Blue Wizard
By Quickspin
Blue Wizard is a 5-reel magic-themed online slot from Quickspin (Playtech) with 30 paylines and high volatility. Wild Wizards expand if they can help trigger wins and come with multipliers of up to 16x in the free spins round which is set up by landing 3 or more Castle Scatters on one spin. The headline event is the Fire Blaze Re-Spins which triggers when 6 or more Crystal Balls land. You get 3 re-spins with Crystal Balls held in place. Each one has a multiplier of up to 50x. If more land then the counter re-sets. At the end of the round all values are added and paid out.
The maximum win is 4,217x and spins start at 10p.

Theme and Design
A Mesmerising Game With Magic Qualities
Blue Wizard has been around for a while, but it was polished-up and re-released back in November 2021 by Quickspin, now under the ownership of Playtech. This is very much an old-skool slot and Quickspin did not make an significant changes to the design or layout with the latest version. It has a strangely mesmerising quality to it, set as it is in deep woodland, outside the Wizard’s House (the signpost tells us) with mountains rising in the distance and a reel set bathed in moonlight.

The visuals are good, a little dated perhaps, but what I’ll remember most about playing this slot is the relentlessly weird, ambient and ethereal soundtrack that surely has some magical powers of its own. It really doesn’t seem to matter how slow things are going on the reels, that soundtrack just keeps you locked in and hitting that spin button. Try it and see!
RTP and Variance
Blue Wizard runs at a standard RTP of 96.5% which is a good return, around average for an online slot. This game does not have any other settings so you will be playing at this level wherever you choose to play.
This is also a high variance slot so it can be unpredictable and save back much of its payout potential for small numbers of high value wins. That’s the nature of this kind of game.
Maximum Win
The top payout in Blue Wizard is 4,217x. That is not particularly high for a high-risk slot like this. Other Quickspin slots like Beastwood (29,541x) or Cash Truck 2 (35,000x) offer much higher potential. If that’s what you are looking for then I recommend that you check out our article on the highest max win slots.
Symbols and Paytable
Blue Wizard has a simple layout with just 5 reels and 3 rows, along with 30 paylines to score wins across. There is not huge value in the paytable, with premiums maxing out at 6x for 5 on a line, but with lots of multipliers, and pay outs for lines of scatters too, that can be forgiven.

The low payers are the cards, 10 through to Ace. These are valued at from 0.1x for 3 10s up to 1.6x for 5 Aces. Premiums are the ring, the spell book, the cauldron and the owl. These are valued at from 0.2x for 3 rings up to 6x for 5 owls.
You’ve also got Wilds to help complete winlines, which also come with multipliers in the free spins round, and scatters that pay out as well as triggering free spins.
Features and Gameplay
Keep Your Eyes Out For Crystal Balls - They Are Your Best Hope Here!
Compared to many of today’s feature-packed slots, there is not a whole lot going on in Blue Wizard. But that can be a good thing sometimes, keeping confusion to a minimum and allowing you to focus on key events.
Base Game Is All About Expanding Wilds
In the base game the most common trick is the Expanding Wild. This is your friendly Wizard, the Wild, who lands on reels 2 to 5 and will expand IF in doing so, he creates a win. I saw this one many times over in testing, though most times the wins were small.

Free Spins Are Triggered By Landing 3 Castle Scatters
To be honest, during the base game the wins were very small and felt like crumbs being thrown to keep me in the game whilst I waited for the free spins or the Fire Blaze Re-Spin.
Free Spins trigger when 3 or more Castle Scatters land anywhere. The good thing about this game is that you also get a payout when those scatters land. So, on top of 6 spins you also get a 1x, 10x or 50x payout.

Once the round starts, there is a key difference between the configuration of these spins and the base game that makes it more likely to kick out bigger wins: now all Wilds that land on the centre reel will have a multiplier of 2x, 4x, 8x or 16x attached to them.
6 spins can be enough to build up some nice wins as my test session showed, but it doesn’t have to end there. It is also possible to re-trigger the free spins round by landing 3 or more scatters on one spin too.
Crystal Balls and Fire Blaze Re-Spins
So, the base game is OK, the free spins round better. But where Blue Wizard can really deliver is in the Fire Blaze Re-Spins.
You will notice when you start spinning that alongside standard pay symbols, scatters and wilds, are Crystal Balls with numbers or stars on them. In the base game these are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15 and 50, representing multipliers of your bet value. They get jacked up to 5, 10, 15 and 50 in the free spins round.
Or, if a star is displayed on the Crystal Ball then it represents one of the three fixed jackpots – Major, Minor or Mini worth 500x, 100x or 20x respectively.

To set this feature in motion you need to land at least 6 Crystal Balls on one spin. When you do then the Crystal Balls are locked in for 3 re-spins. If on a re-spin another Crystal Ball lands then the counter re-sets to 3 and you go again.
When all the re-spins are done, then the total value of all Crystal Balls is added up and paid out. And, if EVERY position is filled with a Crystal Ball then a special Grand Jackpot 2,000x is paid out.
But that’s not all. Remember those fixed jackpots? Each time a Star appears, it will transform into either the Major, Mini or Minor Jackpot. And that can pay out multiple times during the feature.
Final Verdict
Blue Wizard looks a bit out of place compared to all the sophisticated online slots available today. It’s 5x3 reel set and quaintly old-skool symbols hark back to a bygone era. Yet it still seems to hold its own thanks to the compelling prospect of that Fire Blaze Re-Spins round which, let’s face it, is all most players will be here for. As testing showed, the balance of the game is very much in favour of big wins kicked out by those Crystal Balls rather than anything significant happening in the base game. So if you enjoy lock and win re-spin features like the ones described here then this could be a good slot for you, particularly with the added excitement of those fixed JPs that can trigger repeat wins with each re-spin. Just be ready for a long wait to trigger the best parts. Good luck!
Testing Notes
I played 200 spins on Blue Wizard for real money at BacanaPlay to test the game and this is what happened.
- Stake Size: £0.1
- Start balance: £11.97
- End balance: £3.21
- Biggest Win: 72.2x
- Free Spins: 1
- Session Time: 12 minutes 25 seconds
200 spins absolutely flew by in just over 12 minutes. That is quick and reflects the fact that not much happened for a lot of the time! In the base game I landed many wins with expander wilds but they were all pitifully low in value, always less than my stake, it seemed. Maybe bad luck, or perhaps down to the low values in the paytable. Either way, it didn’t feel like Blue Wizard had much love for me. That was until I unlocked the free spins when things improved to deliver a 72.2x win in just 6 spins. This was all down to expander wilds with multipliers on the third reel.

It was a shame not to get to the Fire Blaze Re-Spins because I sense that this game is heavily weighted towards payouts form that feature (and free spins), which makes sense for a highly volatile slot. The lesson is, be patient if things aren’t going your way. Or, drop out if you can’t stick the frustration!
