How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

Push Gaming is well known for taking its time to create top-quality games and Razor Shark is no exception. This game comes with a variable RTP, with the standard being 96.7% and a simple 5 reel, 4 row set up, with 20 paylines. There are features abound in this slot, but the highlight is the Razor Reveal feature that reveals multiplier coins with a value of up to 2,500x your bet. The volatility is sky high on this slot and there’s theoretically the potential for a limitless max win, though the highest recorded so far has been around 85,000x the bet.

Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played Razor Shark

IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.

Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers

Test spins and results analysis by Mark Wadie.

Results from 300 spins with real money on Razor Shark at Casumo.

  • Stake Size: £0.1
  • Start balance: £974.58
  • End balance: £957.03
  • Hit Rate: 22.3% (67 winning spins in 300)
  • Biggest Win: 30x
  • Bonus Round: 0

This is a great slot game with superb artwork and a great atmosphere but it is very streaky. The win rate for the first 50 spins was easily 30% but then it slowed right down for the rest of the session, eventually coming in at 22.3%. That’s not bad, but like I say, be ready for some slower periods where you barely see any wins.

Stacked Wilds in Razor Shark
Stacked Wilds on reels 2 and 4

I kept going for 300 spins at 10p per play but never triggered that free spins round. The Mystery Stacks are fun, they appeared quite frequently, especially early on, and produced the best win of 30x thanks to stacked wilds on reels 2 and 4. The reveal is cool and knowing they keep nudging down until they drop off gives you hope you’ll get more out of them on each spin. Only twice did they reveal Gold Sharks, and then only producing small coin wins. You need some luck with those to really see what this game can do.

What We Liked

  • Huge max win of over 80,000x
  • Clever reveal feature via mystery stacks that nudge down with each spin
  • Beautifully produced game with slick graphics and animations

What We Didn't like

  • Very streaky pay distribution due to volatility
  • Low RTP at some sites

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"An awesome high volatility experience with a clever double reveal feature via those Mystery Stacks and Gold Sharks"

Overall Score: 8.6

Theme & Design

Our Score 8

Fans of the fish and fishing theme might get a bit of a surprise with this game. Push Gaming has taken an altogether deadlier approach with the graphics than you might be used to on something like Big Bass Bonanza.

In the base game you’re greeted with corals in bright blue water and a cute little clownfish. However, when you take a look at the reels it gets a whole lot scarier. Remember that famous quote from Finding Nemo, ‘fish are friends not food’? Well, the sharks on the reels don’t look much like they subscribe to that school of thought! Those guys are menacing. Things get darker still in the bonus round, where the sea turns to nighttime and the cute little clownfish is swapped out for iridescent jellyfish.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

The RTP on Razor Shark is set by default at 96.7% which is super generous, especially for a game that could deliver a theoretically infinite max win. However, there are two other RTPs 95.05% and 90.52% that UK players could encounter. So, be sure to check before you start playing. MrQ holds Razor Shark in its library and offers the highest RTP.

The volatility is sky high on this slot, so it’s maybe best avoided if you’re on a limited bankroll. Those chasing big jackpots with bankroll to burn will not be disappointed though.

Maximum Win

Our Score 10

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

With a theoretically infinite max win, it’s impossible to deduct any points here. So far, the highest recorded max win was 85,475x the bet which is a life changing amount of money. Sure, you’ll have to deal with sky-high volatility, but that’s to be expected. Plus, an RTP of 96.7% with a max win like this is incredibly generous.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

Razor Shark is played on 5 reels and 4 rows with a simple payline setup. There are 20 paylines in total, going from left to right, starting with the leftmost reel. You need to land at least 3 symbols to win.

Razor Shark Paytable
The paytable with 25x for 5 top paying paying premiums

There are 8 pay symbols, as well as a wild and a scatter. The low value symbols are the flippers, diving mask, and oxygen tube which pay from 0.1x your bet for 3, up to 2.5x your bet for 5. The premium symbols are the sharks, each in its own colour. These pay from 0.4x your bet for 3, up to 25x your bet for 5.

