Serengeti Gold Review

Serengeti Gold is the third in the ‘Gold’ series from Just for the Win. It is a classic savannah-themed game with 25 active paylines, 5 reels and 3 rows. It’s high variance model and 96.1% RTP are somewhat let down by a disappointing 2,500x top payout. However, an epic backdrop, free spins round with 5x multipliers and HyperHold Re-spins feature still make this one worth a spin

About This Slot

Serengeti Gold follows on from Emerald Gold and Western Gold as the third in the triumvirate of Just for the Win slots that have trodden a very familiar path of themes (Wild West and Irish), each with basic gameplay and the enticing prospect of a very decent top payout – Emerald Gold tops out at 25,000x.  Serengeti Gold lets us down in that department – max win here is 2,500x on the Mega Jackpot payout – but there are still some good reasons to test your luck thanks to a pretty cool Hyper Hold round and the chance of hitting some big wins in a free spins round that makes ample use of multipliers across all reels.

Those who like a good Safari slot will also enjoy loading up Serengeti Gold – its more than a match for its countless competitors, from Raging Rhino to Wild Cats – with a truly stunning, epic backdrop of the Tazanian savannah lands, and of course some very familiar animals taking their place on the reels.

The game is live now at new slot sites in the UK.

RTP, Variance and Top Payout

Like its sister games in the Gold series, Serengeti Gold stakes start at 10p per spin and you’ll need to match 3 icons in adjacent positions on a payline to score a win.

The RTP here is a standard 96.1% – you’ll find most slots come in at around this figure. The important part to know is that this is a high variance game with a volatile pay distribution. That means wins come in short bursts rather than regular drops. So, prepare for this and set your stake level accordingly. The other ‘Gold’ slots work off a similar maths model and we can say from experience that they are tight to play and can frustrate the hell out of you.

The disappointing part of Serengeti Gold is the max payout which comes in way under what we expected. At 2,500x this game will struggle to compete with other high variance titles currently boasting top wins of well over 100,000x per spin.

Symbols and Graphics

One thing we do love about this slot, and others from Just For The Win, is its sweeping artwork that shows the African savannah in all its glory behind the reels. The ornate wooden reel set is flanked to the left by a jackpot table indicating 3 levels of payout – Mini, Major and Mega – which can be unlocked by landing the required symbols for each.

The main paytable consists of 8 specific icons – the low value card suits of Jack, Queen, King and Ace – and the four high paying animals – buffalo, leopards, rhinos, and elephants. The top paying symbol will score you a win of 20x for five on a payline.

There is also a regal-looking lion that suitably represents the Wild and subs for all other icons to create wins; a golden disc that is required to activate the HyperHold Respins feature; and a bonus scatter needed to unleash the free spins round.

Gameplay and Features

Serengeti Gold is not a feature-packed game but rather focuses all its power on two bonus rounds, both of which most regular slots players will be familiar with – free spins with multipliers and Just For The Win’s own HyperHold. The latter has the potential to be the most lucrative we are about to find out.

Free Spins and Multipliers

The free spins round is triggered in the standard way by landing 3 or more scatters on reels 1, 3 or 5. Those who like a bit of added tension in their gameplay will appreciate the addition of a bonus wheel at this point, required to decide how many spins you will get. It can be anywhere from 10 to 25 and comes with a 2x or 5x multiplier applied to all wins in the round.

This is standard stuff, but we enjoy that fact that it is spiced-up by the chance to re-trigger by landing 3 or more scatters again during the round. If this happens, there is no wheel spin. Instead, you receive the same number of spins and same multiplier value as you got at the start of the round.

HyperHold Respins Feature

The other feature, and the highlight of this game, is the HyperHold Respins. Here you’ll need to land 6 gold discs. This gets you 3 HyperHold spins. Now, the bonus icons that triggered the bonus are held and only more bonus icons and blank spaces can drop onto the reels. If a bonus icon lands, it locks in and the re-spins counter sets back to 3.

All bonus symbols on the reels in the HyperHold Re-Spins represent either a value of 1x 20x or a jackpot. The MINI and MAJOR icons give you a jackpot prize of 30x or 100x respectively, whilst the MEGA jackpot is only triggered when the entire reel set is filled with with bonus icons.

Our Verdict

Serengeti Gold comes out as the least memorable of the three in the Gold series of games. There is nothing here that we haven’t seen before, from the age-old theme to the classic execution of free spins and multipliers.

It would be better if Just For The Win have pumped up the jackpots, added a progressive, or done something to create a more engaging free spins round – a progressive multiplier could have worked well. But instead we have a game with quite leaden and unimaginative gameplay and a top payout that just doesn’t compete with other slots on the market right now. Having said that, for new comers to the slots scene, or those just looking for a new Safari game, this slot may still have some appeal. For our own tastes thought, it doesn’t quite make the grade.

If you want some alternative high variance game action we recommend you try No Limit City’s Buffalo Hunter or Quickspin’s Golden Glyhp 2.
