How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

From September 2022, this fantasy slot from Quickspin takes us on a forest adventure with a monster-chasing mercenary called Beastwood who has gone off grid to hunt down beasts! An expanding reels mechanic with progressive multipliers called Endless Reels is central to the gameplay. Your objective is to build paylines and grow your multipliers to achieve the highest wins. It’s not easy due to a tough variance, but there is the chance to win up to 29,541x if you accept the challenge.

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"A multiplier-packed fantasy slot which tests and teases whilst offering huge potential for the lucky few."

Overall Score: 8.0

Theme & Design

Our Score 8

Beastwood is a typical Quickspin slot displaying the studio’s own distinctive illustrative design style. Fairytale and fantasy themes regularly form the basis for their games and fans will feel at home here.

The backdrop appears to be Beastwood’s cosy home with a warm fire in the burner, trophies hanging from the wooden beams and starry night sky outside. Beastwood himself and the monsters he hunts are all drawn in a slightly humorous cartoon style. But if you were expecting a hardcore beast-hunting soundtrack then think again. Instead we get a very peaceful and relaxing harp tune to keep you company while you chase down those epic multipliers.

In short we have the high production values we are used to from Quickspin and this looks like the kind of game that will be worth spending some time on.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 7

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Beastwood has three possible RTP settings: 96.11%, 94.19% or 87%. Which you play at is at the discretion of your casino. Most UK sites will run at either the 96.11% of the 94.19% setting which is just below average for a UK slot. For example, BacanaPlay where we played runs Beastwood at 94.19%.

If you are looking for better returns from Quickspin games then you could try Joker Strike at 98.11% for example.

This is definitely a high variance game so it will likely be unpredictable. It does have potential for some big win sequences, especially where the Symbol Win Multipliers and the Free Spins features described below combine.

Maximum Win

Our Score 9

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The maximum payout for Beastwood is 29,541x. This is good, even for a high variance game. Check out the table below for more games with comparable variance and payouts.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 7

Central to the Beastwood game experience are the Ways and Endless Reels systems.

Ways means that wins are scored by landing three or more identical symbols on consecutive reels from left to right starting with the left most reel. The position of the symbols is not relevant, just that they are on adjacent reels.

Endless Reels is similar in style to Infinity Reels from ReelPlay. After a winning spin, a new reel is added. If that extends the current win line, then another reel will be added and so on. There is no limit to how many reels can be added in this way.

Endless Reels In Beastwood
Reels expanding and multipliers collected

The grid starts with just 3 reels, each displaying 4 rows of symbols which gives you 64 ways. But as more reels are added, more Ways are available. For example, at 6 reels with 4 rows you now have the classic 4,096 ways. The number of current win ways is displayed at the bottom of the grid.

Open up the paytable and initially payouts look unimpressive. However, you should keep in mind that as the reels unfold, there will be opportunities to land longer lines of symbols and unlock both reel and symbol win multipliers (explained below) to enhance your wins. Having said that, wins from the low end of the paytable are very small, so you need a lot of multiplier action to push them up to a reasonable level.

From the paytable, low-paying symbols are represented by card suit 10 to A that pays between 0.15x and 0.25x, medium-paying symbols by four monsters paying 0.5x to 1x, and Beastwood as the highest paying symbol paying 2.5x.

There is also an X symbol with horns which represents the Wild and subs for all other symbols to complete winlines. These only land after the first new reel has been added.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

Beastwood is quite a simple game to follow once you have played it a few times.

Initially you are just looking to land 3 matching symbols on the 3 reels. Preferably ones high up the paytable, but more often than not it will be a low card value. With each new reel added to the set, you hope for another of those symbols, or a wild, to drop.

This way you will hit a win every 4 or 5 spins. However, due to the low values in the paytable, things don’t really get interesting until you factor in the two multiplier options. As well as the free spins round, these are your tickets to the big payouts and understanding them will help you enjoy the game more.

The first is a Symbol Win Multiplier.

A Symbol Win Multiplier starts at 1x, and each time more than one of a winning symbol from a line lands on the same reel, its multiplier increases by 1x. Symbol Win Multiplier values are stored on the left of the reels.

Effectively this means you should be looking for the symbol that forms your win line to appear as many times as possible on each new reel. The more it appears, the higher your multiplier will be.

You can have more than one Symbol Win Multiplier active at one time. In fact, twice we were running with two Symbol Win Multipliers concurrently. The screen shot here shows the game in full flow with 1,048,576 ways in play and two Symbol Win Multipliers – a King at 32x and a Queen at 64x.

Then, to enhance your multiplier further, if more than one Wild lands on a new reel, the total number of wilds is multiplier by the Symbol Win Multiplier before it is stored.

The second multiplier is the Reel Multiplier.

This one only comes into play if your sequence extends the reel set to a fifth. At this point a

2x reel multiplier is introduced. And every third reel that is added thereafter will also get its own 2x Reel Multiplier.  These are collected and multiplied by each current Symbol Win Multiplier value. You can see the reel multiplier displayed in this screenshot.

Then, when your winning sequence ends the total value of your winlines are added together and multiplied by the multiplier value to give you your total win.

To summarise – to get the best out of these multiplier features you should be looking to land as many symbols from your winning line as possible on each new reel. This will add to your Symbol Win Multiplier. Then keep going to add as many Reel Multiplier as possible, doubling your total Symbol Win Multipliers each time!

But that’s not all.

There is also a bonus round in Beastwood. You need to land FOUR Bonus symbols to unlock it. These can land with the initial spin or cumulatively as more reels are added. Four bonus symbols gets you 10 free spins with another 3 for every extra symbol over the first four.

You can see how many Bonus symbols you have currently collected to the left of the reels.

The key difference here is that once you have unlocked four reels, then every further reel comes with its own 2x multiplier. This effectively means that you will be doubling your Symbol Win Multiplier values with every new reel.

We didn’t manage to unlock the free spins round in our testing.

The Final Verdict

With its oddly peaceful soundtrack Beastwood kind of lulls you into its world but this is no easy-going game. It’s a great looking slot with really clever features but shows itself to be tough as nails. Winning spins come along every 4 or 5 turns but then it’s a tense few moments whilst the game plays out, waiting to see how far the reels will take you and how big those multipliers might get.

The frustrating part, as we’ve said, is just how hard it is to build a decent payout. Starting from such low symbol values, even on a good run achieving multipliers of 50x to 100x you won’t see much return unless you build your lines with the highest symbols from the paytable. Which is very rare.

The feeling you get is with its high variance engine, Beastwood saves a lot back for a few big win days. So play sensibly and enjoy the ride.
