How We Review Slot Games
We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.2021 has not been a vintage year for Quickspin fans so far we think. There have been a few highlights in games like Blue Fortune and Sticky Bandits 3 Most Wanted, but we are still waiting for one of their super-charged games that really get the blood pumping.
Could that be Reno 7s?
Well, maybe not at first site as this is something of a departure from their usual fare. Quickspin are famed for their fantasy fairy tale games with plenty of features and slick, instantly recognisable graphics. So a very simple, 3-reel 3-row slot with 5 paylines and a fruit machine theme is not what we were expecting at all! But, hey, let’s not jump to conclusions – unexpected can sometimes be good and the super-high variance of this game suggests it may yet have a few surprises up its sleeve.
Before we get into the details, note the synth sound track that adds to the retro appeal of the game and the Reno skyline bathed in sunset blue and pink that adds some groovy atmosphere (those Quickspin designers showing their worth again).
And as you load up the game, in addition to the regular reels, you’ll also see a separate wheel at the top of the screen with a golden arrow waiting to award bonus payouts – perhaps that is the surprise we’ve been waiting for!

RTP and Variance
Our Score 7
What is RTP?
RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next. Read more here. What is Variance?
Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here. This slot offers just 5 pay lines – the fewest we can remember of any Quickspin game – and you have to land 3 or more matching symbols to achieve a payout.
Meanwhile, the 95.98% RTP is bang on average. And although the 5p minimum bet is great news for low rollers, the maximum volatility means this game has huge peaks and troughs in payouts, with the possibility of a 7,777x stake prize if you’re lucky – or long lean spells if you’re not. So tread carefully, and if you’re looking for a smooth ride then we recommend looking elsewhere. High risk fans though, read on to find out more.
Symbols and Paytable
Our Score 7
The symbols in Reno 7s include low-paying plums, lemons and watermelons, which award 1 to 3x stake for 3 of a kind. There are also high-paying bars, bells and lucky 7s, which award 8 to 77x stake for 3 of a kind. The diamond is the Wild symbol in the game and this awards the same as the lucky 7s, while also substituting for the other symbols to create more potential winning combinations.
There is also a Scatter symbol, which is the colourful wheel. This has the power to launch the Wheel of 7s Bonus, giving you the chance to win Free Spins or a cash prize.
Features and Gameplay
Our Score 7
Ok, so as we said, the gameplay here initially looks very simple, but there are two bonus features, triggered by the Wheel Symbols, that will elevate the gameplay and payouts to new heights if you can unlock them.
Wheel of 7s Bonus
If you land 2 or more Scatter symbols, the Wheel of 7s Bonus will begin. This means the half wheel at the top of the screen will spin. You can win a cash prize from the wheel, giving 5x, 7x, 22x, 55x, 77x, 777x or 7,777x stake. It’s also possible to trigger the Free Spins round if the wheel lands on the star segment.
Free Spins
You can launch the Free Spins round when you land the star segment from the Wheel of 7s Bonus. You can also trigger Free Spins separately when you land 3 Scatters, which launches the Wheel of 7s Bonus in addition to 15 Free Spins. When this happens, the Wild symbols expand to cover the whole reel. This round is re-triggerable if 3 more Scatters land for potentially lots of free winning chances.
Bonus Buy
In some jurisdictions, it’s possible to buy a bonus round. You can pay 22x stake to guarantee 2 Scatters on the next spin or 77x stake to guarantee 3 Scatters to launch the Wheel of 7 Bonus or Free Spins respectively.
This will also increase the RTP to a maximum of 96.43%
The Final Verdict
Our Score 6.6
Reno 7s is a simple slot with a retro style thanks to the 3 reels and classic fruit machine symbols. The synth soundtrack and Reno backdrop add some glamour and pizzazz. It’s interesting that Quickspin has chosen to theme the game on Reno rather than its more famous cousin Vegas, and this at least adds a bit of further intrigue to what on the face of it comes across as a very simple game.
However, the issue for some players here will be that the sky-high volatility is difficult to deal with and it can be a long time before you hit a good payout. That said, the 7,777x stake is a pretty competitive max payout and the Free Spins are a good feature round with the opportunity to re-trigger creating more tension, thrills and spills.
In summary, if you enjoy 3-reel slots, this will be right up your street. It’s bold, loud, garishly colourful and packs a punch for its diminutive size, but just watch out for the highly volatile gameplay during your visit to the ‘the biggest little city in the world’.
