time.
Maximum Win
The maximum win from a single spin in DJ Cat is 10,000x. That is good, but a long way short of Push Gaming’s highest max win games like Razor Returns (100,000x), Dinopolis (50,000x) and Jammin Jars (50,000x).
Symbols and Paytable
DJ Cat has a unique set up, unlike the standard slot format. There are 4 reels, each with 5 rows. However, only ONE row is active on your initial spin. To activate further rows you need to land arrow symbols on your spin.
Landing an arrow symbol activates the next row up and triggers a re-spin. If you land an arrow on the newly activated row on your re-spin then the next row up gets activated with a further re-spin, and so on. Until the maximum of FIVE rows is activated, OR no arrow lands and the game re-sets. You can’t land arrows on the top row.
There is no traditional pay table in DJ Cat. Instead, a ‘win what you see’ format is used which is explained in the next section.
Features and Gameplay
It’s certainly different, but DJ Cat is simple to follow once you’ve played a few spins with its ‘win what you see’ pay model and multiplier features. Here is how it works.
Win What You See
The only symbols you see in the game are CDs, VIPs, Double VIPs or duds. CDs carry a value of 0 to 9. Wins are calculated as 10% of the values displayed on the CDs. However, values are NOT added together, but read from left to right. Whilst keeping in mind that a ‘dud’ will block the sequence.
So, if you see a 5-0-dud-dud on a row then the payout would be 50 x 10% of your bet, which would be £5 from a £1 bet. However, if you see a 5-dud-dud-0 from your spin, the payout is just 5 x 10% of your bet because the duds block the sequence. At a £1 bet that is a 20p payout.
The payout changes when more than one number greater than 0 is present. So, if you have a 5-dud-3-dud sequence on a row, then the 5 and the 3 are ADDED together. That gives you an 8 x 10% of your bet, or 80p from a £1 bet.
And if you had a sequence like 1-7-8-0 from your spin, then the total win would be 1,780 x 10% of your bet. That would be £178 form a £1 bet.
In simple terms you are looking for as many numbers as possible to land without duds between them for the biggest wins.
VIP Symbols, Multipliers and Re-Spins
The other feature in the game is the VIP symbol which comes as regular or double. This activates row multipliers located on dials to the left of the reels. So, when a VIP symbol appears on an active row it will increase your multiplier for that row to the next level before a re-spin is awarded during which only dud positions re-spins whilst CD symbols are locked.
Once the re-spins are done, then your wins are calculated and multiplied by the highlighted multiplier value on the dial for their respective rows.
It is possible to land more than one VIP symbol on an active row. In fact, you can land as many as are required to boost each row’s dial to its maximum level.
These are the multiplier values associated with each row:
- Row 1 (bottom row): 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x
- Row 2: 1x, 3x, 5x, 10x
- Row 3: 1x, 5x, 10x, 15x
- Row 4: 1x, 10x, 15x, 20x
- Row 5: 1x, 20x, 50x, 100x
Finally, the DOUBLE VIP symbol causes the multiplier dial to increase by two positions rather than one.
Push Up For More Active Rows
You can also play with more than one row active on your initial spin by activating the Push Up feature. This requires an increased stake as follows:
- 2.5x your stake: 2 rows active on initial spin (96.39% RTP)
- 5x your stake: 3 rows active on initial spin (96.27% RTP)
- 7.5x your stake: 4 rows active on initial spin (96.25% RTP)
- 10x your stake: 5 rows active on initial spin (96.37% RTP)
Final Verdict
This will be a really fun slot for those who enjoy high volatility gaming. The gameplay is original, and actually very simple, and the production style is spot on, as always from Push Gaming. From my test session it was easy to see where and how you might hit those big payouts. There is A LOT of power in those multiplier dials, and if you can open up the full grid and trigger a couple of Double VIPs then the results could be massive. But of course, the caveat as always is that DJ Cat can equally be a grind with lots of low wins and frustrating near misses. If you can handle those low times whilst waiting for the big moments, then DJ Cat makes another exciting option from a top studio.
Testing Notes
I played 250 spins on DJ Cat on Push Gaming’s test server prior to release to test the game. This is what happened.
- Stake Size: £1
- Start balance: £1,000
- End balance: £910.60
- Hit Rate: 25.2% (63 winning spins in 250)
- Biggest Win: 19.8x
The hit rate from this short test session of 250 spins came in at 25.2% which is about average for an online slot, but the wins were not evenly spread. In fact, the distribution was about what you expect from a high variance game with streaks of losing spins before a short burst of wins.
The gameplay is fun and something a bit different but from this experience DJ Cat can be a frustrating game to play because it often teases you with potential only to deliver a lame payout or nothing at all. For example, it’s possible to crank up those multiplier dials and expect a big win only to find you land a row of duds. And on the one occasion I did get as far as opening up all FIVE rows, the total win was just 9.2x.
The biggest payout I got was a 19.8x which came when a Double VIP landed on row 1, boosting the multiplier dial to 3x, then two 6x CDs landed on positions 1 and 2. That gave a 6.6x win x the 3x multiplier.
In short, a classic high variance game from Push with loads of potential but tight as hell too.
