Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played Gem Elevator
IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.
Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers
Test spins and results analysis by Mark Wadie.
Results from 250 spins for free on Gem Elevator on Pragmatic Play’s test servers.
- Stake Size: 1
- Start balance: 100,000
- End balance: 99,956
- Hit Rate: 16.4% (41 winning spins in 250)
- Biggest Win: 121.3x
- Bonus Round: 0
I got strong Fire in the Hole vibes from the soundtrack here but Gem Elevator has nothing of the quality of that NLC classic. It was a tough play to sit through 250 spins particularly with a win rate of just 16.4%. That’s less than 1 win in 5. The idea of the nudging reels with wild multipliers sounds better than it was in reality. Partly because multipliers with any decent value rarely seemed to show up. The game did kick out a really nice 121.3x win at one point which was the big highlight, thanks to 4 multiplier wilds appearing in the top corner as shown in this screenshot. But nothing much else of note happened in 250 spins, and certainly no sign of the free spins round.
Of course, on another day it could have gone differently and we should keep in mind that high volatility slots like this can be tough at times. But I didn’t feel the production had enough to carry the game through those.
What We Liked
- Simple gameplay
- Nudging reels can bring big multiplier wilds into play
- Multipliers combine when more than one appear in a cluster
- Solid 10,000x max win
What We Didn't like
- Low win rate in testing at 16.4%
- Quite boring gameplay

What Our Reviewer Says ...
"Gem slots fans might like it but not really a classic from Pragmatic Play"
Overall Score: 7.2
Theme & Design
Our Score 7
There are plenty of mining themed slots out there, which makes perfect sense – hitting that max win must feel the same as striking a rock lined with gold. This one has a bearded miner alongside the reels, and glinting gems in the cave background.
The reels are full of sparkling gemstones and hewn from rough rock. It ticks all of the boxes for a mining slot, but doesn’t necessarily bring anything particularly unique to the table.
RTP and Variance
Our Score 7
What is RTP?
RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next. Read more here. What is Variance?
Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.Gem Elevator has a default RTP of 96.53%, but also has two other RTPs that operators can choose to use, 95.51% and 94.54%. The default RTP is plenty generous, but make sure you’re not playing with the other two as these are a little mean.
The sound RTP is combined with high volatility, meaning you’ll need a decent bankroll to handle the swings.Â
Maximum Win
Our Score 7
What Is Maximum Win?
Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.This slot has a top payout of 10,000x your stake, which isn’t half bad! However, there are an absolute ton of mining slots out there, so if you’re looking for a higher max win then you don’t have to look far. For example, Space Miners Dream Drop takes a considerable hit to RTP (94%) but does offer a progressive jackpot and a non-progressive max win of 50,000x your stake.
Symbols and Paytable
Our Score 8
Gem Elevator is played on 6 reels and 5 rows, utilizing a cluster pays mechanic where winning combinations require at least 5 identical symbols connected horizontally or vertically.
The game features 8 pay symbols plus a wild and a scatter. The lower value symbols include small blue, purple, green, and orange gems, which pay between 10x and 25x the bet for clusters of 13 or more. The premium symbols are large green, blue, purple, and red gems, rewarding between 40x and 500x the bet for clusters of 13 or more.Â
The golden nugget Wild symbol appears on all reels, substituting for all regular symbols and carrying multiplier values from 1x to 10x.
Features and Gameplay
Our Score 7
Gem Elevator has some fun features that help to keep gameplay genuinely exciting. Let’s take a look at how they all work.
Tumble Wins
The tumble feature is activated every time you make a win. The winning symbols are removed from the reels and new symbols tumble into their space. If these make a winning combination too, then the remove and tumble happens again and again until no new wins are created.
Wild Symbol
The wild symbol is a golden nugget and can appear on any of the reels. It can substitute for any normal symbols to help form clusters. During the Elevator Nudge feature it can appear with multipliers attached which are applied to wins that it’s part of.Â
Elevator Nudge Feature
At any point after wins have finished, any number of reels can nudge upwards or downwards up to 5 spaces. If this forms a winning combination during the nudging then these are awarded and the nudging carries on. Nudges can introduce wilds with multipliers of 1x to 10x onto the screen. If these wilds nudge without making a win then their multiplier doubles each time.
Free Spins With Nudges
If you land 4, 5, or 6 scatters then the bonus game begins with 10, 15, or 20 free spins respectively. On each free spin, one or more reels are chosen to nudge up or down. You can nab more free spins by landing 4, 5, or 6 scatters (5, 8, or 10 more free spins).
The Final Verdict
We seemingly can’t get enough of mining slots and this one is a worthwhile addition to the pile. The elevator nudge feature is a really nice touch, which is likely to be how most players get close to that 10,000x max win. The free spins round is pretty generous too and it’s nice that you can reload by landing more scatters.
The graphics are sound, with a polished look, but the theme doesn’t offer anything particularly new or exciting. When playing with the default RTP you’re getting a pretty good deal, but do look out for operators using the lower rates.
Useful Tips When Playing Gem Elevator
Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.
1. Look For Wilds With Multipliers
To turn small wins into bigger ones look for those multiplier wilds that come into play when the reels nudge up or down after a winning spin.
2. Check The RTP
Before you spin with your own money check the RTP on the game information screen. Some slot sites choose the lower rates and are to be avoided.
3. Play Low Stakes
High variance slots like this one can burn your balance down fast so its advisable to bet with low stakes whilst you wait for the big moments to drop.
