Thoro is a wild ride (literally). The win rate printed on the game sheet provided by ELK Studios shows 23.1%. But in this 100 spin test session a few weeks before release it was 30%. Maybe it will be tweaked down a bit before it goes live. Anyway, the game definitely flexed its muscles and it looks like it’s going to be superb. The best moments, aside from the free spins round, came via the Thoro Wild which dropped 6 times which is crazy. All hell breaks loose and a metal guitar riff plays out in true ELK style. On one occasion he picked up a hammer as he did his walk across the grid, triggering upgrades to the instant win payout table and an upgrade to his own multiplier. The win was only 3.5x but watching the phase play out was excellent.

The best win (38x) came from a free spins round shown in the screenshot. It’s the same game of course, but if you can start layering up the features – starting a Thoro Wild walking across the grid whilst upgrading the lightning payout table and earning extra re-spins via Loki for example – then its thrilling and the potential is huge. The production in this part is really fun and it feels like a game that will pop in a big way.

If you’re familiar with the other slots in the Toro series then you’ll know that they always feature the bull Toro and the matador trying to get in his way. This slot is no different, except Toro is now Thoro (inspired by the Norse God of thunder) and the matador is now Loki, God of mischief.

The slot is set in the clouds in the mysterious world of Asgard. It’s a long way from the bull ring but the capers of Thoro and Loki still feel familiar. The background itself is fluffy with dreamy pink clouds while the reels are hewn from stone in stark contrast. It’s a good looking slot, with a fun theme that brings a bit of life to a well-loved slot series.

Thoro has an RTP of 94%. This appears to be standard now for all ELK Studios online slots. Whilst it’s a little lower than games from other providers, it is fixed. So you won’t find this game running at a lower rate anywhere. Thoro is played on 6-reels with 5-rows each where to win, you must land 3 or more matching symbols on one of 178 paylines from left to right, starting from the leftmost reel.

There are 8 pay symbols in total.

The low-value symbols are four stones inscribed with runestones in blue, green, pink, and red, paying between 0.4x and 0.8x the bet for a 5-of-a-kind win. The premium symbols include thematic items like a horn, a roasted pig, a chalice, and a helmet, which offer between 0.9x and 5x the bet for five matching symbols on a payline.

The Wild Symbol plays a crucial role by substituting for all mentioned symbols to aid in forming payline wins, although it does not replace special symbols such as Thoro, Loki, Mjolnir, Lightning, or Bonus Symbols. We’ll come onto those in a second!

ELK Studios slots can be quite complex but they are entertaining. It’s worth getting to know the features before you start spinning – and there are many here – so here we have broken each one down for you.

Wild Symbol

The wild symbol substitutes for all of the regular pay symbols to complete paylines, but does NOT substitute for Thoro, Loki, Mjolnir or lightning symbols.

The Thoro wild symbol is a ‘walking wild’. He triggers a re-spin when he lands, moving one reel to the left as it plays. This continues until he walks off the grid altogether.

This is a powerful phase of the game because during the time that the Thoro wild is on the grid, any Lightning symbols are sticky. Landing 4 or more, as we will see, triggers an instant win of up to 10,000x.  Any wins (or Free Spin triggers) are only fulfilled when Thoro completes his walk.

Also …

If on Thoro’s walk, he comes across the blocker Mjolnir (a hammer), he will remove it (carry it) and trigger the Mjolnir Feature. This gives you another respin (unless the Thoro Thunder Stike is active – more on that shortly) during which Thoro can upgrade the lightning symbol paytable at random and also increase his own win multiplier.

This is a way to add a bunch of wilds onto the reels.

If both Thoro and Loki appear on the same spin then Thoro staggers across the reels knocking all Loki symbols off as he goes. Behind him you’ll find a trail of wild symbols. 

Lightning Symbols

Lightning symbols only land on reels 2, 3 and 4. They trigger instant wins. Their value is represented on the table to the left of the reels, starting at 2x for 4, and going right up to the max win value of 10,000x if 12 land at once.

Remember, if Thoro is carrying the Mjolnir hammer then lightning win amounts can be upgraded.

Loki Respin

Landing 2 or more Loki symbols also triggers a re-spin. All of the Loki symbols stick whilst the rest of the reels re-spin. And if you land another Loki symbol from your re-spin, then the process repeats.

Bifrost Bonus Free Spins

There is also a free spins round, triggered by landing 3 or more scatters – a lightning bolt with the word BONUS written across it. You can also land Super Scatters that trigger an enhanced free spins round where Thoro also comes with a multiplier.

The Final Verdict

This is an excellent slot showcasing ELK Studio’s talent for combining awesome production with fast-paced and compelling gameplay. The whacky combination of mischievous bull and Norse God of Thunder has real comedy value whilst the features are fantastic. And … not as complex as they first look. A few plays and you’ll have it nailed down. It’s all about landing those Thoro Wilds (hopefully with hammers) and Lokis and watching mayhem ensue.
