About This Slot

Those who enjoy the melodramatic side of rock n roll, mixing horror shlock and dirty, low down 4×4 tunes will love a bit of Alice Cooper who has made a career out of delivering crazy stage shows with pyrotechnics, fake blood, guillotines and electric chairs. He is well into his 70s now and perhaps not quite as shocking as he used to be, but he still commands a huge following and is the winner of numerous industry awards. And now he is the proud frontman of another in Play n Go’s series of rock slots that have includes games like House of Doom and ZZ Top Roadside Riches that you can find at all the latest slot sites in the UK.

For their Alice Cooper adventure Play n Go have taken loose inspiration from another of their Rich Wilde games, Tome of Madness, though fans of that one should bear in mind that the likeness here does not go much beyond the title and in this instance the styling is much darker and more gothic as you might expect with A.C. as the protagonist!

After you’ve loaded up this 5-reel, 5-row slot you’ll see that it has an eerie atmosphere through which players explore a castle hall in the base game with a chained-up Cooper to the right of the reel set. Like all grid slots, the format here is a Cluster Pays mechanic which means that you are paid when you achieve a cluster of 4 or more identical symbols, rather than when you score them across paylines, and this is combined with cascading reels which allow multiple potential wins from a single spin.

RTP, Variance and Top Payout

Like most Play n Go games, Alice Cooper and the. Tome of Madness comes in with an RTP of 96.2% which is decent enough. The volatility is shown as 7/10 which puts it at a medium to high level. That means it is not as intimidating as some of Play n Go’s more raucous grid slots like Reactoonz, but it will be an exciting play with plenty of ups and downs in payouts. Meanwhile, as the minimum bet is a reasonable 10p, even cautious players will be able to enjoy a few spins.

The maximum payout of 3,000x stake is a step up from the original Tome of Madness slot featuring Rich Wilde, which only managed 2,000x stake. Hitting the Reality Spins feature, Mega Wilds and Multipliers will help you chase the top payout.

Symbols and Graphics

The artwork here draws on the dark side of Cooper’s image, with gothic stylings and icons including serpents, spiders, hearts, skulls, crosses, golden keys and a big book – the eponymous tome. The best symbol is Alice himself who appears as a stacked Wild symbol.

You need a cluster of at least 4 symbols to receive a payout with the highest payouts coming from clusters of 15 symbols. The higher paying symbols are the heart, serpent, cross and insect, which can pay from 40x to 200x stake for a cluster of 15 symbols. When you hit a cluster of winning symbols, these will disappear to be replaced by a new set of symbols in the next cascade.

Look out as well for the golden key which acts as a trigger for the Alice Cooper Mega Wild, which can substitute for all the other symbols in the game to provide you with more wins.

Gameplay and Features

This one is pretty feature-heavy, including some modifiers that will help you out on any non-winning spin which keeps things fun even when you don’t get lucky. Here is how it all works.

Cluster Pays and Cascading Reels

Instead of regular paylines, this slot requires you to hit a cluster of at least 4 symbols to receive a payout. When winning clusters appear, this triggers a new Cascade, where symbols replace winning symbols – and new potential clusters can be formed.

Reality Effects

On non-winning spins, you will trigger a random Reality Effect. This launches a new screen background and awards a special feature. You could trigger:

The Dungeon – all low paying symbols are transformed into high-paying symbols

Chamber of Horrors – destroys symbols to replace them with Wilds

Insane Asylum – transforms all high-paying symbols into the same symbol

Temptation Room – transforms symbols into the same symbol and adds a Wild

Golden Keys

Collect 3 golden keys on a single spin to unlock the Alice Cooper Mega Wild. This stacked symbol displays the full form of Alice Cooper in all his leather-clad glory. This symbol can appear on reels 2, 3 or 4 and will walk to the left or right on each cascade until it leaves the screen.

Hat of Madness

Whenever you hit a winning cluster, the Hat of Madness charges up. You’ll also receive special features depending on the number of symbols. 10 symbols will award 1-2 Wilds, 25 symbols awards 3-6 Wilds, 50 symbols awards 3 Reality Spins, 75 symbols awards 3 Reality Spins with a 2x Multiplier and 85 symbols awards 3 Reality Spins with a 5x Multiplier.

Our Verdict

Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness is an atmospheric slot which will please fans of the goth rocker. The Cluster Pays and Cascading Reels make the gameplay interesting, while the symbols are suitably eerie and the heavy soundtrack brings it all together. We love the Reality Effects on non-winnings spins, which add excitement and features when no payout is forthcoming and bring new interest with new background themes. This slot ramps up the top payout to 3,000x stake, an improvement on the 2,000x stake jackpot from Tome of Madness with Rich Wilde, however, it still feels a bit of a let-down considering the wild rocker theme. If you love Alice Cooper, this is a fun spinner, but for big potential rewards you’ll need to look elsewhere.
