The long-awaited sequel to the famous Aztec-themed Gonzo’s Quest slot, featuring his female companion, arrived in casinos in September 2022 on the Red Tiger label. A more volatile game, Gonzita’s Quest removes the progressive multiplier from the base game avalanches but offers much more in the free spins round instead. Whatever you make of the gameplay, and this sequel is not everyone’s cup of tea, you can’t deny the quality of the production in Gonzita’s Quest. This game looks incredible and it’s no surprise. Expectations are high for a slot like this one and Red Tiger would not want to disappoint. As you can see from the screen shots on this page the backdrop is spectacular with awesome views of sunsets over the Aztec temples, intricate carvings are beautifully rendered on the reels, and the animations of Gonzita are superb throughout.

In short, the standards set in Gonzo’s Quest have been maintained and once again this feels like an immersive game that is a cut above its rivals.

Symbols and Paytable

The main game takes place on a 5 reel and 3 row grid. Wins require you to land identical symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, starting at the left-most reel. The row on the reel is not relevant, they must just be adjacent. That gives you 20 fixed paylines.

Symbol values are good, starting with low payers which are the simpler design of carved stone face. They bring in from 2x up to 8x for five on a payline. The premiums are represented by the more intricate stone carvings in green, purple, blue and yellow. These have huge payouts of up to 125x for five on a payline.

There are also plain stone blocks that come with multipliers attached. These are your scatters, so look out for them. When THREE or more land on one spin, the free spins round is unlocked.

There are NO WILDS in Gonzita’s Quest.

Gonzita’s Quest is a great game to look at but for much of the base game, there is not a lot to get excited about. This is more an exercise in waiting to unlock free spins, and that can take some time.

So just relax and enjoy the view as great stone blocks drop into place. The avalanche mechanic that made Gonzo’s Quest so popular is still here, but the progressive multiplier is not. After any win, the winning blocks blast apart in a shower of coins to create space on the grid. When this happens, new blocks drop in to replace them. New wins may be created, in which case the process repeats, and so on

Occasionally Gonzita runs over to the middle or the reel set and picks up a piece of gold and kisses it, then runs back to her position by the reels.

In our sessions there were no wins great than a 10x in the base game. But we did unlock the bonus round twice. This is done by landing three or more plain stones with multiplier values on them. When this happens, a new animation starts, the middle reel is removed and Gonzita strolls through into blazing sunshine on the other side. Now, a new screen is presented, Gonzita takes her place on a throne where reel 3 should be and your bonus begins.

With Gonzita sat in the middle there are now just four reels, each with three rows on them. Onto each reel drops stone blocks with either blanks or multiplier values. After each drop, bet multiplier blocks remain, but blank blocks are removed. You start with 3 spins, and provided a multiplier block drops on a spin, the spin total re-sets to 3. If no multiplier drops, then the total spins drops by 1.

There are 3 rounds, each with a set of stones with higher multiplier values than the last. To move to the next round you must fill ONE or more of the reels with multiplier blocks before you run out of spins. When this is done, ALL the multiplier values are collected and the next round begins with higher value multipliers. These are the possible multiplier values at each level:

  • Stone Slabs –1x, 2x, 5x or 7x.
  • Golden Slabs –10x, 25x, 50x or 75.
  • Diamond Slabs –100x, 250x, 500x or 750x.

In our sessions we unlocked the free spins round twice. The first time we run out of free spins before moving up to the Golden Slabs level. The second time we made it to Golden slabs, but not Diamond. The total win was 33x.

The Final Verdict

Gonzita’s Quest is quite a different game to the original with the focus firmly on unlocking the bonus round where players should accumulate as many multipliers as possible to earn the biggest payout. The base game is not particularly interesting but the bonus round can deliver some real thrills. Its tense stuff waiting to see which blocks will land and whether you can score some high value multipliers. We’ve yet to see the Diamond level but with prizes up to 750x it will surely deliver some big wins soon.
