Grim The Splitter Dream Drop

By Relax Gaming

Grim The Splitter Dream Drop is the 9th in the Dream Drop Progressive Jackpot series from Relax Gaming. It was released on 11th January 2023.  Other games in the Dream Drop series include Snake Arena, Templar Tumble 2 and Dream Drop Diamonds. The themes are varied but none as creepy as this where you are sat in front of a grim reaper style character who reveals cards in the way a normal slot spins it's reels. As well as looking for matches across paylines, you also look out for wilds that can split and clone a reel.

Alongside a top payout of 10,000x there are also FIVE JPs to play for including the multi-million pound Mega Dream Drop prize! Game on!

What Our Reviewer Says …

Another finely crafted progressive slot with a huge JP from a consistently excellent game provider!

What We Like

  • Up to 20 of a kind wins and 750x payouts
  • Superb £1,000,000 top JP prize
  • Innovative card-based reel set
  • High volatility for maximum excitement
  • Available at most UK slot sites

What We Didn't Like

  • Slow to pay out due to high volatilty
  • Less features than other DD JP slots

Theme and Design

The game is set in a darkened room where The Grim Splitter himself sits. He is a hooded, Grim Reaper-style skeletal character who sits behind a table bedecked with ominous skulls and knives. A standard reel set has been forsaken for rows of cards that turn at on the Splitter’s command.  The atmosphere is not strictly horror - there is a cartoon, ghost train kind of feel to it with creepy laughter, lots of cobwebs and melting candles to set the scene but no out-right fright-fests.

Overall, this slot is good-humoured and fun and plays on the theme of destiny which fits well with the idea of chasing down those huge JPs!

RTP and Variance

Grim The Splitter Dream Drop has an RTP of 94%. That is lower than average but take into account that a 12% contribution is being made to the JP on every spin.

Like many Relax Gaming games, this is also a high variance slot and that was reflected in our test session. It's a tough nut to crack and will produce some frustrating times before any big wins kick in.

Maximum Win

The top payout outside the progressive is 10,000x. This is standard for Dream Drop Jackpot slots. It's a good prize to aim for though it falls short of some of the much higher payouts you'll find on other Relax Gaming slots like Money Train 3 (100,000x) or Multiplier Odyssey (50,000x).

Symbols and Paytable

Once you sit yourself down across from the grim one, on his signal the cards will turn. They are laid out as 5 reels and 3 rows, and there are 25 active paylines.  You’lll need to hit 3 or more identical symbols across a payline from left to right to score you a win. But the reels can split as we shall see, which increases the size of the grid and the length of a payline, with the possibility of splitting 5 reels into 10, or even 20 in the free spins round!!

Symbol values are not huge BUT remember, the lines can stretch out as more and more reels get cloned. Here is how the paytable looks:

Low payers are the suits: clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades. The payouts here are from 0.4x for 3 on a line up to 120x for 20 on a line.

High payers are the scary looking bats, hawks, wild cats and hyenas. These pay from 1x for 3 on a line up to a huge 750x for 20 on a line.

Wilds land anywhere to sub in for others to complete wins AND split the reels.

Bonus symbols are needed to trigger the free spins round and DD symbols, 5 in all, will trigger the jackpot round where you are GUARANTEED a win on one of the five jackpots.

Features and Gameplay

Wilds and Splits

The base game hinges entirely on the Wild. Anyone who has played Nolimit City slots will know all about splitting cells, but few slots have been built entirely around that as a main concept.

Here, every time a wild symbol lands it splits the reel its on. The reel duplicates so you now have a cloned reel amongst the five. You can of course split more than one and in the base game have 10 reels in play. This makes for much bigger payouts – 10 of a kind!

Free Spins and Stored Splitters Create up to 20 Reels!

Now things get better still …

Land 3 bonus symbols (or more) and you’ll trigger the free spins round. Here you get 7 free spins and one more for every extra scatter above the three. During your spins you can earn another one for every scatter that lands, and split scatters get you TWO more free spins.

But that’s not all …

Every scatter that triggered the round, and those that land during the round, are stored above the reels. They are unlocked when a wild lands ... now you get the original split from the wild AND splits from the scatters stored above.

It’s splitting crazy! This way, no less that TWENTY symbols can be in play across the board, allowing lines of 20 identical symbols and those huge payouts of up to 750x!

The Main Event – Dream Drop Jackpot Feature

Once again, the format has been tweaked slightly. But the principle is the same.

You’ll need to land FIVE DD symbols across all five reels to trigger the jackpot round. It so simple – 15 cards are laid out face down. Each one will turn to reveal the name of one of the five JPs – Midi, Maxi, Major and Mega.

Players choose one card at a time and keep picking until three of the same type are revealed. When you reach this point, the relevant JP pays out.

Seeing of the JPs is as follows:

  • Rapid: £1
  • Midi: £5
  • Maxi: £100
  • Major: £25,000
  • Mega: £1,000,000 *

*The seed value for the Mega Jackpot started at £500,000. It increases by £500,000 after every second win. This will continue until it reaches a maximum of £10,000,000.

Final Verdict

The Grim Splitter is not an action-packed game so if you are a fan of super-complex high-risk slots like Nolimit City put out, this won’t be for you. All the action centres around those wilds and splitting reels. It makes for quite monotonous gameplay, particularly as the variance level is so high. You can find yourself on a very frustrating run of dry spins with no action at all before the wins kick in.

But that is what volatile gaming is all about. And with the potential to see multiple splits and up to 20 reels in the free spins round, it’s worth riding out those tough spells to unlock the more dramatic moments. A 20 reel spin and a win of a few hundreds x would be pretty special after all!

As for the progressive – this is a worthy edition to Relax’s excellent series and we hope to see that continue to grow over the next 12 months.

Good luck chasing down those Mega payouts!
