Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played Power of Thor Megaways™
IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.
Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers
I played 200 spins on Power of Thor Megaways for real money at Duelz Casino to test the game and this is what happened.
- Stake Size: £0.2
- Start balance: £39.15
- End balance: £60.48
- Biggest Win: 175.5x
- Free Spins: 0
- Session Time: 18 minutes 48 seconds
I was unable to trigger the free spins in 200 tries which is frustrating but not that uncommon for a high variance game. It can take 250 or even 300 spins to get there. The other big feature is Thor’s Hammer which itself only triggered twice in 200 spins. However, when it did arrive, on the first occasion that brought up a 175.5x win. This was possible because the Hammer started on the far right of the 1×4 reel and moved one position to the left with each consecutive cascade. That meant I got 3 consecutive wins from the feature. The other Thor’s Hammer brought up a 19x win which isn’t terrible, but not great either. The rest of the session was characterised by regular, if small wins, often less than the stake.
In short, over 200 spins, Power of Thor behaved as you would expect a high variance game to where not much happens for a very long time and then a big win drops in out of nowhere! It would have been good to see how the free spins round goes, but on this occasion it wasn’t to be.

What Our Reviewer Says ...
"A classic Megaways™ game that impresses with it's epic production and extra Thor's Hammer feature but falls a little short on payout potential!"
Overall Score: 7.2
Theme & Design
Our Score 8
A Dramatic Slot Inspired By Norse Mythologies Powerful Gods
Power of Thor Megaways is nothing if not dramatic. And why not? After all, we are invoking one of Norse mythologies most powerful deities when loading up this game. Thor has appeared in many a Norse slot, wielding thunder and lightning whenever he appears, so an epic orchestral score, as well as a full-blooded, big-bearded representation of the god and his friends on the paytable is what is needed here. Meanwhile, the backdrop to our impressive Megaways reelset is a sweeping Scandinavian mountainside with snowcapped peaks, druid-like stone obelisks and tall evergreens catching the eye. This is a game that seems to promise drama from the outset, inviting you in to give it a spin.
RTP and Variance
Our Score 8
What is RTP?
RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next. Read more here. What is Variance?
Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.Power of Thor Megaways has three RTP settings – 96.55%, 95.55% or 94.59%. Ideally you want to play at the optimum setting which is above average for an online slot. However, some casinos will run the game at lower rates. So I recommend that you check the RTP on the game info screen before you spin. As part of this review I found Power of Thor to be running at the optimum 96.55% RTP at both MrQ and Barz Casino.
As you would expect from a Megaways slot, this is also a highly volatile game – rated 5/5 by Pragmatic Play themselves. So it will be unpredictable.
Maximum Win
Our Score 6
What Is Maximum Win?
Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.Perhaps the least impressive part about this game is its maximum win – just 5,000x. For a highly volatile slot in the Megaways format that is low. For comparison, you can get much, much higher potential in classics like Wild Portals Megaways – 116,030x or Wheel of Fortune Megaways™ – 80,150x.
Symbols and Paytable
Our Score 7
Pragmatic Play opted for the standard Megaways™ template for Power of Thor – six reels, each displaying between 2 and 7 rows of symbols per spin. Wins are triggered by landing between 3 and 6 identical symbols along a payline from left to right, or 2 and 6 for the top paying premium. Remember, as the number of rows grows, the number of paylines does too, right up to a whopping 117,649 (7x7x7x7x7x7).
In the paytable, you have 10 symbols. The low payers are the cards, Nine through to Ace which trigger between wins of between 0.6x and 1.25x when 6 appear on adjacent reels. The premium icons are a Female Warrior, two gruesome Vikings and Thor himself and issue from 2x to 20x the bet for 6 of a kind.
Look out as well for the Wild which is written out in golden luxurious letters, and substitutes for all other symbols bar Scatter and Hammer to form winlines. As in most Megaways™ games the wild can only be seen on the extra row that sits above the reels 2 to 5.
And finally, watch for the all-important scatter that you will need to trigger those free spins – the more you get, the more spins you are awarded.
Features and Gameplay
Our Score 7
I like the mix of standard Megaways features and one or two extras here. If you’ve played classic Megways games like Bonanza then you’ll be familiar with most of what follows.
Land More Wins From Each Spin With Tumble Wins
Ok, so we all know this feature, regularly used in Megaways™ slots and most famously in NetEnt’s Gonzo’s Quest game. Winning symbols are removed from the reels and new ones drop in to replace them. When this happens so more wins can occur. The process repeats until no more wins are created. Basically it gives you the chance to score progressive wins from one spin – and in the free spins round a progressive multiplier is added to the feature.
More on that in a moment.
Thors Hammer Transforms Symbols Into Wilds
This is Pragmatic Play’s addition to the Megaways mix.
Thor’s famous Hammer is key to extra wins in the base game and bonus rounds. It appears only on the top horizontal reel and must appear in full (it takes up two horizontal spaces on the reel set). When it does, all symbols on the reels below it are turned into Wilds, creating more opportunities for wins. Effectively you have TWO WIlD REELS each time this triggers.
Get Up To 30 Free Spins With Progressive Multipliers
Again, the free spins round is nothing new. Interestingly, Pragmatic Play have borrowed from the original Bonanza game here because you need 4 scatters spelling out the word ‘Thor’ to trigger the bonus (in Bonanza it is ‘Gold’).
4 scatters gets you 10 free spins, and each extra scatter earns you 4 more spins. So, 5 scatters gets you 14, 6 gets you 18, 7 gets you 22, 8 gets you 26 and 9 gets you 30.
And to make things more interesting still, if your spin total is between 10 and 18 then you can Gamble and up your spins total further. This is fun, but it can backfire – if you lose, then you go back to the base game. Bearing in mind how tough it is to get there in the first place, my advice would be to think very carefully before making that gamble.
Then, once into the free spins, you have the classic Bonanza-style progressive multiplier too. This is a 1x multiplier that grows by 1x with each successive tumble. It does NOT re-set between spins so if you have 30 spins, that can be an impressive multiplier.
Finally, there are also chances for re-triggers, as 4 extra free spins are added whenever 3 more Scatters land during the Round.
And Thor’s Hammer remains in play so wild reels may trigger at any time.
The Final Verdict
Despite its slightly underwhelming max payout – it doesn’t even get close to the blockbuster numbers offered by Nolimit City’s more recent titles – Power or Thor has a lot to offer and will please anyone with an interest in high risk slots action. The best parts are in the free spins round where combos of progressive multipliers, additional wilds and mega tumble sequence have the potential to seriously boost the payouts. In short, if you like Norse slots and you love Megaways™ then this is a slot you definitely need to be taking for a spin this year!
Useful Tips When Playing Power of Thor Megaways™
Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.
1. Choose A Sensible Stake
Power of Thor is a classic high variance game so it may take a long time to unlock any big wins. Setting your stake to a low level gives you more tries at triggering those big features.
2. Play With The Sound On
This is a game that requires the sound on to make the most of an impressive audio-visual experience. That epic soundtrack is the perfect accompaniment to chasing down big wins!
3. Keep Your Eyes Out For The Scatters
In my 200 spin test session the scatters seemed rare. When they do land, keep your eyes peeled for the full ‘T-H-O-R’ to trigger free spins. Remember, without one of the letters, the bonus won’t unlock.
