What Our Reviewer Says …
Hacksaw turn one simple slot feature into something dark and deadly!
What We Like
- Very innovative gameplay and features
- Dark theme and production like Hand of Anubis
- One off 'Sacred Scripture' wins of 500x can be triggered
- Orb of Sun upgrades TWO symbols per spin
- Extra free spins round with pre-loaded progressive meter
What We Didn't Like
- Low values in pay table
- Low RTP at some slot sites
Theme and Design
Wings of Horus follows very much in the footsteps of Hand of Anubis in its design style. A towering stone reel set if flanked by two frightening-looking Egyptian deities. Whilst Anubis is a red-eyed dog, Horus seems to be more of a skeletal apparition in tattered cloak and bearing a toothy cobra for added fear factor. The colors are classic Hacksaw. So, monochromatic in the main but with flashes of neon pink and golds for the premium symbols. And finally, a suitably minimalist soundtrack that will no doubt get stuck in your head if you stick around too long. In short, if you enjoy the production on Itero and Anubis, you’ll love this.

RTP and Variance
Wings of Horus has four RTP rates for casino operators to choose from. They are 96.33%, 94.27%, 92.25% and 88.19%. Some slot sites in the UK will definitely run this game at the lower rates so it’s worth checking the game rules page to find out which setting your casino has chosen. You can do this by hitting the hamburger button at the bottom left of the screen and scrolling through until you see Return to Player printed.
Our advice would be to play at MrQ from Lindar Media which always runs Hacksaw Gaming slots at the maximum RTP settings.
This is one of Hacksaw Gaming’s high volatility games and this is a studio known for cranking the variance up high on its best slots so be ready for that. It might be a frustrating play for much of the time but it has some powerful features to help drive big win moments too, as we shall find out.
Maximum Win
The max win in Wings of Horus is 15,000x. That is as high as any Hacksaw slot has gone to date (October 2024). It’s not amongst the highest potential payouts from an online slot. Far from it. But it’s still a decent prize to have in mind when you can win £1,500 from a 10p stake.
Symbols and Paytable
Wings of Horus is a win ways game played on 5 reels with 6 rows each. That means you need to land identical symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, starting at the left most reel, to trigger a win. That gives you 7,776 win ways per spin (6x6x6x6x6).

There are 10 symbols in the paytable. Their values are not spectacular.
They are 5 letters spelling the word H-O-R-U-S. These are valued at 0.1x for 3 H’s up to 0.5x for 5 S’s. The premiums are the Egyptian heiroglyhps and pharaohs, valued at from 0.3x for 3 up to 2x for 5 of the top paying premium.
There is also a wild, represented by the letter W, that substitutes for any pay symbol to complete a win way, and pays out 3x for 5 on a win way.
Features and Gameplay
Wings of Horus has two symbol upgrade features in the base game and two rather ingenious free spins rounds. Here is how they work:
Orb of the Moon Upgrades A Symbol
If the blue Orb of the Moon symbol lands on the grid then it selects ALL instances of one symbol to be replaced with a higher value symbol or a wild. It replaces itself with that symbol too.
Then the final payout for that spin is made.
Orb of the Sun Upgrades TWO Symbols
If the red Orb of the Sun symbol lands on the grid then it selects ALL instances of two symbols to be replaced with a higher value symbol or a wild. It replaces itself with that symbol too.
Then the final payout for that spin is made.

Sacred Scripture 500x Win
Here’s a neat little feature from Hacksaw. The low value symbols spell the word H-O-R-U-S. If you can get all 5 letters to land in the correct order, spelling Horus, then you’ll win a one-off 500x prize.
Two Free Spins Rounds
There are two very inventive bonus rounds in Wings of Horus. You’ll need to land the FS scatter symbol to trigger them.
Revenge of the Pharaoh Round
You need 3 FS scatters to land to trigger this and it starts with 10 spins.
You’ll see two new progression bars appearing at the side of the grid. The golden one on the right progresses each time there is a winning spin. And when the golden bar reaches the top, the purple one to the left of the grid increases one level. Then the golden bar re-sets to zero.

Things get interesting when there is just one spin left. Before it happens the purple bar is activated and a number of Orbs – red or blue – equivalent to the number of levels filled are added to the grid.
Up to 5 Orbs can be added in this way.
This gives you a good chance of a mighty win on your final spin.
As with all Hacksaw slots, the free spins round can be extended by landing 2 or 3 FS symbols on a spin to add 2 or 4 spins to your total.
Rise of the Falcon Round
You need 4 FS scatters to trigger this round and it also starts with 10 spins.
The configuration is the same as the Revenge of Pharaoh round, except that the purple progression bar already starts at level 2, giving you a guaranteed TWO Orbs minimum on the final spin.
And once again, the round can be extended by 2 or 4 more spins by landing 2 or 3 FS symbols on one spin.
Final Verdict
Wings of Horus might not achieve quite the same iconic status as Hand of Anubis over time because the features aren’t as weighty or powerful. However, it’s still a typically clever and inventive slot from Hacksaw Gaming. It’s really made up of just one feature, albeit with an alternative trigger in the free spins round. But it’s a good one that can still trigger some hefty wins, particularly when more than one orb is in play at any time. If that sounds like your cup of tea then strap in and prepare for another trip to the darker side of Ancient Egypt.
Testing Notes
I played 250 spins on Wings of Horus on Hacksaw Gaming’s test servers prior to release to test the game. This is what happened.
- Stake Size: 1
- Start balance: 5,000
- End balance: 4,875.30
- Win Rate: 27.6% (69 winning spins in 250)
- Biggest Win: 20.2x
- Free Spins Round: 1
For a volatile slot Wings of Horus had a surprisingly high win rate at 27.6% in this test session. That’s more than 1 in 4 spins producing a win of some kind. It’s worth remembering though that the value of pay symbols is very small - the maximum is 2x for 5 on a line - so most payouts were small in size.
In terms of gameplay, like many Hacksaw slots it's actually very simple. You’re just looking out for the Orbs to drop and hoping for a good upgrade to a high value symbol. I saw the blue Orbs 8 times, and maybe 1 or 2 red ones. The blue ones got me a 14.4x win at one point, but that was the best payout over the 250 spins.

As for the free spins round, it dropped once in 250 spins. I had the Revenge of the Pharaoh version (3 FS symbols) which resulted in a 20.2x win. It works like this - the more wins you have over your 10 free spins the more Orbs land on the last spin. Unfortunately, I only won enough for one red orb to drop, so the final payout was relatively small.
Takeaways? There are very obvious comparisons with Hand of Anubis in theme and visual / audio style but the games are in fact quite different. Hats off to Hacksaw for a unique feature though I wonder if it will be enough to carry the game in the long term and make it anything like a classic.
