Theme and Design
Two Game Modes With Superb Audio-Visual Production
Big Cat and Safari slots are one of the most common types of online slot game so if you want to make one that stands out, it better look the part. Big Time Gaming have satisfied that requirement by creating a beautifully rendered backdrop that switches between African Savannah for Lion mode, all golden grasslands, and deep, dark jungle with turquoise sunlight for Puma mode. In the background a relentless, pounding African drum and electro soundtrack accompanies your spins and every time a big cat wild lands it gives a menacing growl. It looks and sounds great and signals another top quality game from a top tier developer.
RTP and Variance
King of Cats Megaways has two modes, each with a very slightly different RTP. The lion mode has a 96.72% RTP and the puma mode has a 96.7% RTP. Both are above average for an online slot game and give a good potential return on your wagering. This is also, as you would expect from a Big Time Gaming slot with the Megaways engine, a high variance game, so it will be volatile with an uneven pay distribution. However, it does have the potential to kick out some massive wins too!
Maximum Win
The top payout here is 56,620x which is big, even for a Megaways slot. You can find more games like this in our list of slots with the highest maximum wins.
Symbols and Paytable
King of Cats Megaways plays on the standard Megaways reels set with 6 reels, each displaying up to 7 rows of symbols on each spin. This is a Win Ways game which means you only need to land 3 or more identical symbols on adjacent reels, regardless of their row position, from left to right starting at the left most reel, to trigger a win.
That creates up to 117,649 paylines per spin (7x7x7x7x7x7).
The paytable has 10 symbols. There are 6 low value symbols which are the cards, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. These are valued at from 0.1x for 9 9s up to 0.8x for 6 Aces. The premiums are the four gemstones, green, blue, red and purple. These are valued at from 0.25x for 3 greens up to 25x for 6 purples.
There are also Wilds that substitute for pay symbols to complete paylines but have no pay value of their own. These appear only on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Features and Gameplay
The extra features in King of Cats are limited. There are no Cascading Wins, which is unusual for a Megaways slot. However, there are TWO play modes which you can switch between at your leisure on every spin. Each mode has its own configuration of Wilds and Free Spins which work as follows:
Lion Mode – Supersized Wilds and Free Spins With Progressive Multipliers
The Lion Mode is all about super-sized wilds that appear as a lion. These can be 2x2, 3x3 or 4x4. The good part is, they come with multipliers of 4x, 9x or 16x respectively.
If you land 3, 4, 5 or 6 scatters on one spin then you will get 8, 12, 16 or 20 free spins. And now, the same wilds as from the base game come with a 2x, 5x or 8x multiplier and now those numbers INCREASE by 2x, 5x and 10x every time a wild lion lands. That gives you the chance to REALLY build some BIG wild multipliers values.
And finally, you can re-trigger the free spins simply by landing 3 or more scatters once more.
Puma Mode – Fully Wild Reels and Free Spins With Progressive Multipliers
In Puma Mode the set-up is different. Now you have up to THREE full reel wilds that appear as the puma. These come with their own multipliers of either 2x, 3x or 4x.
This time the free spins configuration is a little different too. Landing 3, 4, 5 or 6 scatters will get you 15, 18, 21 or 24 free spins. When a Puma Wild lands on any spin it will show a 2x, 4x or 6x multiplier. And these grow too, so that each time one appears on the same reel, then the multipliers grow by 1x, 2x or 3x respectively.
And again, it’s possible to re-trigger the free spins simply by landing 3 or more scatters once more.
Final Verdict
This is an excellent Megaways slot but with its slimmed down gameplay it will appeal more to the pure high volatility gamblers out there than casual players looking to test their luck on the expanding ways engine.
There are fewer features than you find in other Megaways games but that is made up for by giving players the simple choice of two different game modes. For me, though the difference may look subtle, testing showed that in fact the two modes have quite distinct engines. The lion mode seems more geared up to fewer, but bigger wins, whilst the puma wins will be more frequent, if smaller in size. Whatever your preference, having the choice to switch between the two and enjoy a different wild configuration and background art is exciting, particularly with such excellent audio visual production behind each one too. And of course, like all BTG slots, the icing on the cake here is the huge potential which can be triggered by those big progressive multipliers in free spins.
In short, another top class slot from a studio at the top of their game.
Testing Notes
I played 200 spins on King of Cats Megaways for free at Casumo Casino to test the game. To test both modes I played 100 spins on each. This is what happened.
Lion Mode
- Stake Size: £1
- Start balance: £5,000
- End balance: £4,974.85
- Biggest Win: 51.8x
- Spins with Super-Sized Wilds: 5
- Free Spins Round: 1
- Session Time: 10 minutes 30 seconds
Puma Mode
- Stake Size: £1
- Start balance: £4,974.85
- End balance: £4,948.15
- Biggest Win: 19.8x
- Spins with At Least One Wild Reel: 21
- Free Spins Round: 1
- Session Time: 12 minutes 34 seconds
The Puma was much more generous with its wild stacks than the Lion was with its super-sized wilds. There were 21 spins with wild reels in the puma mode, twice where two reels were wild but never more, and just 5 spins with super-sized wilds in the lion mode. That is quite a difference – just over 10% in puma mode and 2.5% in lion mode. Of course, this is offset by the potential value of the multipliers – up to 16x in the lion mode and just 4x in the puma mode. So, it is to be expected that the puma wilds would appear more frequently.
Still, the best base game win came from the puma mode at 19.8x. In lion mode I didn’t score more than a 5x win in the base game, even when lion wilds of 4x were in play.
The puma mode didn’t trigger a free spins, but the lion mode did (just once) and its easy to see how it can yield some big wins. Here, the wilds dropped on 4 out of 8 spins so that by the end of my 8 spin round the multipliers were 10x, 25x and 40x for 2x2, 3x3 or 4x4 lion wilds. The overall win from free spins was 51.8x win by the end.
In conclusion, if you want more frequent wild multipliers, the puma mode is the better to go for. But if you want a big hitting multiplier, and bigger overall potential, I would opt for lion mode.
