The format of Book of King Arthur is no different to many other Book of slots so it’s just a case of spinning til you land those 3 scatters. There were a few small wins on the way but nothing special. I unlocked free spins once with the 10 as the chosen expander. Total win, 37x. Not great, but not bad either. In some Book of slots it can take 300 or more spins before the bonus round unlocks, so from that perspective it’s a fair result.

An Interesting Alternative Theme For A ‘Book of’ Slot

Just For The Win have gone for a floating cylindrical reel design in Book of King Arthur. It has a 3d look and sits in front of a regal-looking chamber with red carpet and stone columns, though to be honest you can’t see much of it. The backdrop hints that we are in the court of King Arthur rather than displaying it in full grandeur whilst the jaunty medieval soundtrack adds some appropriate atmosphere.

It’s a nice looking game but a little too retro for my own tastes. At least by moving to a different historical theme have taken the ‘Book of’ format away from its Egyptian roots.

Another feature of the ‘Book of’ slot is high values in the paytable and you get that too, maxing out at a massive 500x for 5 of the top payer.

The low payers are the cards, 10 through to Ace. These are valued at from 0.5x for 3 10s up to 15x for 5 Aces. The premiums are the shield, cup, sword and King Arthur himself. These are valued at from 0.5x for 2 shields up to 500x for 5 Arthurs.

The book symbol is the Wild and Scatter combined. So, it can substitute for any other symbol to complete a payline, but also triggers free spins when 3 or more land ANYWHERE on the reels. It has great value too at 2x, 40x or 200x for 3, 4 or 5 on a line on its own.

Classic ‘Book of’ Gameplay Throughout This Slot

There is nothing new about the free spins format here either.

Landing 3 or more of the Books will trigger the Free Spins round with 10 Free Spins awarded initially. Before the round begins, a round table spins to reveal which icon will become an Expanding Symbol.

Once into the bonus round, if by expanding that symbol can trigger wins, then it will do just that. Symbols in a payline with the expander do NOT have to be on adjacent reels OR start on reel 1. And if you land 3 or more books at any point, the round will re-trigger.

Boost Feature Gives You Expanding Wilds

As an add on, Just For The Win have created this extra feature. In regular play, the minimum bet is 20p but if you activate the Boost Feature, this increases to 40p. Doubling the bet in this way causes the Wild to expand to cover the whole reel in both base game and free spins round and increases your winning chances on every spin.

The Final Verdict

With its formulaic gameplay that follows the ‘Book of’ style to the letter, Book of King Arthur doesn’t offer much that is new in this popular series. However, if you are a fan of slots with Arthurian legend or medieval themes then it offers a nice alternative backdrop to a type of slot that is traditionally built on Ancient Egyptian or explorer narratives. The game ran smoothly for me and seemed to be slightly less volatile than other recent Book of slots which have proved harder to break down in our testing sessions. That might also be reflected in the 5,000x top win which is much lower than that of Book of Shadows or Duat for example. So, if you find games like those to be too volatile but want to stick with the ‘Book’ then Book of King Arthur represents a good alternative.
