How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

Reign of the Mountain King is the sequel to Rise of the Mountain King, a mystical slot set in a castle in the clouds and based on the music of Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg. The original was an awe-inspiring game with an epic setting up the in the clouds and an explosive range of features that could boost your wins as high as 50,000x.  This time SG have moved the setting and we see the Mountain King in his castle on terra firma and the atmosphere is a little less magical. The graphics retain the fantasy styling from ‘The Rise …’ slot and the game uses the classical Greig soundtrack again, but it only appears during the Respins feature, which is usually short-lived.

This slot, now available at most new slot sites, has a standard game setup with 5 reels and 3 rows of symbols along with 10 paylines. There are fewer features this time and the whole design is simpler with a top payout of 10,000x.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Overall, fans of the original Rise of the Mountain King may feel a little short-changed going into this sequel as across the board the stats are a reduction on what you saw in that high-risk masterpiece. The RTP is at 96% which is down from 96.31%. As already mentioned, the bigger drop is in the potential which has come down from a huge 50,000x to just 10,000x (still good, but modest in comparison to many high variance games these days). The top prize of 10,000x stake is achievable for those who manage to trigger the biggest Multipliers.

The volatility overall is most definitely still high and will suit only those with a taste for risk.  However, in terms of stakes the minimum bet is just 10p which makes the game a little easier on the balance. And it’s still better than the 30p minimum bet of Rise of the Mountain King though, which made the high volatility harder to deal with.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 7

The symbols in Reign of the Mountain King are themed on the court and weapons of the Mountain King. You’ll find the King himself, along with the Queen, a troll, shield and axe. There are high cards from 9 to A to award the lower payouts, while the premium icons are worth from 6 to 20x your bet for 5 matches on a paylines.

As you might imagine, the Mountain King pays the highest rewards with 20x stake available for 5 of a kind. This symbol is also Wild and can award Multipliers of up to 512x and trigger the Respin feature. There are no scatters as there is no free spins round in this slot.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 8

The features in Reign of the Mountain King have been stripped right back and it makes for a much simpler playing experience with laser-focus on unlocking the best multipliers.

King Wild Symbol

The Mountain King is the Wild Symbol, paying the highest rewards of 20x stake for 5 of a kind and having the power to trigger some special features. This symbol can substitute for all the other symbols in the game, creating more potential winning combinations. If the Wild helps towards a win with 4 or 5 of a kind, it will also be given a 5x, 8x, 64x or 521x Multiplier which applies to the payout.

Mountain King Respins

Landing 3 Wild symbols on the middle reels will trigger the Respins feature. Each Wild awards a 1x Multiplier and the Wilds also remain locked into place for the duration of the Respins round. New Wilds appearing on the reels will also lock into position wherever they land but only the Wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4 will award a Multiplier.

Gem Meter

During the Respins feature, precious gems can appear on the reels and you can collect these in the Multiplier Meter. Every time you collect 3 gems, you will trigger another level of Multiplier, going through the levels of 2x, 3x, 5x and 8x. This Multiplier is applied to all locked Wilds on the middle reels. If you use more than one Wild in a winning spin, the Multipliers are multiplied together to award potentially big payouts that close in on that 10,000x jackpot!

The Final Verdict

Our Score 7.0

Reign of the Mountain King by SG Digital will be immediately appealing to fans of the previous Rise of the Mountain King slot. The game is simpler this time around, featuring a smaller top payout of 10,000x stake instead of 50,000x stake and a marginally lower RTP.

The game lacks the bonus buy feature, the gamble game and the excellent Free Spins round, instead relying on Respins which make the bonus part of the game a lot shorter, which also means we get less time to enjoy the classical soundtrack! Fans of the musical side of slots may feel a little short-changed here as this is certainly an unusual backdrop to the most dramatic part of the gameplay. The best feature is the Multiplier potential from the Wilds which is at optimum level during the re-spins, especially with the potential to multiply a few of these together.

Overall, Reign of the Mountain King is a solid choice for fantasy fans, but it does miss a few features from the original and the reduction in top payout is a disappointment. SG Digital have managed to create a less impressive slot all in all, but it’s still worth a look if you’re interested in the Mountain King series.
