How We Review Slot Games
We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.As the originators of the Megaways™ slots model now ubiquitous in UK slot sites, Big Time Gaming’s releases in the extended reels format are always eagerly awaited. BTG are the kings of innovation in slot gaming and if anyone was worried that the sale of the company to Swedish giant Evolution Gaming might blunt their creative edge, well on this evidence, we can all sleep easy. King of Cats takes a familiar game theme and executes a fine twist on the Megaways™ game format by giving players the option to switch between two slots with different backdrops and minor alterations in gameplay so they can decide for themselves who is the true king – the lion or the puma!
The action all takes place on beautifully-illustrated reel sets and backdrops. The regal lion is roaming a grassy savannah with huge trees and dusty orange earth beneath its feet whilst the puma reel set is amongst the dark, wet forest all entwined with vines. Atmosphere is key here and might help you decide which cat you want to start spinning with. Whichever you choose at any point in your session, the action seamlessly swtiches as the reels spin and the backdrop fades from one habitat to the other in super-slick fashion. Kudos to the design team for that excellent piece of work!
It appears that Big Time Gaming will be utilising this two in one slot format again as they have gone to the trouble of trademarking the name – Playerselect™. It certainly seems to have good potential and might keep you involved in a game for longer than usual as a slow, frustrating run on one screen can be migitated by switching to the other, from Lion to Puma and back again! Although of course we should keep in mind that it’s not the same as changing games – essentially you are still locked into the same slot game session regardless of which screen you are on, though the maths models are slightly different as we shall see in a moment.

RTP and Variance
Our Score 9
What is RTP?
RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next. Read more here. What is Variance?
Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.King of Cats is another high variance game – there are very few Megaways™ titles that don’t fall into this category – so the pay model is tight and will be tough to break down. You can read more about the significance of variance on your slots experience here. The RTP of the game is variable based on the screen you opt for – the Puma game is set to 96.7% whilst the Lion Game is set to 96.72%. To be honest, that gives not much to choose between the two, both of which are industry average.
The best paying of the two screen is the Puma, which can deliver up to 56,620x stake whilst the Lion game has a max potential of just 24,200 x stake. The base game is also solid with 1,070 x stake for the Puma game and 6,060 x stake for the Lion game.
Symbols and Paytable
Our Score 8
The usual elements of Megaways™ are all here – six reels, up to 7 rows each, but King of Cats eschews the normal cascading wins gameplay and instead uses bigger sized symbols to push up the win potential. Winning combinations are formed in the usual way- you’ll need to hit 3 or more identical elements or wilds on neighboring reels, beginning from reel 1 on the left.
Low value icons are represented by the cards, 9 through to Ace, whilst the high value icons are gemstones in different colors, giving up to 25x for six on a payline. There are also three wilds in the game which come with multipliers, a key element of King of Cats slot. They come in different sizes to boost your wins.
Features and Gameplay
Our Score 9
King of Cats Megaways™ does not boast the huge range of features that many of its sister slots do. The key to the fun here is the switching between screens on any given spins and boosting payouts with the huge potential that multiple multiplier wilds brings. There are some slight differences in how the wilds appear in each mode, but its actually pretty simple once you get into it, but no less fun for it.
Playerselect™ Feature
When you load up King of Cats you will notice that there are two spin buttons – one for each screen. You can choose to only play one game if you like, or switch on every alternate spin, it’s totally up to you – there are no limitations on how you can use this feature. And both games come with their own features. Just remember that they don’t interact – do free spins in one game can’t carry over to the other for example.
Free Spins, Wilds and Multipliers
These are crucial to how the game plays.
Lion Game
In the base game, the Lion mode comes with super-sized wilds that are 2×2, 3×3, or 4×4 wilds in size and can drop on any spin. They carry 4x, 9x and 16x multipliers respectively.
Free Spins are awarded in Lion mode for landing 3, 4, 5 or 6 scatters which gets you 8, 12, 16 or 20 free plays. In the bonus game, your wilds multipliers are ramped up to 4x, 10x and 16x for the 3 wild sizes.
It’s easy to see how landing a few of these bigger wilds in the bonus round can start to notch up some crazy wins.
Puma Game
There are some small variations in how the Puma game treats free spins, multipliers and wilds. They work here as follows:
In the base game, on any spin, fully stacked Puma wilds can land up to 3 high each with a multiplier of 2x, 3x or 4x. This way you can land 3 totally wild reels!
Free spins will be awarded once again for hitting 3, 4, 5 or 6 scatters to get you 15, 18, 21 or 24 plays. Then, during the bonus round, the first wild to hit will land with a guaranteed 2x, 4x or 6x multiplier. But when further wilds land on the same reel as the first, then the multipliers values increase to 3x, 5x or 7x.
In the Puma game it is possible to re-trigger your free spins by landing 3 or more scatters once again.
The Final Verdict
Our Score 8.4
Once again Big Time Gaming have produced an innovative slots concept that elevates their product above the competition. To fully understand and enjoy this game you need to appreciate the difference between the two modes and decide which is right for you. Of course, if the reels aren’t falling right, you can always switch to another whenever you like, but try to work out which is most appealing before you start playing.
It all really comes down the free spins and multipliers which are the only big win drivers here. Keep in mind that in the base game, the Lion is potentially much more lucrative with a top payout potential of 6,060x compared to 1,070 in the Puma game. However, that switches to 56,620x for Puma and 24,200x for Lion in the bonus rounds.
The other main difference between the two is the size and nature of wilds – in the Puma version they come in stacks, whilst the Lion delivers in 2×2, 3×3 and 4×4 sizes.
In summary, there is enough variation between the two modes to make this game really interesting and the execution of the new Playerselect™ feature is slick. Fans of Megaways™ have a new toy to get their teeth into! Good luck and have fun!
