From Pragmatic Play in February 2021 came Eye of the Storm a game that received some criticism for being a pretty obvious re-working of Blueprint‘s classic Eye of Horus. It’s also treading some VERY well-worn tracks here as ancient Egypt is one of the most common slots themes around. So, if you are going to build another, you better make it good or it will get lost in the crowd. For reference, it can be done – check out Hacksaw’s Hand of Anubis for proof! Anyway, back to Eye of the Storm and the style and artwork at least are pretty compelling. A backdrop of imposing pillars, with the everlasting pyramids and temples set in the background, is overlooked by looming clouds that appear conjure up a majestic storm.

The stand-out feature of the maths model is the high variance (5/5) also shown on the screesshot, which comes with a warning for casual slots fans – this game has great potential but will also serve up long periods with little or no return. Eye of the Storm has just 10 active paylines, fixed for every spin.

The lower value icons on the reels are represented by the playing cards, 9 through to Ace, with a 10x max win for five on a payline.

The premium icons are beautifully designed and drawn as a Fan, an Ankh, a Scarab, a Bird and a Cat painted onto stone tablets in keeping with the theme of the game. These trigger payouts of between 20x and 40x for 5 of a kind depending on which icons land. The game’s highest-paying symbol is a bejeweled Eye of Horus which delivers a prize of 50x your wager whenever a combination of 5 lands on a winline.

There is also an Egyptian goddess which represents the Wild which substitutes for all symbols bar the Scatter to form winlines. Finally, check out the scatter, depicted by a Pyramid, which is required to trigger the big money free spins round – more on that in a moment.

The Eye of the Storm is not as feature-packed as other high variance slots on the market right now, but it still has some compelling stuff going on, including wild reels and the free spins bonus round which is what you’ll need to unlock if you want to score something even close to the top payout.

Here is how all that works:

Expanding Wilds

The Wild Egyptian Godess acts as a standard wild, creating wins when subbing in for other symbols on winlines. It will only land on the central three reels, but when it does, it will expand to cover the entire reel, enhancing the win potential on that spin.

Scatter Pays

The scatter symbol is important for two reasons. Here, the ancient Pyramid triggers wins of 2x, 20x and 50x for 3, 4 or 5 landing at once on any reels or combination of reels. But it is also important because 3 or more landing simultaneously will trigger the free spins round.

Free Spins

When 3 Pyramids hit that’s your ticket to 12 free plays. The round comes with a decent

symbol upgrade system. When one Wild drops, so more free spins are added and the level increases by one. When two Wilds land, so 3 more free spins are added and the level is increased by two. Then, if 3 Wilds land, so 5 additional free spins are added and the level increases by three.

In total there are six levels and with progress to each one, so a low value symbol is upgraded to the next one up in the paytable. A similar mechanic can be found on Thunderkick’s Pink Elephants where it is possible to upgrade all lower value icons to premiums.

And finally, note that obtaining 3 Scatters during the free spins round gets a re-trigger and 12 more spins added to the total.

The Final Verdict

Eye of the Storm is definitely NOT a ground-breaking slot. High risk Egyptian slots are ten a penny in todays world. But it is still possible to produce original and fun games in this group – some of the John Hunter games or Yggdrasil’s Valley of the Gods for example. Unfortunately, Pragmatic Play have not done that. Instead they have utilised standard features like expanding symbols and wilds, albeit on a pretty tasty maths model. And in short, it all feels a bit like we’ve been here many times before.

In conclusion, we would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys high risk gaming and likes the classic Egyptian style. But those looking for something a bit different and original in their slots play should look elsewhere.
