Theme and Design
A Magical Nighttime Setting
This is an exciting game for fans of animal themed slots. The artwork is slick depicting a snowy forest scene at night, with a golden / orange light gleaming through the trees. It has an ethereal quality that taps into the almost super-natural. Wildlife in the paytable is nicely illustrated and there’s a nice soundtrack with Native American flourishes in it to enjoy too.
RTP and Variance
The RTP of Wolf Howl is 96.15%. Nothing to complain about there. That is bang average for a Just for the Win slot and provides good value for your gameplay. Other slots from Just For The Win in this range include games like Diamond Sands (96.08%), Western Gold 2 Double Barrel (96.15%) and Book of King Arthur (96.1%).
The variance in Wolf Howl is high. The base game can be slow and frustrating but once you hit the bonus round there is the potential to score some super-sized wins. Along the way this game can burn you so play with a sensible stake.
Maximum Win
Wolf Howl has a nice max win potential of 25,000x which is one of Just For The Win’s highest possible payouts. It also reflects that highly volatile game engine.
Symbols and Paytable
The game plays on a simple 5 reel and 3 row set up with 10 fixed paylines. Wins are triggered by landing three or more identical symbols from left to right on a payline, starting at the left most reel.
Low pay symbols are the cards, Jack, Queen, King and Ace, paying from 0.4x for 3 Jacks up to 5x for 5 Aces. Premiums are the nicely-illustrated animals, the moose, eagle, rabbit and bear. These are valued at from 1x for 3 rabbits up to 20x for five moose on a line.
The Wolf is key to success as it is the Wild, subbing for all other symbols to complete paylines and valued at 3x, 10x or 30x for 3, 4 or 5 on a line. The wilds also come with multipliers of 1x, 2x and 3x in the base game and 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x in the free spins round. These multipliers will multiply together before being applied to any payout value when 2 or more are part of a win lines.
Features and Gameplay
Wolf Howl is all about hitting the free spins round and building multipliers to drive up your wins. Here is how it works.
Scatter Adders Help Trigger Free Spins in Base Game
You are looking to land the Moon Scatter during the base game to unlock the free spins round. You need 3 or more. Along the way, Scatter Adders randomly drop up to FOUR extra Scatters onto the reels to help you.
Spins are awarded as follows:
- 3 Scatters: 8 free spins
- 4 Scatters: 15 free spins
- 5 Scatters: 30 free spins
You can re-trigger throughout the bonus round as follows:
- 1 Scatter: 2 free spins
- 2 Scatters: 5 free spins
- 3 Scatters: 8 free spins
- 4 Scatters: 15 free spins
- 5 Scatters: 30 free spins
Wild Call Adds MORE Wild Multipliers
The really exciting part is this. During free spins, whenever a Moon Scatter lands, not only is it bringing you MORE free spins, its also turning ALL adjacent spots into Wild Multipliers. Or … if a wild multiplier is already in that spot, its multiplier is just increased by 1x, up to a max of 5x.
NOTE: Wild Call happens AFTER the wins generated by a spin are calculated. So, they apply to the NEXT spin. What you are doing here is adding more wild multipliers to the reels to increase your odds of landing more wins and bigger payouts, whilst also adding further free spins to your cache!
Final Verdict
Wolf Howl is a game for high risk slots fans who like no fuss, just pure exhilarating win potential. This game was built before No Limit City came in and got all complex with their splitters and xNudges, and it may feel a bit dated for those who like their slots with some meat on the bones. But if you just enjoy spinning on a straight forward game, Wolf Howl has a lot going for it. And best of all, it offers huge potential, in fact it is probably the best wolf-themed slot out there for payout potential.
If you choose to spin, just aim for hitting the free spins round as soon as you can, rack up those scatters and you could find yourself on a seriously big wining run if your lucks in.
Testing Notes
Test spins and results analysis by Mark Wadie on 11.07.24
Results from 250 spins with real money on Wolf Howl at Casumo.
- Stake Size: £0.2
- Start balance: £1,051.30
- End balance: £1,045.02
- Win Rate: 15.6% (39 winning spins in 250)
- Biggest Win: 72x
- Free Spins Round: 0
This is fairly typical for a high volatility slot like this one. The win rate was low – less than 1 in 5 spins produced a win – and the free spins round didn’t trigger once in 250 spins. There were 15 wins involving the wild multipliers (6% of spins). My biggest payout came from one of these, a 72x shown in the screenshot where 3 mulitpliers combined – a 3x, 2x and 2x. Remember, these multiplier together so that was a 10x in total. It shows the power of those wilds even in the base game. The other feature from the base game is the Scatter Adder. That triggered 4 times but failed to drop enough scatters to unlock the free spins.
I found this to be a typical game of its type – very tight, lots of near misses with 2 scatters but no cigar, and a low win rate. Of course, some days its going to kick out those big wins and that’s why you play. But just keep in mind you’ll need a lot of patience.
