Boo
By Big Time Gaming
Boo by Big Time Gaming is a Halloween win ways slot with 4 reels and 4 rows. Wild symbols carry multipliers of up to 4x and reactions follow every win, bringing more premium and wild symbols into play each time. The highlight is the free spins round where EVERY position on the grid carries a persistent multiplier and each winning spin adds value to them at random. A lucky run could grow those multipliers to high numbers and take you close to a 47,050x max win. Spins start at 10p.

Theme and Design
Ever wished that Big Time Gaming’s popular Pop slot could be just a little spookier? Well you’re in luck. Boo has taken that one and given it a ghastly makeover. It is set in a haunted graveyard, shrouded in grey mist and filled with creaking trees and dimly lit by a creepy mansion. It’s classic Frankenstein-style spooky, one that will appeal to the old school horror fans.
The symbols are now slightly menacing little ghosts, in different colours, and a couple of pumpkins flank the reels to each side. It’s not the most unique theme, but it’s nicely done and perfect for a spooky-season revamp of a popular slot.
RTP and Variance
Boo has a default RTP of 96.54% which is very good. However, there is also an alternative RTP of 94% and some slot sites will choose to run the game at that level. You can check for yourself which setting you are playing at by browsing the game rules pages via the little hamburger icon next to the reels.
A good option to play this game is MrQ from Lindar Media. They always run slots at the optimum RTP rate.
No question this is a very volatile game from a slot provider renowned for pushing the variance to the limits. So, expect an uneven win distribution and the chance of some extended dry runs. And if you’re looking for a spooky game with a slightly friendlier volatility then try out Fear the Dark by Hacksaw Gaming. It boasts a similar RTP but only medium volatility.
Maximum Win
The top payout in Boo is a whopping 47,050x. BTG have produced games with bigger potential but it’s still a very good max win and a suitable top prize for a game as volatile as this one. Interesting to note though that Pop, which shares many similarities, has higher top payout of 66.960x.
Symbols and Paytable
This is a win ways game, played on 4 reels and 4 rows. That means wins are formed by landing 3 or more matching symbols on adjacent reels (regardless of their row position) from left to right, starting from the leftmost reel.
That gives you 256 win ways per spin (4x4x4x4).
Symbols are not great. However, there are plenty of win ways, plus a whole array of powerful multipliers to help boost those payouts as we shall see.
The paytable includes 10 symbols in total, plus a wild and a scatter. The low-value symbols are 9, 10, J, Q, K, and A. Landing 4 of these symbols on adjacent reels pays out between 0.2x and 0.4x the bet. The premium symbols feature a variety of ghosts in green, blue, red, and purple. For these, landing 4 on adjacent reels pays between 0.8x and 2x the bet.
The game’s Wild Symbol, a multi-colored ghost, appears only on reels 2, 3, and 4 and can include multiplier values of up to 4x. The Scatter Symbol, represented by a scary pumpkin, triggers the Bonus Game when 3 or more land across the reels.
Features and Gameplay
Boo has pretty simply gameplay with just multipliers wilds in the base game. However, a multiplier-fest in the free spins round has the potential to really crank up the payouts.
Reactions / Cascades After Each Win
Many studios call them cascades. BTG choose to call them reactions.
Whatever, it's the same deal. After every win, winning symbols are removed from the grid. Remaining symbols drop down to fill any spaces, before new ones drop in from above to complete the grid. In a nice twist, the new ones that drop in will always be ghosts, wilds or scatters (not low value symbols).
If they create more winning combinations then the reactions keeps happening until no new wins are made.
Wilds With Up To 4x Multipliers
The wild is shown as a multi-colored ghost. He can substitute for any symbol except the scatter to help you to complete win ways.
Wilds can only appear on reels 2, 3, and 4 but they MAY land with a multiplier of up to 4x to be applied to any win they are part of.
Free Spins With Persistent, Progressive Multipliers
That's the base game. Simple, but things heat up considerably in the free spins round. This is triggered by landing 3 or more scatters (the halloween pumpkin). That gets you 12 spins.
The fun part is, now EVERY position on the grid has its own multiplier which persists throughout the round. And every time a winning combination that features a premium or a wild symbol is made (only on spins, not reactions) one or more of the winning positions will have their multiplier increased by 1, 2 or 3.
NOTE: The positions on the grid where triggering scatters landed for the free spins round start with multipliers of 2x, 3x or 4x rather than 1x.
These multipliers are applied ONLY to the ghost symbols or the wilds in any win.
Finally, by landing 3 more scatters during the round you extend the round by 3 spins and increase the multiplier on each scatter position by 1x, 2x or 3x.
Final Verdict
Hitting recycle on a popular game might sound like an easy way out, but Big Time Gaming has done a great job of this one, taking Pop and turning it into Boo, with just the right blend of spooky and cutesy! But don’t let that light-hearted side fool you, this is a wickedly powerful slot game. BTG have thrown everything into reactions and multipliers, two of their favourite tools, and the result is a game that can produce sudden bursts of high value wins out of nowhere. As ever the best stuff will happen in free spins and it’s not hard to imagine a run of consecutive wins and reactions turning small multipliers into much bigger ones for a huge windfall.
Testing Notes
Test spins and results analysis by Mark Wadie.
Results from 100 spins on Boo on Big Time Gaming’s test servers.
- Stake Size: 1
- Start balance: 1,000
- End balance: 992
- Hit Rate: 26% (26 winning spins in 100)
- Biggest Win: 8.2x
- Free Spins Round: 0
This is a fun, fast-paced game. It gave me a win rate of 26%, or 26 winning spins in 100, which isn’t bad at all for a volatile slot. It was quite streaky as expected, but it rarely stood still for long. It’s quite hard to pick up any decent sized wins in the base game because pay symbol values are so low (max of 2x from 4 premiums). However, keep in mind that after each reaction, ONLY premium ghosts can fill the empty spaces vacated by winning symbols, so if you can string a run of 3 or 4 reactions together, you can start to fill up the grid entirely with ghosts. I only got to an 8.2x, but I could see potential to get much more, even on a base game spin.
There were a few glitches in the gameplay – this was in test before the game goes live in late September 2024 – so I quit after 100 spins. Otherwise I would have kept going to see how the free spins round looks. But I’ll definitely be chasing those when Boo appears in casinos.