As well as being able to substitute for any pay symbol to make a win, the wild symbol (Great White shark) can also create wins on its own. If you land 5 of them then you win 50x the bet.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

Razor Shark knocks it out of the park when it comes to features. Often, the games with the highest max wins feel like they can afford to be a little lazy when it comes to features, but that is not the case here. Let’s get into them.

Wild Symbol

The great white shark is the wild symbol in this game. Not only can he substitute for any other pay symbol to complete wins, but he’s also a pay symbol in his own right too. Five of these symbols will net you a win of 50x your stake.

Scatter Symbol

The big yellow sea mine is the scatter and you’ll need at least 3 of them to begin the free spins round. You can also land scatters in the Razor Reveal round, but these work in a different way. They feature a +1 on them, signalling that they move the Mystery Stacks up a space, giving you an extra spin.

Mystery Stacks

The Mystery Stacks can land anywhere on a reel and are 4 seaweed symbols. Once the reels stop, the Mystery Stacks open to reveal what’s hiding behind the seaweed. You’ll either find any of the standard pay symbols, or Golden Shark symbols. If you land pay symbols then they’ll all be the same, helping you to make wins more easily. This is true even if there are multiple Mystery Stacks on the reels.

Razor Shark Mystery Stacks
Mystery Stack on reel 1

With normal pay symbols, once any wins have been paid out, the stacks move down one position on the reels and continue to do so until they’re no longer visible.  If the Mystery Stacks have instead revealed Golden Sharks then you’ve won the Razor Reveal feature.

Razor Reveal

Once you’ve revealed those Golden Shark symbols the Razor Reveal feature begins. The sharks turn into mini reels, that can award you either instant bet multipliers, or scatters. The bet multipliers have a value of anywhere from 1x to 2500x your bet and will be added together in the event of multiple before being applied to your win.

Razor Shark Gold Sharks
3 Gold Sharks on reel 1

If you land three or more scatters then you get the free games bonus. Any additional scatters will have a +1 on it, which pushes the Mystery Stacks up a position in the free spins round.

Free Spins

With three scatter symbols you’ll enter the free spins feature. You start with two Mystery Stacks that are always on reels 2 and 4. After a win, the stacks move down one position, unless you land a +1 scatter, in which case they’re nudged up a position. You remain in the free spins round until there’s no Mystery Stack anywhere on the grid.

To the right of the reels you’ll see a blue surfboard with a counter on it. This is the multiplier that’s applied to all wins in the free spins round. It starts at 1x your bet and increases by 1 every spin.

The Final Verdict

It’s hard not to sound fanatical about Razor Shark, because it is a slot game that pushes the limits. When Push Gaming released this slot, they believed it had a 50,000x max win, but it doesn’t! So far, it’s paid out a win of 85,475x the bet and it’s now thought the max win is theoretically infinite. If you’re a jackpot chaser, that’s the kind of statistic that can’t be ignored! Of course, the volatility is high, but it’s super unusual to find a game with an enormous max win and low volatility.

Better still, the default RTP is really solid at 96.7%, though do watch out as at some sites it can vary. The theme of the game is excellent too, with crisp graphics that deviate from the tried (and tired) fishing themes. The abundance of interesting mechanics, including the brilliant Mystery Stacks and Razor Reveal features, seal the deal. Razor Shark is a top quality slot that jackpot chasers will adore.

Useful Tips When Playing Razor Shark

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Look For Mystery Stacks

These are your ticket to the best features – they reveal either pay symbols or Golden Sharks which themselves can award scatters or multipliers.

2. Best Stuff Happens In Free Spins

You need to trigger that free spins round to unlock the best stuff in this game. You need THREE scatters to do this.

3. Play At Low Stakes

This is a notoriously high variance slot so it can burn through your balance fast. Choose a low stake – you can bet from 10p – to stretch your funds further.

4. Play At Our Recommended Slot Sites

We have chosen the sites on this page because they all scored high in our reviews and they are licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. That makes them fair and safe places to play slots.
