Theme and Design
Journey Back To 80s-Era Heavy Rock Heaven With This Cartoon Slot
If you don’t license a bands or artists image for a rock n roll slot – like Def Leppard Hysteria for example – then you have to invent your own band. And Iron Dog do just that. Bizarely, theirs is one filled with literal cartoon rock n roll animals – including lions and warthogs! The action takes place on a huge stage with spotlights either side, like a real live gig, and the reel set has been nicely crafted with speakers used as the housing for each symbol, which looks a little different.
The soundtrack suggests we are journeying back to a kind of 80’s heavy metal era with added synth, and when the free spins round kicks in the music is turned up a notch for added affect. Of course, Rock the Reels lacks the star-quality of a game like NetEnt’s Hendrix but it’s more tongue in cheek and fun than anything so don’t take it too seriously.
RTP and Variance
Rock The Reels Megaways slot has 3 available RTP settings – 96.7%, 92% or 88%. Most UK slot sites run the game at 96.7% or 92%. Ideally you want to play at 96.7% for the best possible return on your wagering. Wherever you play, you can check the rate by hitting the ‘?’ symbol to the bottom left of the reels and scrolling down to ‘Return to Player’. I verified the RTP at Barz Casino, a White Hat Gaming site, for this review and found it to be running at 96.7%.
Like all the best Megaways games, Rock the Reels is a high variance slot so expect a volatile gaming experience. It can, from time to time, also kick out some really big wins.
Maximum Win
The maximum payout on a single spin in Rock the Reels Megaways is 50,000x which is superb. There are a few Megaways titles with higher max wins which you can find on our list of the slots with the biggest maximum wins.
Symbols and Paytable
Iron Dog have not sought to change the standard Megaways reel configuration in this game. So, we get 6 reels, each displaying between 2 and 7 rows of symbols on every spin. What makes the Megaways model interesting is that it uses a Win Ways mechanic where wins are triggered by landing 3 or more symbols on adjacent reels – regardless of their row position – so that you have a massive 117,649 paylines in play (7x7x7x7x7x7) at any time.
In the paytable there are 10 pay symbols. The low payers are the cards, 10 through to Ace. These are valued at from 0.01x for 3 10s up to 1x for 6 Aces. The premiums are the plectrum, tambourine, mixing deck, speaker stack and gold disc. These are valued at from 0.3x for 3 plectrums up to 15x for 6 Gold Discs.
There is also a Wild that only appears on reels 2 and 3. This substitutes for any pay symbol to complete a payline, but does NOT have a pay value of its own.
Most Megaways slots have an additional 1x4 reel above the main reels which performs a different function, and Rock the Reels is no exception. This reel spins horizontally and displays pay symbols AND band member symbols - Warthog, Octopus, Flamingo and Lion. These do NOT have a value but instead help to transform symbols on the reels beneath to boost payouts as explained below.
Features and Gameplay
The features in Rock The Reels are a mix of classic Megaways ones and new ones specific to this game which makes it interesting to play.
Cascading Wins
Anyone who is a regular Megaways slot player will know all about Cascading Wins. Any winning icons are removed from the reels after a winning spin to be replaced with new ones. If more wins are created, then the process repeats, and so on until no more wins are triggered.
Band Members Transform Symbols On The Reels Below
The band member symbols only appear on the horizontal reel at the top. Keep an eye on that because when they land, they transform symbols on the main reel set to make them more powerful. Here is what they do:
- Warthog can transform 2 to 4 symbols on reels 1 to 4 into Wilds.
- Octopus can transform 2 to 4 symbols on reels 1 to 4 into a random symbol from reel 1.
- Flamingo can transform 3 to 4 symbols on reels 1 to 3 into the high-paying cougar symbol.
- Lion can transform 2 symbols on reels 2 and 3 into Multiplier Wilds. This also adds a 2x Multiplier during the base game and a Progressive Multiplier during Free Spins.
Multiplier Wilds
In both base game and free spins round, as well as standard wilds there are also Multiplier Wilds shown as the microphone. These appear on reels 2 and 3 when triggered by the Lion landing on the top horizontal reel. They carry a 2x Multiplier in addition to substituting for the other pay symbols to complete pay lines.
Up To 25 Free Spins With Progressive Multipliers
The main event in these games is always the free spins round. Here, you get a chance to chase down some really big prizes. To trigger it you’ll need to land 3 or more guitar Scatters anywhere on the reels. You get 8, 10, 15 or 25 Free Spins for landing 3, 4, 5 or 6 Scatters respectively.
The exciting part of this is the progressive multiplier that starts at 1x and increases by 1x with each consecutive cascading win. It does NOT reset between spins either, so it can potentially grow very high. And, by landing 3, 4, 5 or 6 more scatters on a single spin you get 4, 6, 8 or 12 more spins.
Final Verdict
For me, Megaways slots these days live or die on two things – the production style and the willingness of the developer to throw in extra features to make the game stand out from the crowd. Taking production first, I was not blown away by the design of Rock the Reels. The animal rock stars are fun, but the stage setting and soundtrack felt a little cheap and just can’t compete with the epic levels of Play n Go or NetEnt’s classic rock n roll games. In terms of gameplay, the modifiers aren’t hugely exciting – symbol upgrades are nothing new – but did at least add a further element of intrigue to proceedings.
But if neither production or gameplay blew our minds, these is another reason to play Reels of Rock - that 50,000x max win and classic free spins-progressive multiplier combo that you find in the bonus round suggests this slot can produce thrills as good as any other Megaways game.
