This is a jaunty and upbeat game. The action takes place on a floating reel set with a backdrop of a lush cartoon forest with the sheriff’s castle way off in the background. Treasure chests and stacks of gold coins are found alongside a pathway with gleaming stones. An archer’s practice target is hanging from a nearby tree. And all the time a medieval soundtrack with pipes and strings plays.

It all creates a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere and if you enjoy the legend of Robin and his friends, Friar Tuck and Maid Marion, both of whom make an appearance, then you’ll enjoy this.

Symbols and Paytable

Robin Hood’s Heroes is a pay ways game rather than a paylines game. That means you only need to land identical symbols on the adjacent reels – the position doesn’t matter. With splitting wilds included in the paytable where a wild may split into up to 5 wilds, this creates up to 10,000 pay ways on any spin.

Perhaps due to the high number of win ways, the paytable is quite disappointing.

The maximum win from premiums is just 5x for example. Before you get to that level there are low-paying hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs which pay between 0.1x and 0.5x. There are also the red barrel, a purple knife and Robin’s hat, which pay between 0.3x and 1.5x. And then the character symbols, Friar Tuck, Maid Marian and Robin Hood himself. These symbols can pay between 0.6x and 5x and come in stacks up to 3 high as well.

You also have Wilds to unlock more wins. They substitute for all other symbols to complete win lines. There are both standard and splitting wilds which we will explain more about in the gameplay below.

Features and Gameplay

With relatively low values from most symbols on the paytable, how does Robin Hood’s Heroes produce any decent wins? Well firstly, the Wild Split will help you. It’s the round W symbol on RED that lands only on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5. It will split into up to FIVE Wilds when it lands, creating more win ways. These are very handy, particularly when more than one drops simultaneously.

Wild Splits are great but what this game is really about is the Cash Collect and Cash Grab features. After playing a few rounds we soon figured out that what you are really looking for is the Money Symbols that land anywhere on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5. You’ll see the total number displayed for each spin in a counter on the left of the reels with targets and an arrow landing with a satisfying thump each time. Money Symbols come with a multiplier value related to your stake. A 2x Money Symbol on a £1 stake is therefore worth £2 for example.

The first use of these is the Cash Collect – when 3, 4 or 5 Money Symbols land then they are added together and paid out. Simple as that. This will ONLY happen in the base game.

The second use is the Cash Grab. This is more like a Money Train feature where collecting payouts is dependent on other symbols landing on the reels. But first you’ll need to land six or more Money Symbols simultaneously. This also ONLY happens in the base game. When it does you are awarded three re-spins to play out on a new grid where ONLY Money Symbols, and three heroes symbols – adders, doublers and collects – land. As long as at least one symbol lands on a spin, then the re-spins counter re-sets to 3 and you keep going.

Money symbols that triggered the Cash Grab remain where they were as the round starts. And now you are looking to land as many Adders, Doublers and Collectors as possible to drive up the value of the board before you run out of spins. These heroes ONLY become active once their counter has been filled which can happen multiple times in the feature. Each Adder that lands adds the value it displays to between 3 and 6 Money Symbols. Each Doubler will double the value or between 3 and 6 Money Symbols. And each Collector will collect together the sum of ALL other symbols and add them to its own value.

When the re-spins are done, the total multiplier values displayed across all symbols are added together and multiplied by your bet value to pay out.

Finally, you can also benefit from a free spins round which has a generous number of free plays.  3 or 4 Treasure Chest scatters triggers the round. When 3 scatter symbols land then between 7 and 15 spins are awarded. When 4 land, between 10 and 20 spins are awarded. This number can be increased by landing 2, 3, 4 or 5 scatters during the round to add 2, 4 or 7 spins. Annoyingly, the Cash Grab and Cash Collect features are NOT available in free spins. However, ALL wilds are splitters which does at least increase the win ways.

The Final Verdict

Carried along by its upbeat theme tune, bright green and yellow colors and cheerful characters, Robin Hood’s Heroes is a fun game with an interesting selection of features. In addition for a high variance game there was rarely a completely dry spell and wins seemed regular enough. You are helped of course by the win ways mechanic and the occasional flurry of wilds and wild splits. The stars of the show are the Cash Grab and Cash Collects both of which we managed to unlock once. The Cash Collect got very interesting and if you enjoy games like Money Train 3 then you will like this round, though we should add that Robin Hood’s Heroes doesn’t have the enormous potential of that slot (100,000x). It’s still exciting to watch the hero symbols land and a good combination of all three can deliver some very nice payouts.

Overall, high variance fanatics may find the 5,000x top win underwhelming but thanks to its high number of pay ways and regular wins, Robin Hood’s Heroes is still a compelling slots experience.
