I extended this test to 300 spins to see if I could unlock that elusive free spins round but still had no joy! On 11 occasions I landed 2 Wilds but the 3^rd didn’t drop for me. It shows you how tough this game can be. However, with high value in the paytable I still picked off a few decent wins in the base game, including a 25x featuring 2 Wilds which you can see in the screenshot below. For the record, most high variance slots will trigger their bonus round at least once in 200 to 300 spins, so this was a particularly rough day!

Quickspin Bring Their Own Style To The ‘Book of’ Format

The back story to Book of Duat is not clear but it does follow the traditional Egyptian explorer route, this time with the aptly named, ‘Anna the Explorer’, who is immersed in an exotic adventure set in a warren of Egyptian caves. The artwork is classic Quickspin, with shades of orange predominant and stylish, high-quality illustration throughout.

Some of the characters on the paytable are particularly interesting, including the animal-pharaohs that feature Anubis and a crocodile! The reel spins are slick and the low-key Egyptian soundtrack is pleasantly unintrusive but adds extra style. Overall, a very good production.

Book of Duat has three RTP settings according to the Quickspin website. I have seen it running at 94.19% at most sites though reputedly you can find it at 96.27% as well, though I’ve never seen this myself. There is also a 90% RTP setting. So, my advice would be to make sure you check before you play to be sure you are playing at 94.19% or higher. You can do this by hitting the ‘?’ button on the game info screen before you start.

In the tradition of ‘Book of’ slots this is also a high variance game, so much of that RTP is likely to be held back for the free spins round where a ton of multipliers and expanding symbols can produce stunning results.

The layout of Book of Duat is standard to ‘Book of’ slots too. That is 5 reels and 3 rows with 10 paylines. Unlike Play n Go’s model, in Quickspin’s version you cannot reduce the number of paylines. They are fixed at 10 with a bet level that starts at 20p per spin.

It was good to see when testing this slot for our review that Quickspin have not just followed the traditional game model from slots like Book of Ra or Book of Dead. They have kept the expander feature that appears in all ‘Book of’ games but they have added in a Pick and Click game in which extra expanders and multipliers may be awarded.

Firstly, landing 3 or more Wilds ANYWHERE on the reels gets you 4 spins. For 3, 4 or 5 Wilds you get 3, 6 or 12 picks from the board. Before the Pick and Click round begins you are awarded one expanding symbol for the round.

The Pick and Click round is a board of 5×4 filled with golden tiles. Those 20 tiles hide the following awards:

The Final Verdict

I love the potential of this game even though it left me for dead in testing. It’s a genuine upgrade on the standard Book of format that has been done over and over. Quickspin have kept the theme on track whilst production is in their own unique style. Meanwhile, the Pick and Click feature and the super-high max win both mean that there are very good reasons to choose Book of Duat over classics like Book of Dead or Book of Ra. Anyone familiar with high variance slots can see that this game has potential to pack a massive punch in that bonus round thanks to the extra expanders and those multipliers which max out at 5x. Add to that the high values in the paytable and you have a real blockbuster on your hands. The caveat here is that you start with just 4 free spins – most Book of … games will hit you with 10 to start, so you have some catching up to do even to be on level terms. However, the Pick and Click gives you the opportunity to put that right early on of course and you can pick up plenty more by landing wilds during your free spins.

So, to sum up, this is a top-class high variance game with huge potential and lots of thrills, and one ‘Book of’ fans will love.
