About Our Slot Game Reviews
So, why read our slot game reviews?! Our team of expert writers have years of experience in the industry so we know what’s what when it comes to slot games. And whilst all these reel-based gambling machines may look the same, the truth is that they are all quite different. They have different themes, styles, maths models and payouts. So finding a game that suits your preferences is important if you want to get the most out of your gambling experience.
Here are a few of the important points we cover off in our slot game reviews:
Slot Game Developer
The game developer, or studio as we sometimes call them, is a key aspect of our review. There are hundreds of game developers out there creating new slots each year, from huge names like NetEnt and Microgaming, through to smaller studios like Thunderkick or Push Gaming. Each studio has its own style. For example, Big Time Gaming are renowned for high variance games and created their own Megaways™ engine with expanding reels, whilst Sweden’s Quickspin are notable for creating slots with a unique illustrative style. By reading our reviews you can search out studios whose style you particularly like.
Themes, Sights and Sounds
Video slots come in all shapes and sizes and they each have a theme or narrative that they follow. There are many different themes, from movies and music to Ancient History, Science Fiction, Travel, Animals, Steam Punk, Space Travel, and pretty much anything else you can think of. Fans of Marvel comics can play Batman or Hulk games, those who like vampires can enjoy Immortal Romance or Bloodsuckers, fans of adventures can play Book of Dead …. you get the picture! You can see what theme a game has by its name and the images, but our reviews delve into more detail and tell you how the theme interacts with the gameplay and features and how each slot compares with others in its genre.
Slot Maths Models
Arguably the most important aspect of any slot game is the maths model that powers it. This defines how often and how much it will pay out and can be broken down into Return to Player (RTP) and Variance (or Volatility).
RTP is the average amount a slot machine will pay as a percentage of all the money wagered, and variance is how far from this figure a game will deviate during a session. High variance games will drift hugely from the advertised RTP, creating very uneven distributions of payouts and rollercoaster gambling sessions. Typically, you may find yourself on the wrong end of a long losing streak that can drain you bankroll. But the payoff of course is that eventually you will score some wins, and when they come, they arrive in a short, high value burst. Alternatively, low risk slots simply offer slower paced gameplay with regular, smallers wins on an even distribution.
Whether your preference is for low variance or high variance play depends on your attitude to risk. High variance games are high risk but come with big win potential, but they are not for everyone and should be treated with care. If you do choose to chase those big prizes then do so responsibly and with an eye on your balance.
You can find out all about risk levels in our guide to slots variance and find out the volatility level of each game in our reviews.
Top Payouts
Aside from the maths models of these games you will also want to know how much each game can pay out. Most games will have an advertised top prize published as a multiple of your stake. Typically, low variance games will have a top payout of 500x to 1,000x. High variance games often have much bigger potential, as high as 150,000x in some cases.
Keep in mind that the odds of triggering that top payout are usually very, very low. Sometimes as low as that of winning the lottery. So, don’t expect to unlock that prize when you play. It does however give an indication of the kind of prize levels you might be able to hit in a session. And of course, with high risk games before you get that big payoff you will probably experience a long frustrating run of dry spins with no wins at all! Patience is key in those circumstances!
Slots Bonus Features
Our writers break down the bonus features in each game that we review. There are many ways in which a game developer can use events in the gameplay to trigger prizes and some are more compelling than others. Some of the best wins come when multiple features combine in one instance to boost the prize beyond the normal paytable levels. Here are some of the most common features to look out for:
Wilds – special symbols that substitute for any other to create a winline.
Multipliers – these are applied to wins – e.g. a 10x multiplier applied to a £1 win creates a £10 win. Multipliers appear on symbols or in displays to the side of the main game. Often they will increase in response to events on the reels like consecutive wins.
Expanding Symbols – symbols that land then expand up or down to fill an entire reel and create more chances of winning.
Free Spins – these are earned, usually by landing special scatters symbols on the reels. Free spins play out hands free and often come with enhanced paytables or additional features. They are a mainstay of high variance slots and trigger some of the best epic win sequences.
These are just a few of the game features used by developers to enhance the base game experience. All our game reviews tell you about the features to look out for in each slot and how they work to boost your wins.
Our Verdict
Once we have taken you through all aspects of a game, from developer and maths model through to features and gameplay, our writers will give you their verdict on the slot, including a score out of 10. Of course, this is all subjective, but we like to think we know a good slot when we see one!
