In Troll’s Gold Relax Gaming have produced a neat little game that invokes a fantasy-book world of little green monsters with a taste for gold living on a mountain top with rolling hills all around. Their home, which sits just behind the reels, looks like its carved into the rock just like the dragon carvings that sit atop the reel set itself. The green trolls are suitably ugly and appear to be a family or sorts, with the king troll at the top of the paytable, complete with crown.

Overall, the production of Troll’s Gold has a fun, almost Disney-like feel to it, completed by the plinky-cartoon soundtrack that plays along in the background.

Troll’s Gold has an RTP of 96.36% which is good for an online slot. However, like many Relax Gaming slots it has a high variance so you can expect the balance of wins to be uneven. Much of that RTP may be saved back for the bonus round. It’s advisable therefore to play with low stakes to avoid burning out too quick.

Look Out For Wilds With Combining Multipliers

Troll’s Gold has 5 reels and an unusual row set up as 3-4-5-4-3. There are 20 paylines in play all spins and there is some good value in the paytable.

Low payers are the card suits, diamonds, clubs, hearts and spades. These are valued at from 0.3x for 3 diamonds up to 2.5x for 5 spades. The premiums are the four trolls, valued at from 0.5x for 3 of the young troll up to 15x for 5 of the king trolls.

There are also wilds which land on reels 2 to 5 and substitute for pay symbols to complete paylines. They are powerful because they come with multipliers of up to 3x AND pay out 1x, 2x or 15x for 3, 4 or 5 on a payline. When 2 or more are involved in a win then their multipliers combine by multiplying together. So, 4 3x multipliers becomes an 81x multiplier (3x3x3x3).

Alongside the multiplier wilds, there are Lock In Re-Spins and Treasure Trove Re-Spins, both of which, experience shows, can go either way in producing wins.

Lock-In With Re Spins 

This is the only other feature in the base game besides the Wilds. It failed to appear over 200 spins in my test session though I have seen it a few times on other occasions.

To trigger this you need to land a stack of the same symbols on the 1^st reel. When that happens then that full stack plus any identical icons on all the other reels are held in place for a re spin. This process keeps repeating every time you spin and land more matching icons. When a re-spin occurs where no more matching symbols appear, then the action stops and all the wins are added up for a payout.

It is possible this way to fill the entire grid with one icon in this feature. If that happens then a random multiplier of up to 10x is applied to the total win as well. In short, it’s a powerful feature, though one that can be frustrating too.

Treasure Trove Re-Spin Bonus Game

The main event, which came up once during my 200 spins, is this one – Treasure Trove.

You need to land a full stack of gold coins on the first reel to unlock it. There is a nice animation at this point where the reel set moves down to an underground lair with stacks of gold coins lying around. Now, the low value cards are removed from the reels and the stack of gold coins that triggered the bonus, and any on other reels, are locked in.

Re-Spins ensue during which only Bags of Coins or Treasure Chests can land. When Bags of Coins land they display a multiplier of 1x, 2x, 3x , 5x or 10x. Meanwhile, the Treasure Chests aggregate all other icon values currently on the reels. The current value of your win from the bonus is displayed to the left of the reels.

Finally, there is another part to this game that opens things up nicely for much bigger wins. Whenever one of the Treasure Chests or Gold Coins Bags lands, it adds another count to the meter on the right of the reel set. There are SEVEN levels to the meter - 10x, 20x, 50x, 100x, 500x, 1,000x, 10,000x. You hit level one once 12 positions on the grid are filled with symbols. For every extra space filled, you move one rung further up for a bigger multiplier.

The round continues until either EVERY position on the reels is filled with a symbol OR there is a spin where NO symbols land. Then, the value on the meter to the right of the grid is added to that displayed to the left before the final pay out is made.
