Firstly, I should say that this is a quick play – 200 spins in under 12 minutes is very fast, reflecting the lack of any significant features or a free spins round.  In total I counted 71 winning spins – 35.5%. That’s an unusually high hit rate, but they were generally small – just 11x was the highest. Most came at under stake value. Scatters were very regular meaning the reel multipliers regularly grew to 2x or 3x, and sometimes 5x, but wilds were less frequent and two 5x multipliers went unused as wilds never landed on reels 4 and 5 to unlock them. Overall, the simple gameplay and low numbers in the paytable made for an uneventful 200 spins.

The action takes place against a tropical jungle background with lush greens and yellows, streams of sunlight and thick vegetation catching the eye. It’s a little reminiscent of classics like NetEnt‘s Jungle Spirit and Blueprint Gaming‘s Gorilla Gold Megaways. One of the stand out features of the production is the blissed out soundtrack that makes you feel very at peace with the world. Maybe it’s this that is keeping the gorilla looking so benign too.

Symbol values are mediocre but the use of multipliers throughout the game means their values are quickly enhanced. Wins are scored by landing matching symbols on paylines from left to right.

Premiums are represented by five animals – chameleon, elephant, parrot, tiger, gorilla. Five of the highest paying gorillas pays out 4.5x for five on a line.

Golden Gorilla Scatters Increase Reel Multipliers

In a nutshell, this it it … each reel has a multiplier displayed above it. They start at 1x and whenever a scatter golden gorilla lands on a reel it pushes the multiplier value up by 1x.

This can happen up to 5 times, so the multiplier has the potential to reach a maximum value of 5x the payout. 

Importantly, they do NOT re-set between spins, but only when they are used as described below.

Wild Symbols Trigger The Multiplier Values

Now, when a wild lands on any reel it takes on the multiplier value at the top of its reel to be applied to any win line it is a part of. And if more than one wild appears in a win line, then their multipliers are multiplied rather than added. So two 3x multipliers would get you a 9x total, not 6x.

And that’s your lot because once a win has been triggered, the multipliers used in that win are re-set to 1x.

The Final Verdict

Jungle Gorilla is a slot that will appeal to the pure gamblers who don’t like too many features to complicate their games. Whilst the gameplay isn’t bad – there is some fun jeopardy in watching those multipliers build then hoping they combine in a good payline to make the most of the multiplier’s value – due to the low paytable values the wins were too often insignificant. There is potential in multipliers that combine but over 200 spins this never happened in testing and it left us feeling that Jungle Gorilla wouldn’t be a game worth coming back to.
