How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

Hand of Midas is the latest video slot game available at new slot sites in the UK and delivered by Pragmatic Play. Normally famous for their native American Prarie-themed games, or the recent Eye of the Storm slot, Pragmatic here turn their attention to Greek mythology – a well trodden path for studios as it is a rich source of narratives and imagery. In this instance, the story of Midas, the King who wished to be able to turn things into gold by touch, is the inspiration. Midas got his wish, but then turned his daughter to gold by accident! Or so the story goes …

Pragmatic’s eye for meticulous design, luxurious imagery and slick animations is in evidence. The reel set looks to be positions under water, with a big hand to the right holding a circular icon with a big multiplier value in it. More on that in a moment.

To trigger wins you’ll need to hit 3 matching symbols from left to right on any of the 20 active paylines. Stakes start at just 20p per spin and the top win is a pretty decent 5,000x.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Hand of Midas has a pretty average RTP set at 96.54%. This is mid range of this provider. There are examples of higher RTP slot from Pragmatic, like The Catfather at 98.1% for example.

The variance of this game is very high though, in keeping with Pragmatic Play’s tradition of rolling out big high-risk slots for fans of Megaways™-level volatility. So … be prepared for long win droughts as you try to unlock the good stuff in this slot. It may require some patience to get anywhere close to that 5,000x jackpot. Your best chance of getting there is hitting the free spins round and scoring 20x + multipliers.

If you find the top payout is too low for you but you like the variance you could try Eye of the Storm from the same year which has a 10,000x top win. Or Gates of Valhalla from 2022 which also offers 10,000x potential on a high risk model.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

The graphics on the reels are nicely designed, with a mix of playing cards representing the low value ones, 10 through to Ace. The icons look like they are etched into marble, but the wins they trigger are pretty low at just 1x and 2x the stake when 5 appear on a winline.

The higher value premium symbols on the reels are a Goblet, Fruit Basket, Treasure Chest, Midas’ daughter, a Druid and Midas himself awarding 4x, 6x, 8x, 10x and 12x the stake respectively for 5 of a kind.

The Wild is an ornamented W that appears only on reels 2, 3 and 4 to replace all other symbols except Scatter to form winning lines. And the scatter itself is depicted with Midas’ golden hand and will trigger your free spins bonus round when three of more lands on the reels.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 8

A session on The Hand of Midas can deliver some pretty intense gameplay thanks to a good mix of wilds, free spins, sticky wilds and multipliers. Here is how it all works:

Wilds and Multipliers

As we have said already, Wilds can only be seen on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th reels. When they land they will sub for any other icon to create wins. But that is not all – they also come with multipliers of 2x and 3x which are applied to your win, AND if more than one wild is active in your winline, the multipliers themselves are multiplied together!

The Ante Bet Feature

As well as the regular features, you can also up the game by choosing a Bet Multiplier with the Ante-Bet feature. This means you increase your bet per spin and enhance the multipliers from 20x up to 25x, as well as increasing the number of scatters on the reels and therefore the odds of hitting the free spins round.

The Free Spins Feature

To trigger the free spins you’ll need to land at least 3 scatters simultaneously anywhere on the reels. Before the round starts, a set of mini reels appears and spins to decide how many free plays you get. Now, EVERY spin has a multiplier of up to 3x applied to it … AND … every wild is sticky and remains on the reels once it has landed.

And … finally… the minimum win per spin is set at 10x, 20x or 30x depending on whether you triggered the round with 3, 4 or 5 scatters!

The Final Verdict

Our Score 8.0

Greek mythology has been the inspiration for many slot games over the years, some good, some not so good. Pragmatic Play’s Hand of Midas definitely falls into the former of the two categories for us. The features here are not the most sophisticated, nor are they packed in like some Megaways™ games, but the simplicity is the key to what makes this game fun to play. Really, all you are looking to do is unlock that free spins round and then aim to fill the reels with as many Wilds as possible. And of course, with a 3x multiplier applied to all wins, you have a really good chance of kicking on towards that top payout of 5,000x!
