RIP City
By Hacksaw Gaming
From January 2023, RIP City is a humorous, medium variance slot from Hacksaw Gaming, featuring Max the Mouse and Ro$$ the cat, a backstreet Tom and Jerry whose rivalry plays out as they taunt each other from either side of the reels. In a hilarious cartoon-style, when the Cat Wild symbols drop in this game, their mouth falls open to extend the wild down through the reel, adding multipliers as it goes. Clever twists like this boost your wins up to a maximum 12,500x top payout.
If you love 70s cartoons and fun, upbeat video slots then this is a game that will be perfectly suited to you!

- Not many features to break up gameplay
Theme and Design
Hacksaw Gaming are blazing a trail right now thanks to their clever game mechanics and quirky and eccentric game designs. They can switch from dark to light from one game to the next. In the case of RIP City they are definitely letting the light in - this is a slot drenched in fun and humour.
The artwork and soundtrack are like a corrupted version of a classic 70s cartoon - Max, cigarette in mouth, and Ro$$, looking like he’s just scrapped with another neighbourhood Tom, dance to an upbeat jazz soundtrack as the action plays out on a 5x5 reel set. Fire escapes and trashcans lying around build up the picture of a grimy city.
Hacksaw fans will also recognise the design style - grey, white and black colors are broken up with splashes of neon pinks, yellows and greens. We've seen it in everything from Itero to Born Wild.
RTP and Variance
RIP City has four possible RTP settings: 96.22%, 94.27%, 92.32% or 88.02%. Which you play at is at the discretion of your casino. We checked the RTP at four UK sites and found the following settings:
- MrQ (independent): 96.22%
- Casumo (independent): 94.27%
- Dream Vegas (White Hat Gaming): 94.27%
- MrPlay (Aspire Global): 88.02%
The best place to play RIP City based on the RTP settings is MrQ where the game runs at its optimum setting of 96.22%.
This is also a medium variance game which means its payout distribution will be similar to other Hacksaw Gaming medium variance games like Frank's Farm or Gronk's Gems.
Maximum Win
RIP City has a maximum payout of 12,500x. This is the highest of any Hacksaw Gaming slot (12.04.23). The only other Hacksaw slots with a 12,500x payout are Hop n Pop and Wanted Dead or a Wild. Most of their slots run at a 10,000x max win or less.
Symbols and Paytable
The game plays on a grid with 5 reels and 5 rows. You need at least 3 identical symbols to land from left to right on one of the 19 paylines to score a win.
Symbol values are very good with even low paying ones offering up to 10x, and Wilds paying out for five on a line. Here are the key facts from the paytable:
Low payers are the cards 10 through to Ace. Their values are 0.2x for 3 10s up to 10x for 5 Aces. The premiums are the banana, skull with candle, dice, smiley face with crosses on the eyes, and cue ball with heart. These value at 1x for 3 bananas to 20x for 5 cue balls.
There is a luminous green Wild which subs for all others AND pays out at 25x for five on a line. There is also a Cat Wild which subs for all others AND expands downwards if in doing so it can trigger a win AND pays out 25x for five on a line.
Features and Gameplay
There is nothing complex about the gameplay here. It's all about those multiplier wilds and the free spins rounds. Here is how they work.
Cat Multiplier Wilds
The Cat Wild is a big part of this game and it’s where I scored my biggest wins. When it expands downwards through another Wild, it becomes a Multiplier Wild. Multipliers are valued at 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 200x.
Free Spins Rounds
There are TWO free spins rounds. One for the cat and one for the mouse.
Ro$$ The Cat Free Spins
3 FS symbols unlocks the cat free spins. Here you get 10 spins with enhanced odds of hitting the Wilds. You can re-trigger this round by landing 3 FS symbols. If you hit 4 FS symbols, then the Maxx the Mouse bonus round plays once your spins are done.
Maxx The Mouse Free Spins
When you land 4 FS symbols, Maxx’s bonus feature triggers. Again, you get 10 spins. This time, if a Cat Wild lands, it activates it's reel so that another Cat Wild is GUARANTEED to land on every remaining spin. If you land another 3 FS symbols, you’ll be credited 4 more spins too.

Time Spinners
This 16 payline slot from 2022 is based on the theme of destiny, time and eternity. It is a darker, spookier slot than RIP City and has a higher variance 4/5. There are wild multipliers of up to 12x but these can increase to 50x in the bonus round AND combine to create mega multipliers. Top payout is 10,000x. Read more here.
Pug Life
If you like the animals in RIP City then you will love the cute dogs in Pug Life. The variance in this slot is higher but it has a lower payout potential at 7,500x compared to the 12,500x in RIP City. But there are 200x multipliers to boost your wins and the chance to land sticky multipliers in the free spins round. Read more here.
Where Can I Play RIP City – More Recommended Slot Sites
Casumo – I tested RIP City at Casumo Casino and it’s one of my favourite slot sites. It has a huge game catalogue and a top-class website. Bonuses are regular and come with fair wagering requirements. And if you like slots races to add jeopardy to your spins this is the place to play. There are races hourly with £1,000s prizes. Sign up offer is currently 100% up to £100 and 25 spins.
Temple Nile – This is one of my favourites from the White Hat Gaming group of sites. All WHG casinos have well over 2,000 games. Temple Nile has an Egyptian flavour which sits well with games like Book of Dead and other explorer games. The sign up offer is currently 100% up to £500 so this site suits anyone planning on making a sizable first deposit.
Final Verdict
RIP City is another fun and distinctive game from Hacksaw. I really enjoyed the mix of cheeky characters, retro-cartoon styling and pacey gameplay. However, over a prolonged session things got monotonous very quickly as this game really is just about landing the Cat Wilds. Free Spins round triggers were a rarity so there was little to break up the rhythm.
Hacksaw fans who like their upbeat and fun style will enjoy this game. As will those who eventually unpick its free spins lock. But for the rest of us, it may feel like the kind of game we dip into for a short while before moving on from.
Testing Notes
I tested RIP City at Casumo with real money stakes of 10p over a 50-minute session. You can see a summary of my wins and losses below and a highlights video from my play.
- Test Period: 50 minutes
- Bet Size: 10p
- Start Balance: £117.70
- End Balance: £87.29
- Win / Loss: -£29.91
- Biggest Single Win: £9.78 (97.8x)
- Biggest Losing Streak: 30 spins with no wins
- Free Spins Round Feature Triggers: One
- Free Spins Round Wins: 12p (1.2x)
I love the look and feel of this game. I liked the cheeky, downmarket Max and Ro$$ characters. They bring the game to life whilst for me, the jazzy soundtrack was just the right side of catchy.
In terms of gameplay however, there was not enough action here. It often felt like I was stuck in an endless loop of low wins. RIP City is a medium variance slot based on official audits, but in my session, the payouts felt more like those in a high variance game. The spins weren’t going my way and there were several long periods with no wins – 20 or 30 spins at a time.
In the base round it’s the Wild Cats that you are looking for. If you can get two or three of these on the top row, extending their tongue downwards, you have a lot of wilds in play and the chance to land some bigger this is what happened to me several times and I landed a 97x win as a result. Not a blockbuster, but not bad. As for Free Spins, the round triggered once to deliver 10 spins and a total win of just 1.2x!
Overall, I enjoyed the gameplay and theme in RIP City, but my luck just wasn’t in. A few more feature triggers might have changed my mind but it’s not one I’ll be coming back to soon.
