Theme and Design
Nicely Crafted Fantasy-World Slot With Quality Illustrations and Animations
Dragon’s Dawn is a full-on Dungeons and Dragons fantasy trip in an alternative world populated by fire-breathing dragons and wizards wielding long staffs. The backdrop is an intricately drawn landscape with a towering castle, rocky mountains and rivers. A flying dragon hovers to the right of the grid. The atmosphere is not scary though, but rather peaceful with a nice piano track giving off a kind of relaxing spa-vibe! If you are into fantasy-style movies and books this could be a good slot for you.
RTP and Variance
There are two RTP settings available for Dragon’s Dawn – 94% or 96%. There is not much between those but I always advise that you find a slot site which runs at the higher of the two RTPs if possible. Usually Casumo, or White Hat Gaming sites like Barz Casino, are a good option as they will run Stakelogic slots at the optimum RTP.
It’s also a high variance game so it will be volatile with some tough runs but also the chance to really kick out some big wins where powerful free spins, cascades and multiplier features combine.
Maximum Win
The top payout in Dragon’s Dawn is 7,500x which is OK but nothing too special. If you are looking for a Scatter Pays slot with a higher max win, try our ‘best of’ list which includes Money Train 4 (150,000x) or Sweet Bonanza (21,100x).
Symbols and Paytable
The exciting part about Scatter Pays slots of course is that you can build wins with lots more symbols than you do in most pay line games, which gives you bigger payouts. And that is reflected in the paytable in Dragon’s Dawn. In this case, 8 or more identical symbols need to land ANYWHERE on the reels to trigger a payout.
There are 12 symbols in all.
The low payers are the cards, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. These are valued at from 0.2x for 8 Jacks up to 8x for between 12 and 36 Aces. The mid-range symbols are the gems in green, blue, purple and red. These are valued at from 0.8x for 8 greens up to 20x for 12 to 36 reds. The premiums are the dragons in green, blue, purple and red. These are valued at from 3x for 8 greens up to 200x for 12 to 36 reds.
There is also a Wild, represented by the letter W, that substitutes for all pay symbols to complete scatter wins.
Features and Gameplay
Dragon’s Dawn comes with some interesting extra features to boost your wins. They work as follows.
Cascading Wins With Progressive Multiplier
This feature is commonly found in scatter pays and cluster pays slots. After each win, winning symbols are removed from the grid and new ones drop in to replace them. If more wins are created, the process repeats. This goes on until no more wins occur.
In this case, the cascading wins feature comes with a progressive multiplier. This is unusual in the base game and a strength of this game. The multiplier starts at 1x and increases by 1x with each successive cascade. It is then applied to the total win from the sequence. It re-sets to 1x when the cascades end and a new spin round starts.
Three Reel Modifiers To Increase Chances of Wins
These modifiers can be triggered in both base game and bonus round. They change the symbols on one or more reels so that a non-winning spin can become a winning one.
- Lightning Strike – lightning strikes between 1 and 6 reels, turning all symbols on those reels into the same symbol. Clearly very powerful, and capable of turning the entire grid into the same symbol!
- Meteor Shower – meteors land on the grid and change between 3 and 10 symbol types into Wilds.
- Portal – when this triggers then a portal appears, displaying one pay symbol. This symbol will drop onto a random number of positions on the grid.
Free Spins With Persistent Progressive Multipliers
There is a free spins round too, triggered by landing 4 or more bonus symbols. These get you 8, 12 or 15 free spins when 4, 5 or 6 bonus symbols land.
The game rules are the same in this free spins feature with one difference. Now, your progressive multiplier does NOT re-set between spins but instead just keeps growing.
This round can also be re-triggered in the same way it was first triggered. So, landing more bonus symbols can earn you more free spins with a bigger and bigger progressive multiplier.
Final Verdict
This is a very typical high volatility scatter pays slot that will probably be a very frustrating play for much of the time. But it definitely has huge potential for those with the patience and balance to take it on. The gameplay isn’t too original – we all know cascading wins and multipliers so well by now – but the fantasy world atmosphere is captivating and the 3 reel modifiers, though rare, can dish out some nice treats whilst waiting for free spins to drop. My advice is, play at a low stake and dig in for the long haul if you decide to give Dragon’s Dawn a go.
Testing Notes
I played 250 spins on Dragon’s Dawn on Stakelogic’s test server prior to release to test the game. This is what happened.
- Stake Size: £1
- Start balance: £5,000
- End balance: £4,986.27
- Hit Rate: 15.1% (38 winning spins in 250)
- Biggest Win: 40x
- Free Spins Round: 1
Dragon’s Dawn has the feel of a very volatile game. Over 250 spins it triggered wins just 28 times which is a hit rate of 15.1%. It would need more testing to see if that hit rate persists, as the sample size is very small, but it is not unheard of for high variance games to run like this. I experienced 10 or 12 dead spins in a row several times during the session.
Also, the 3 reel modifiers were a rarity. The lightning never appeared, and the portal and meteor only showed up once each (i.e. less than 1% of spins triggered modifiers). So don’t expect a feature-packed experience.
That doesn’t make this a bad game, but one where the RTP is skewed towards big wins on single spins or free spins features. In other words, classic high variance. Indeed, the best win I got was a 40x from a 3x multiplier in the base game from 2 consecutive cascades.
The free spins round did trigger once, producing a win of just 29x thanks to a 7x multiplier. It’s easier to build multipliers in the free spins round because they don’t re-set between spins.
Overall I had the impression this will be game that will require a lot of patience and a hefty balance to enjoy. It clearly has been configured to deliver big moments, but it wasn’t going to happen in this short session!
