How We Review Slot Games

Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness is a rock n roll slot from Play n Go with 5 reels, 5 rows and a Cluster Pays mechanic. There are Cascading Wins as well as Reality Affects in the base game that transform low paying symbols into high pay ones and add wilds to the reels. But the main objective is unlock the Alice Cooper fully wild reel by landing 3 key symbols at once. This wild reel walks to the right or left as more Cascades trigger. You can also unlock extra wilds and Reality Spins with more modifiers by charging Alice’s hat! Win up to 3,000x and play at 10p per spin on this mid-high variance game.

Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness

IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.

Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers

I played 200 spins on Tome of Madness for free at Casumo Casino to test the game and this is what happened.

  • Stake Size: £1
  • Start balance: £25,000
  • End balance: £25,044.50
  • Biggest Win: 148.4x
  • Alice Cooper Mega Wild: 2 times
  • Session Time: 24 minutes 40 seconds

This was a tricky 200 spins. For the most part, not much happened. In fact, for 190 spins Alice Cooper remained in lock down and the Hat rarely charged beyond the first feature. The random non-winning spin Reality Affect occurred 10 times over those 190 spins, but the wins were never more than 2x!

A big win from the walking wilds feature in Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness
A 148.4x win from the walking wild feature in testing

Things all changed in the last 10 spins which is typical of a high variance game. Now, the Mega Wild was released TWICE, with wins of 35.5x and 148.4x. The game looks much better when Alice Cooper appears on stage and the walking wild is in action. In the second Mega Wild feature I also got more than 50 changes on the Hat which unlocked 3 Reality Spins. This is where the big wins are because there were lots more wilds driving lots more wins, more clusters forming and more charges on the hat.

In short, beware. This game can go one way or the other. But when it’s in the mood it can clearly kick out some thrilling win sequences.

What We Liked

  • Lots of modifiers on non-winning spins
  • Nice artwork and animations when the walking wild is set free
  • Features combine to thrilling affect when the Hat is charged!
  • Cascading Wins trigger multiple wins from one spin
  • Low minimum stake at 10p per spin

What We Didn't like

  • Relatively low top payout at 3,000x

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"An interesting but volatile slot with the features to go epic on some occasions but let down a little by the low maximum win!"

Overall Score: 7.8

Theme & Design

Our Score 9

A Gloomy Slot That Comes To Life When You Unlock The Fully Wild Reels

Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness is a game that reveals itself in stages. It starts in a church-like setting with a dark atmosphere and little in the way of a soundtrack. It’s not a game that feels particularly exciting on the first few spins. However, your objective, as we will find out, is to unchain the Alice Cooper on the right of the grid by landing keys. When this happens the backdrop changes and the grid is now forefront of a live gig setting with music playing and the star walking up and down the reels twirling a baton. It’s fun, and brings the game to life, but the original game screen can feel a bit gloomy at times, especially if you get stuck there for many spins waiting to unlock those chains!

RTP and Variance

Our Score 7

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness has five available RTP settings – 96.2%, 94.2%, 91.2%, 87.2% or 84.2%. Which you play at will be as the discretion of your casino. Most run at the higher levels – 96.2% or 94.2% but some choose lower settings. Therefore you should check the RTP on the game info screen once you have loaded up the slot to be sure you are getting value for money.

This is also a mid-high variance game so it can be quite a tight play. However, it is packed with quite a few features so despite its volatility in testing it showed that it still kicks out wins on a fairly regular basis. So, perhaps not as volatile as other slots in Play n Go’s catalogue.

Maximum Win

Our Score 6

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The top payout here is just 3,000x. That is not huge by today’s standards and if you someone who likes chasing down those big, big wins then this might not be the game for you. You can find much higher potential in our list of slots with the highest maximum win.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

This is a Cluster Pays game, playing out on a 5×5 grid. That means you need to land 4 or more matching symbols that touch horizontally, vertically or both, to score a win. The exciting part about these games of course is that you can build huge clusters with very high values and that is shown in the paytable.

Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness Paytable
Paytable with 200x wins for 15 premiums in a cluster

There are 8 symbols in all. Low payers are the green, purple, blue and red gems. These are valued at from 0.1x for 3 greens up to 10x for 15 or more reds. The premiums are the spider, cross, snake and heart, valued at from 0.5x for 4 spiders up to 200x for 15 or more hearts.

There is also a wild that can help you form clusters by substituting for any pay symbol. This is represented by the tome wrapped in chains. It has no pay value of its own.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

One of the best parts about Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness is that it is rich in features, so there is usually something happening, even on non-winning spins.

Cascading Wins

Like many grid slots, Tome of Madness uses a Cascading Wins mechanic. So, after any winning cluster is formed, winning symbols are removed and new ones drop in to replace them. This may trigger more wins, in which case the process repeats, until no more wins are formed.

Reality Effects On Non-Winning Spins

If you don’t win on a spin you can still benefit from the random Reality Effect. This is to give you another chance of winning. So, one of FOUR features MAY trigger at this point:

  • The Dungeon – all low paying symbols are transformed into high-paying symbols
  • Chamber of Horrors – destroys random symbols and replaces them with Wilds
  • Insane Asylum – transforms all high-paying symbols into the same symbol
  • Temptation Room – transforms symbols into the same symbol AND adds a Wild

Golden Keys and the Mega Wild

Look out for key symbols which land at any time. They transform into wilds, and if THREE land on one spin then the Alice Cooper Mega Wild is unlocked. This is where the game really came to life in testing. The reel set now appears on a full live stage with the audience in the foreground. Alice Cooper now appears as a fully stacked wild symbol on reels 2, 3 or 4 and walks to the left or right on each cascade until he leaves the screen.

Hat of Madness And Extra Modifiers

The key to bigger wins in this game is the Hat of Madness! This appears to the left of the reel set. Each time you land a winning cluster then the symbols from that cluster are added to the Hat to charge it up. When the Hat reaches certain charge levels, extra modifiers are unlocked as follows:

  • 10 Symbol Charge – 1 to 2 wilds added to the grid
  • 25 symbols – 3-6 Wilds added to the grid
  • 50 symbols – 3 Reality Spins awarded
  • 75 symbols – 3 Reality Spins awarded with a 2x Multiplier
  • 85 symbols – 3 Reality Spins awarded with a 5x Multiplier

What Are Reality Spins?

This feature is a free spins round where you get to choose any of the Reality Effects play out at the end of each spin. AND … if the Alice Cooper Mega Wild is in play during these spins, it can kick out up to SIX extra wilds each time it moves!!

The Final Verdict

This is a mixed bag of a slot. Until you unlock the best features, it can feel quite slow, not helped by the gloomy, gothic atmospherics. But once it does get going then it feels like it has the potential to kick out some really exciting wins. The features are nicely primed to feed off on another and if the momentum is in your favour, it can be great fun. The only caveat is that strangely underwhelming max win of 3,000x. But if you can live with that then this is another top rock n roll slot to add to Play n Go’s growing list.

Useful Tips When Playing Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Landing 3 Keys Is The Route To Big Wins

The best stuff happens when you land 3 keys to unlock the Alice Cooper Mega Wild. This only happened twice in 200 spins during testing but with a walking wild reel you can unlock further wins and charge the hat enough to bring up Reality Spins too!

2. Play At A Low Stake

As this game showed itself to be very volatile in testing it can make sense to play at a low stake to stretch your balance further whilst looking to chase down those big moments where the features unlock. The minimum stake is just 10p which is a good starting point.

3. Look Out For Reality Effects To Turn Non-Winning Spins Into Wins!

The Reality Effects are a useful way to turn your non-winning spins into winning ones when extra wilds are added or low value symbols are upgraded. I picked up some good small wins in this way in testing.

4. Only Play At Licensed UK Slot Sites

We recommend that you only play at sites licensed by the UK Gambling Commission which operate under strict UK law to ensure that they are fair, safe and secure. All the slot sites on this page are licensed.
