Outlaw
By Big Time Gaming
Outlaw (November 2022) by Big Time Gaming is the third instalment in a trilogy of slot games that started back in 2019 with Lil Devil and continued with the excellent Wild Flower in 2021. All three games take their inspiration from hit songs by the English alternative 80s rock band, The Cult, a favourite of BTG chief, Nik Robinson. Outlaw is a Megaways game with high variance, multipliers of up to 777x (yes, 777x!) and a 64,400x top win. It's available to spin at all online slot sites listed in this review.

Theme and Design
Artwork in Outlaw is a continuation of Lil Devil in style and if you’ve played that slot then you’ll recognise the setting, a kind of badlands with burning sun, dry heat, hazy skies and deep red rock mountains in the distance. The action takes place outdoors but moves inside to a bar when the free spins round kicks in.
The base game is all anticipation and its better for it – there is no soundtrack, only the sounds of the reels clicking into place at the end of each spin and the sheriff loading his gun when he lands. But it all goes off if you trigger the bonus - The Cult’s Outlaw starts up and continues throughout for full effect, reels whirl, lightning strikes, wilds stick, and you know for sure that you are in BTG world.
RTP and Variance
Outlaw has an RTP of 96.01% which is solid for a video slot game and standard for a Big Time Gaming slot.
No surprise that Outlaw is a high volatility slot which takes no prisoners. As you would expect, the base game is relentlessly tough but with its crazy combinations of free spins, sticky wilds and multipliers, free spins rounds can really pop.
Maximum Win
The maximum payout in Outlaw is 64,400x. That puts it short of the other two games in this series, Lil Devil (100,000x) and Wild Flower (114,100x) but still in the top 10 highest max win slots from BTG.
Symbols and Paytable
Outlaw follows the classic Megaways style with 6 reels each carrying between 2 and 7 rows per spin. As wins are triggered for landing identical symbols on consecutive reels, regardless of position, that creates up to 117,649 paylines when all 6 reels are fully expanded to 7 rows (7x7x7x7x7x7).
Low paying symbols are the six cards, 9 through to Ace. These are valued at from 0.1x for 3 9s up to 0.4x for 6 Aces. Premium symbols are the green flower, medicine bottle, red flower and painted skull, valued at from 0.2x for 3 green flowers up to 10x for 6 painted skulls.
Features and Gameplay
2 Wild Reels
In the base game at least, Outlaw is a relatively simple slot. Unlike most Megaways games there are no win cascades, only the two wilds, which both stretch to full reel height and substitute for any standard pay symbols to complete paylines. The Wild Sheriff is the better of the two, coming with a 7x multiplier. The Wild Outlaw has no multiplier attached. Either can land on reels 2, 3, 4 or 5.
Two Free Spins Rounds
There are 2 free spins rounds – Fallen Angles or Dizzy in the Head. The configuration for each is different and it is the players choice which one plays out.
Three or more scatters are required to trigger the free spins. Standard scatters are sliver but if a Gold Megascatter lands as part of the triggering group, then enhanced versions of the free spins are awarded.
Fallen Angels Free Spins
In this configuration 7 spins are awarded. Before they start, one spinning reel stops to reveal a low pay symbol that will be Sticky Wild for the round on reels 2 to 5. Where it lands, it sticks in place for the remaining spins and locks the number of rows on that reel as well. So, if when it lands, 7 rows are in play, that reel will ALWAYS show 7 reels for each remaining spin. It is possible to completely fill a reel with Sticky Wilds, in which case 3 extra spins are awarded.
If you are lucky enough to unlock the Enhanced version of Fallen Angels then one of the premium symbols is also chosen to be a Sticky Wild before the round starts. It can land on reels 2 to 5 as well.
Dizzy In the Head Free Spins
In this configuration you get 8 free spins. At the start a Ladder Wild will appear on one reel. It shows a multiplier value of 11x, 22x, 33x, 44x, 55x, 66x or 77x and slides left or right between spins, but always stays on the reels.
You can extend the round by landing 3, 4 or 5 scatters to get you 4, 6 or 8 extra free spins.
In the enhanced version of Dizzy in the Head, each time the Wild Ladder is used as part of a win, its multipliers increase up to 111x, 222x, 333x, 444x, 555x, 666x or 777x at the top.
Exchange Your Win For Free Spins
Finally, you can also exchange any win of more than 100x for entry direct to the free spins. Or, if you win between 25x and 100x you can exchange your win for the chance to gamble for entry direct to free spins. The gamble is a wheel with green and red segments for win or lose.
Final Verdict
What I love about Outlaw, and the other two slots in this trilogy, is the marked difference between the base games, all relentless slow burning slots play with little or no return, waiting for that moment when the scatters strike, and the bonus rounds, where suddenly you are thrown into late night red neck bar with a Cult track on the jukey, drinks flying everywhere, and sticky wilds and multipliers kicking in.
Because that is what this slot is all about. And everyone who plays it, knows it. There is no pretending. Sure, occasionally a rare combination of a 7x Sheriff Wild and a 3 or 4 premiums might just land you a 20x or more, but in reality, the base game is only about waiting for the scatters to drop.
When they do, either of the two bonus round options can be very lucrative and the features have exciting cumulative potential, which is what high variance games are all about. Fallen Angels is simply about landing as many Sticky Wilds as possible and hoping to re-trigger to extend the round. But its counterpart is the more compelling of the two. Dizzy in the Head will make some people just that by watching the Wild Ladder with its huge 777x multipliers slide back and forth over the reels between spins. It fits perfectly with the raucous soundtrack and anarchic style of this part of the game and it’s the only place where getting up to that 64,400x top win is possible.
As far as its place in the trilogy goes, Outlaw may have the lowest max win of the three, but by switching from 4,096 ways to Megaways and adding the Wild Multiplier Ladder to the free spins round, it more than holds its own and shows itself to be a fitting way to end the series.
Testing Notes
We tested Outlaw with 200 spins at Casumo. These are the numbers from that session.
- Spins: 200
- Stake Size: 1p
- Start balance: £1003.50
- End balance: £1001.85
- Biggest Win (including bonus rounds): 75x
- Free Spins rounds: 2
- Session Time: 20 mins 51 seconds
We got to enjoy most of what Outlaw has to offer in a relatively short session of 200 spins in 20 minutes. After an early 3x win the base game predictably didn’t deliver much beyond very small – less than the stake - payouts. The sheriff and outlaw wilds are fairly regular but didn’t get much of a chance to shine.
We never saw a single Golden Scatter but we did unlock the free spins round twice. First time we picked Dizzy in the Head which produced a pleasing 75x win from its 8 spins. Second time, on Fallen Angels spins the Sticky Wild didn’t help much and we only came away with a 9.2x win.
