How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

Big Bass Splash, from June 2022, is the fifth in the popular Big Bass fishing slot series from Pragmatic Play. The action moves to a quarry lake but the gameplay is familiar. It’s all about unlocking the free spins round where landing fisherman wilds collect the value of all fish symbols on the reels. There are fun features like Hooks, Bazookas and Explosions that add extra fish and fishermen to the reels, and a multiplier of up to 10x that grows with every 4 wilds that land. The top payout is 5,000x and spins start at 20p.

A Spot of Quarry Fishing With Your Bearded Fisherman Friend

We’re in familiar ground for Big Bass Splash, though the venue for the expedition has moved to a quarry lake. A good destination for hooking bass. Your friendly bearded fisherman is driving a big 4 wheeler this time, the highest paying symbol. But once you start spinning, things look very much the same with 5 reels submerged in profile, air bubbles floating to the surface and fishing swimming by. And that jaunty tune to keep you company. In short, fans of the Big Bass series will be right at home here.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Big Bass Splash comes with 3 RTP rates – standard for Pragmatic Play slots – which are 96.71%, 95.67% and 94.6%. To give yourself the best chance of returning with a positive balance look for casinos where the game runs at the highest available rate which in this case is a very strong 96.71%. My recommendation is MrQ from Lindar Media which we regularly use for testing as it offers games at the maximum RTP.

To check the RTP for yourself in the game, hit the ‘I’ button under the reels and scroll through the info screens until you see Return to Player.

Like the other Big Bass games, this is also a high variance slot so expect it to be volatile with an uneven win distribution. It can go off at any time but may also be something of a grind!

Maximum Win

Our Score 8

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The max payout in Splash is 5,000x. At the time of release that was the highest for a Big Bass game. Since then, there have been Day at the Races, Amazon Xtreme and Hold and Spinner, all of which can produce wins of up to 10,000x. If you want more high paying games then check out our list of Pragmatic Play’s highest max win slots.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

Big Bass Splash uses a 5 reel and 3 row set up with 10 paylines to win on. Wins are triggered by landing 3 or more identical symbols on a payline from left to right, starting at the left most reel.

Big Bass Splash Paytable
The paytable with 100x for 5 truck symbols

Pay symbols come in 10 values. The low payers are the cards, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. These are valued at from 0.2x for 3 10s up to 10x for 5 Aces. The premium symbols are the bass, the tackle box, the mayfly, the rod and reel and the truck. These are valued at from 1x for 3 bass up to 200x for 5 trucks.

There is a Wild as well – the fisherman with his catch – which only pops up in the free spins round. He will substitute for all pay symbols to complete paylines. But it has NO pay value.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

This game really is all about the Free Spins round. Before that point, it’s like a day’s fishing – lots of waiting around for that big moment when you can start hauling in your catch.

To unlock free spins you need 3 or more scatter symbols to drop. These are represented by the bass fish on a line. This gets you free spins as follow:

  • 3 scatters – 10 free spins
  • 4 scatters – 15 free spins
  • 5 scatters – 20 free spins

Turning 2 Scatters Into 3 Or More

It’s a trick used in most of the Big Bass games that if you land 2 scatters but not the third then a special event MAY trigger to drop more scatters onto the reels. In this case, those events are as follows:

If there is room for your 2 scatters to move one row down on their reels without dropping off the bottom, then they do this before a re-spin is triggered on the other reels. This continues until more scatters land OR your existing ones disappear from the bottom of the reels.

Alternatively, a hook may randomly appear and pull one reel upwards to reveal an extra scatter.

How Does The Round Work?

The free spins round has several elements.

On a basic level, the objective is to land fishermen wilds at the same time as fish symbols. The fish symbols carry prize values of 2x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 200x, 500x, 1,666x, 2,500x or 5,000x. The fishermen wilds collect ALL visible prize values when they land.

In addition, your wilds are collected during the round. Every 4th one will add 10 more spins to your total and grow a progressive multiplier to 2x, 3x then 10x! Once you’ve collected 12 wilds, the round can’t extend any further.

As with other Big Bass games, during free spins the game can randomly help you out if a spin produces no win.

Dynamite – When fisherman wilds land but no fish, explosions cause fish to appear in random positions on the reels.

Bazooka – Again, when fisherman wilds land but no fish, a bazooka can fire off, causing ALL symbols except the fisherman wilds to turn into a different symbol

Hook – When fish land but no fisherman wilds, a hook can appear to pull reels up and bring fisherman wilds onto the reels.

Random Modifiers Added To The Game

Finally, before the free spins round starts, up to FIVE modifiers are randomly chosen to be active during your free spins. They are:

More Fish – more fish carrying prizes are available on the reels

More Fishermen – more of the wild symbols are available on the reels

More Dynamite, Hooks and Bazookas – more chance of landing these features

Start At Level 2 – the round starts from the 2nd level of the progressive feature

+2 Spins – you start with an extra 2 spins and every re-trigger has 2 more spins than standard

And that’s your lot!

The Final Verdict

The fifth game in the Big Bass series saw Pragmatic Play move things up a level with the highest max win to that point and what feels like a more volatile game engine. This slot is all about free spins – the rest of the time is just waiting. Once you are there, a treasure trove of features and progressive chances awaits you, and for those on a lucky run this game can really deliver.

Useful Tips When Playing Big Bass Splash

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Play At A Low Stake Level

This is a high variance slot and it can burn your funds fast. To avoid quick defeat, use good bankroll management by setting a low stake relative to your balance.

2. Look Out For Random Hooks, Bazookas and Dynamite

One of the best parts about Big Bass games is that they give second chances when you only land 2 scatters in the base game, or you land fish but no fishermen in the free spins round. Look out for those modifiers that turn losing spins on their head!

3. Find A Site Where The Game Runs At Max RTP

With 3 RTP rates to choose from some operators will try to improve their edge by picking the lowest rates. Make sure you check the RTP in the game before you spend cash and don’t settle for less than 96.71%.

4. Play At Recommended UK Slot Sites

We have chosen the sites on this page because they are licensed in the UK and offer fair, safe and secure gambling. They also run generous bonus offers with fair and transparent terms.
