Reign of the Mountain King is the sequel to Rise of the Mountain King, a mystical slot inspired (unsually) by the music of Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg. Since the original, SG Digial (now Light and Wonder) have toned down the payout potential (from 50,000x to 10,000x) and the gameplay (which is much simpler this time) but this is still an epic slot by any standards. It has 10 paylines and 5 reels and its high variance and powerful re-spins feature with combining multipliers can produce blockbuster wins out of nowhere. It’s all about unlocking that re-spins feature in this game and I managed that 7 times over 200 spins (3.5%). Actually, for a high variance slot I think that’s not bad. It didn’t feel like I had to wait that long between each trigger and the game is entertaining enough in its own right to be able to ride out the quiet spells.

The re-spin feature itself felt very unpredictable.

The best result I got – shown above – was a 47.5x win from 3 re-spins where the multipliers on 4 wilds grew to 2x. On 2 occasions 3 of those multipliers combined to form an 8x multiplier which is how I got the bigger win. Another time I hit a 31.5x win from 2 re-spins. And on 3 other occasions I only had 1 re-spin each time and wins of just 2.5x or less. In other words … unpredictable!

Whilst none of these wins are dramatic, it’s easy to see how a good run in this feature, where the multipliers grow to 3x or even 5x, could produce stunning payouts. It’s just about getting lucky on the day.

A Truly Epic Production From Artwork To Soundtrack

The production in Reign of the Mountain King is superb. The setting is the castle of a Viking King, inside his banquet hall by the looks of things. The widescreen view shows stone pillars with flaming torches all gilded with gold whilst logs burn in iron fire pits. The inspiration for this game, and the original, is the music of Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg, and his epic piano pieces morph into metal versions in the re-spin feature for added atmosphere. It’s a stunning slot game and the audio, visuals and gameplay all make it a powerful piece of work by SG.

One (small) downside to note: fans of the original Rise of the Mountain King may feel a little short-changed going into this sequel as key stats are a reduction on what you saw in the first slot. In the case of RTP, this is at 96% which is down from 96.31%. I should say that 96% is still about average for an online slot and you won’t notice the 0.31% difference, though as they say, ‘it all counts’!

Meanwhile, the volatility is most definitely still high and will suit only those with a taste for risk. The minimum bet is just 10p (down from 30p) which makes the game a little easier on the balance and makes that volatility more manageable.

The biggest drop of all is in the payout potential of the game which has come down from a huge 50,000x to just 10,000x (still good, but modest in comparison to many high variance games these days).

The game plays on 5 reels with 3 rows displayed on each at all times. There are 10 paylines to win on, with wins being triggered by landing 3 or more identical symbols on any line from left to right.

The paytable has moderate value, but as we will find out there are some pretty significant multiplier values that come into play, as described below, to help boost those wins towards the 10,000x max.

The low payers are the cards, 9 through to Ace. These are valued at from 0.5x for 3 9s up to 5x for 5 Aces. The premiums are themed on the court and weapons of the Mountain King. You’ll find the King himself, along with the Queen, a gem-loving troll, a shield and an axe. These are valued at from 2x for 3 axes up to 20x for 5 Kings.

Interestingly, the King doubles up as the Wild. As well as substituting for other pay symbols to complete paylines he can also bring multipliers of up to 512x into play as described in the next section.

The features in Reign of the Mountain King have been stripped right back from what we saw in Rise of … and it makes for a much simpler playing experience with laser-focus on unlocking the best multipliers.

The Mountain King acts as the Wild. Thats all fine and good. The exciting part is that if he substitutes into a payline for a 4 of a kind or 5 of a kind win, then an additional multiplier MAY be applied to the win. That multiplier can be 5x, 8x, 64x or 521x.

Mountain King Respins And Gem Meter

The other big feature here is the Mountain King Re-Spins. These occur when 3 Wild symbols land on the middle 3 reels on the same spin.

Now, each wild gets a 1x multiplier and locks in place for a re-spin. Then, if any more wilds lands on reels 2, 3 and 4, they too get a multiplier and lock in place. A wild landing on reels 1 or 5 from the re-spin does NOT get a multiplier.

You will also notice a ‘Gem Meter’ that is visible above the reels. During re-spins, gems land on the reels and when they do they are collected in the meter. For every 3 gems that are collected, multipliers on the wilds in the middle reels increase to 2x, 3x, 5x and 8x.

These wilds may help form wins and when they do, their multipliers are applied to those wins. The best part is, where more than one multiplier is used in a win, then they are MULTIPLIED together. So, a 5x and a 5x would make a 25x. You can see how these can become very powerful when there are a few appearing in winlines.

The re-spins round only ends when no more gems or wilds drop, OR you hit that maximum 10,000x payout!

The Final Verdict

I think this is a fantastic slot with superb production and a fine-tuned re-spins / multiplier feature that will appeal to high variance slots fans everywhere. It may not have the same super-high max win as the original, or the same free spins round, but for me that doesn’t matter. The progressive multipliers and the gem collection meter are an exciting way to build blockbuster payouts as we got a glimpse of during our testing spins. And despite its volatility, there was rarely a dull moment. Combine all that with the epic soundtrack providing backing throughout, and awesome visuals, and this is a game to come back to again and again.
