Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe

IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.

Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers

It seems inevitable that the big bass fisherman would end up in Vegas eventually. It sounds like a terrible idea on paper but in fact – although I don’t recall seeing any bass lakes on the strip – it works well partly thanks to a big slice of humour including Elvis-style voice overs from the fisherman.

Big Bass Vegas Free Spins Round
Free spins round in testing

The setting has changed but the maths most definitely hasn’t. The win rate is as low as ever – 10.8% on my 250 spins. And it’s still ALL about that free spins round. It took me 218 spins to get there by which time I burned 150 credits off the balance. If you get on a lucky run and collect enough wilds to keep extending the round, as any big bass fan knows it can go off. Not on this occasion though as my win maxed out at 67.7x.

Take aways? The game mechanics are almost too familiar now, but the quality of production here actually carries this version and it’s worth a spin just to check out your hero’s Elvis impersonation.

What We Liked

  • Iconic fishing slot returns once more
  • Up to 10x multipliers in free spins round
  • Collecting wilds extends the free spins round
  • Use Ante Bet to increase your odds of unlocking free spins
  • High values at top end of pay table

What We Didn't like

  • Different setting but same-old game format
  • Lower max win than many other versions of Big Bass

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"This slot exceeded expectations mainly thanks to the fun production that breathes life into the series!"

Overall Score: 6.8

Theme & Design

Our Score 7

Maybe it’s just me, but if I was heading out on a fishing trip then Vegas probably wouldn’t be my first choice. However, having played this slot, I might be willing to change my mind. The design is distinctly different to the rest of the Big Bass series. Sure, the mechanics are much the same and the idea of fishing for cash remains, but the whole thing has been given a full Vegas makeover.

Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe by Pragmatic Play
Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe Game Screen

You can see the skyline of Vegas in the background, illuminated by neon pink lights. The reels are the underwater part of the game, boasting bubble streams and newly glamorous symbols. Sure, it’s not a totally new idea, but if you like this series anyway, then it provides enough of a change to feel interesting.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 7

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe has a high volatility and a default RTP of 96.50% which isn’t bad, though notably not the best in the Big Bass series. You’ll find several slots with a slightly higher RTP of 96.71% including the original Big Bass Bonanza and Bigger Bass Bonanza.

You should note that like many Pragmatic Play games casino operators do have the option to change the RTP to either 95.50% or 94.50%. You’ll be able to find this information on your chosen casino so make sure you’re playing at the default RTP for the best chance of positive return on your wagering.

NOTE: In our research, MrQ from Lindar Media consistently runs Pragmatic Play slots at the highest RTP rates, making it a good place to play this slot.

Maximum Win

Our Score 5

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The top payout of 5,000x the bet is fine and it’s in line with many other Big Bass games. But if you want to aim higher you could try Big Bass Hold & Spinner Megaways with a top payout of 20,000x the bet. It’s also worth noting that there are numerous other fishing slots that offer more generous max wins if you’re looking to hit a big one.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe has a 5-reel, 3-row layout with 10 paylines. Winning combinations are formed by landing three or more identical symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel.

Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe Paytable
The paytable with 200x for 5 top paying premiums

The game has 10 pay symbols, as well as two wild symbols and a scatter. The lower-paying symbols are the playing cards 10, J, Q, K, and A. Landing five of the same type results in a payout of 5 to 10 times the bet. The higher-paying symbols are themed around fishing and include a fish, a tackle box, a fishing rod, a flamingo, and a pink motorboat. A line of five matching high-paying symbols awards between 20 and 200 times the bet.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 7

Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe introduces two wild fishermen into the mix as well as a blue and red trail for them each to fill. Let’s take a look at how it all works in detail.

Wild Symbol Collect Cash In Bonus Game

There are two wild symbols in this game, a blue and a red fisherman. They can substitute for any normal symbols to make wins. They also collect the value of all fish symbols in view but only in the bonus game.

Money Symbols Worth Up To 5,000x

Money symbols (fish) can only be activated during the bonus game and have values from 2x up to 5,000x the bet. In order to collect a money symbol you must have at least one wild (fisherman) on the reels at the same time.

Free Spins With Cash Collects AND Multipliers

If you land three or more scatter symbols during the base game then the free spins round begins. You’ll start with either 15, 20, or 25 free spins depending on whether you land 3, 4, or 5 scatters.

Big Bass Vegas Free Spins Round
Triggering the free spins round

As well as collecting money symbols, the fishermen also have another function. Every fisherman you collect is counted into the blue or red trail above or below the reels. Every fourth fisherman extends the free spins feature with 10 extra free spins, plus the following bonuses:

  • 4 Fishermen: 10 additional free spins and 2x multiplier for all collected Fish Symbols.
  • 8 Fishermen: 10 additional free spins and 3x multiplier for all collected Fish Symbols.
  • 12 Fishermen: 10 additional free spins and 10x multiplier for all collected Fish Symbols.

Once you hit 12 fishermen you no longer get any additional bonuses.

Big Bass Vegas Bazooka Feature
Bazooka animation changes the reels during free spins

If a fisherman lands on the reels and there are no money symbols to collect then as a helping hand one of the following can happen:

  • Money symbols randomly appear after the spin ends
  • A bazooka appears and randomly changes ALL symbols EXCEPT money ones into other symbols

And if there are money symbols remaining at the end of the round but no fishermen then a hook MAY BE sent down to bring a fisherman onto the grid.

Ante Bet To Increase Your Chances Of Hitting The Bonus Round

Finally, for an additional 50% of your stake you can activate the ante bet. This gives you a greater chance of triggering the bonus game.

The Final Verdict

Will Pragmatic Play surpass 20 games in the Big Bass series? At this stage it’s seeming likely, but the question really ought to be, do they need to? While Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe does feel different to the other games in the series with its glitzy Vegas makeover and dose of humour, the mechanics remain largely unchanged. Sure, there are two wild fishermen now, but that doesn’t seem to actually increase the hit rate.

There will always be fans of the Big Bass series who will play the next slot regardless of how it stacks up against the last. However, for us, this slot just doesn’t offer enough of a tangible difference to be rated anything better than ‘ok’. The max win of 5,000x is fine, so is the default RTP. Overall, it’s a fair addition, but it does feel a little like just another cog in the huge Big Bass machine.

Useful Tips When Playing Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Look Out For The Leaping Fish Scatter

This is your ticket to the bonus round where all good things happen. You need at least THREE on one spin.

2. Land Wilds AND Fish At The Same Time

This triggers a collection of fish cash values during the bonus round.

3. Check The RTP Before You Spend Your Money

Be sure your slot site is running the game at the max RTP rate before you spin for real cash. Some sites run the game at under 96%.
