What Our Reviewer Says …
One of Thunderkick's best slots for some time, with real Tombstone vibes but sadly without the massive max win!
What We Like
- Dark western theme with great graphics and gunshot animations
- Duel feature leads to expanding symbols, including wilds
- Duels are guaranteed in the free spins round
- Wilds have multipliers of up to 16x
What We Didn't Like
- Maximum RTP is just 94.31%
- Max win isn't huge at just 7,500x
Theme and Design
The Gunman of Goldwood is a serious take on the Wild West theme. The action takes place on a dusty street lined with wooden buildings. The sun is setting against a majestic mountain range in the background and the whole thing feels ominous, as though perhaps a duel is about to take place. The reels themselves are hewn from wood too and home to a whole host of genre appropriate symbols. The gunman himself is the star of the show, with a confident smirk and his pistol drawn.
If you’re a fan of the Western genre then this is a slot that’s worth checking out. The graphics are crisp, the theme is strong and though there’s nothing particularly outstanding or unique about the theme, it’s a solid one.
RTP and Variance
Gunman of Goldwood has two RTP settings - 94.31% and 87%. This not untypical for Thunderkick who rarely produce slots with an RTP in the 96% range any more. Of course, you want to be playing at the 94.31% rate so check the setting wherever you play before you spend any money. You can do that by browsing the game rules screen.
One of the best sites to play Thunderkick slots is MrQ from Lindar Media who always run games at the highest available RTP settings.
This is also a high variance game and this slot provider is not shy of cranking up the volatility. As our tests showed, it can be very streaky and burn your balance at times, so choose a sensible stake to stay in the game.
Maximum Win
Gunman of Goldwood wins max out at 7,500x. That's not huge for a high variance slot, and certainly there are Thunderkick games with better potential like Gods of Rock (20,000x) and Xterminate (25,000x). Or, if you want to stay on the Western theme, NLC's Tombstone RIP sets the record at 300,000x, and Western Gold 2 from Just For The Win has a top prize of 25,000x your stake.
Symbols and Paytable
The Gunman of Goldwood plays on 5 reels, each with 3 rows, and just 10 paylines. Wins are generated by landing 3 or more matching symbols on a payline, starting from the leftmost reel.
Symbols values are very good, particularly at the top end of the table.
There are 10 pay symbols plus a wild and a scatter. The low-value symbols are the traditional 10, J, Q, K, and A, which offer payouts ranging from 2x to 2.5x the bet for five of a kind. The premium symbols include a cross, whiskey bottle, dagger, revolver, and the gunman himself. These symbols yield higher rewards, with payouts between 5x and 50x the bet for five of a kind.
The Wild Symbol aids in forming winning combinations by substituting for all other symbols except the Scatter Symbol, which is key to unlocking the Free Spins feature.
Features and Gameplay
Gunman of Goldwood compliments its excellent production with some genuinely innovative features including an interesting way to add multipliers into wild wins. This is how it all works.
Wilds With Multipliers
As usual, the wild symbol substitutes all symbols except the scatter to complete paylines.
However, unusually, it brings a multiplier into play dependent on how many wilds are in the line. So, one wild brings up a 2x, two wilds brings up a 4x, three wilds brings up an 8x, and four wilds brings up a 16x.
Duel Feature
The headline feature, and one that showed itself to be powerful in testing, is the Duel. You'll know its coming because a red banner showing just a bandit's eyes will appear in front of the reels.
Then, any symbols in a winning combo expand to cover their whole reel. A winning pay symbols can only expand ONCE, regardless of how many paylines it appears in. But wilds can expand multiple times, once for each payline they are in.
Free Spins Round With Duels
The free spins round is powerful here too, taking the game to another level.
If you land 3, 4, or 5 scatters - represented by the bell - then you start the free spins round with 8, 12, or 16 free spins respectively. During the round a random wild symbol is dropped in at the start of every spin (on reels 2, 3, or 4).
But more importantly, the Duel feature is ALWAYS ON. That means, winning symbols can be expanding all over the place. Combine that with your wilds (potentially with multipliers) and you've got some big potential here.
Final Verdict
Gunman of Goldwood bridges the gap between classic and video slot. The Wild West theme is as dusty and gritty as the dirt road this slot is set on. There’s no faulting the graphics department here, they’ve done a top job that’s reminiscent of the original Red Dead Redemption video game.
And excellent visual and audio work is backed up by scintillating gameplay. Despite its high volatility, Gunman of Goldwood rarely sits still. The duels are very powerful, particularly when wilds are involved, or if you can get 3 or more expanders on consecutive reels. And with a configuration that guarantees both features in the free spins round, Gunman of Goldwood is surely going to produce some big moments over time.
Testing Notes
Test spins and results analysis by Mark Wadie.
Results from 150 spins on The Gunman of Goldwood on Thunderkick’s test servers prior to release.
- Stake Size: 1
- Start balance: 5,000
- End balance: 5,167.50
- Hit Rate: 20% (30 winning spins in 150)
- Biggest Win: 147.5x
- Free Spins Round: 2
This was really fun game to play, not least because it dropped the free spins round TWICE in 150 spins, which is unusual. It came in with a win rate of 20% which isn’t too bad – bear in mind Tombstone RIP, another moody western, can drop as low as 10% at times. But I would add a warning that the payouts were very streaky. So you could hit 5 wins in a row, then 20 dry spins on the bounce. It’s unpredictable.
The highlight of course was the free spins round but before we get there I should mention the duels. These dropped 4 times, producing a 20x and 19.5x win, then two duds, with no win at all. The 20x came from expanding symbols on reels 1, 2 and 3 which you can see in this screenshot. Looks like you could fill the reels with one symbol this way.
The free spins round gave me 16 spins in the end as three more scatters landed during the feature to extend by 8 spins. It’s going to be a powerful one because the Duel feature is always active so you get A LOT of expanding symbols. It also looks great as the action switches to a stormy backdrop, again borrowing atmosphere from some of NLC’s darker westerns. My total win from this part was 147.5x. Not bad, but there is plenty more to be had.
