Eye of Dead
By Blueprint Gaming
Eye of Dead is a 5-reel, Ancient Egyptian slot from Blueprint Gaming. It is a high variance game in the ‘Book of’ tradition. That means the gameplay is simple, utilising expanding wilds in the base game and free spins round to drive wins. You’ll need 3 Book Scatters to unlock that bonus round where every expanding wild that lands will trigger one premium symbol to upgrade to the next level up as well as giving you one more free spin. This enhances the paytable and makes it possible to scores wins of up to 50,000x. Play Eye of Dead from 10p per spin.

Theme and Design
Retro Production and Sounds Won't Appeal To Everyone
Eye of Dead is like a trip back in time to the 70s. Where Play n Go have been updating the production style of their Book of games to make them slicker each time, Blueprint have forgone any plans to bring Eye of Dead into the modern age. Instead, we get a kind of retro-style design with classic Vegas casino slots sounds to accompany every spin. It’s not my cup of tea but it might be yours. If you like the old cabinet video slots then you’ll love this.
There are some good moments where the wild lands in the bonus round and fires a laser beam at a row of pay symbols above the reel set, upgrading them as it does so. Blueprint have tapped into the supernatural element of these Ancient Egyptian games there and it actually looks quite cool. But to be honest, this is one of those marmite games that you will either love or hate depending on your tastes.
RTP and Variance
Eye of Dead has a an RTP of 96.31%. That is about average for an online slot so we can have no complaints there. Of course, like all good Book of … slots, Eye of Dead is a volatile one so whilst it can produce huge wins it can also be frustrating, holding much of its RTP back for the all-important free spins round.
Maximum Win
The maximum payout on Eye of Dead is a whopping 50,000x per spin. That is big, even for a Book of game and shows that Blueprint have sought to stamp their mark on this genre of games.
Symbols and Paytable
Win Up To 50x For Five Premiums Or Wilds
The traditional model for Book of games is 5 reels and 3 rows and 10 paylines. Blueprint Gaming have made no effort to deviate from this. Paylines pay out for 3 or more identical symbols from left to right and there is some great value in the paytable.
Low pay symbols are the cards, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. These pay out between 0.5x for 3 of a kind up to 10x for 5 of a kind. The mid-range symbols are scarabs, and ornaments with values of up to 25x for 5 of a kind. And finally, the top level premiums made up of a god, a pharaoh and the hero are all valued at between 30x and 50x for five of a kind.
The most important symbol however is the Wild which has multiple functions. As usual for these games, it subs in for other symbols to complete winlines. It will also expand to full reel height if in doing so it can complete winlines.
Features and Gameplay
The gameplay in Eye of Dead couldn’t be simpler. The scatter is the Book symbol. It is valued at 2x, 20x or 50x for 3, 4 or 5 landing anywhere on the reels on one spin. And it also gets you 12 free spins.
The difference between the bonus round and the base game is that now the Wild expander has even more value. When 1, 2 or 3 wilds land it adds 1, 3 or 5 more spins to your total.
And it also triggers a symbol transform in which the lowest premium is upgraded one place in the paytable. This continues until ONLY top premiums, the hero, and low paying cards are in play. As you can see in this screenshot, when the upgrade happens, a laser beam appears out of the expanded wild. It passes over symbols displayed above the reels, upgrading them as it does.
Final Verdict
For me the appeal of this sort of slot is limited. There are many ‘Book of’ style games out there that are much more interesting and creative than this one, including Play n Go’s Ghost of Dead and Nolimit City’s Book of Shadows for example. However, if you like a dose of retro production cut from 70s cloth and Egyptian slots are your thing then Eye of Dead can still provide some thrills. The big redeeming feature of course is that 50,000x max win. But aside from that we should also give credit to that progressive free spins round where continual symbol upgrades and extra spins triggered by expanding wilds might create some thrilling moments. So, to give it its due, whilst Eye of Dead didn’t work for me, its simple gameplay and big potential make it a slot will probably still be around for many years to come.
Testing Notes
I played 200 spins on Eye Of Dead for real money at Casumo Casino to test the game and this is what happened.
- Stake Size: £0.1
- Start balance: £33.97
- End balance: £27.77
- Biggest Win: 36x
- Free Spins: 3
- Session Time: 19 minutes 48 seconds
Eye of Dead retro style doesn’t suit my tastes but as a game it still has its moments. Despite its volatility I unlocked free spins 3 times over 200 spins. The wins were small – 36x, 10x and 28x respectively – but it’s quite fun to watch the expanding wilds land and the laser beam upgrading the premium symbols at the top of the reels. If you can keep that round going by landing more wilds to add to your spins total, with all symbols upgraded, its possible to see how much bigger payouts could be triggered.
